New Delhi: With an aim to promote cyber security, the government has launched a malware analysis centre called the Cyber Swachhta Kendra (CSK).

The centre, launched by ministry of electronics and information technology (MEITY), will work with different Internet service providers (ISPs), academia, banks and anti- virus companies in the industry in providing citizens with digital tools that will protect data by removing the malicious content on their computers, laptops and mobile phones.

“India is going to take a lead in the digitization process of the world. We have joined the distinguished club of countries that already have malware cleaning systems for the use of its citizens. As of now, we have 13 banks & Internet service providers using this facility. With the expanding digital footprint in the country, I see a surge in start-ups in the area of cyber security by the end of the year,” said Ravi Shankar Prasad, minister of electronics and information technology.

All alerts related to any malicious content penetrating into any user’s system will first be disseminated from the Kendra to the different ISPs who will further pass it onto the users through messages or email notifications. Based on these alerts, users can visit the CSK website, to download the various tools to clean their systems for free.

With an estimated budget of Rs90 crore, the centre has been developed by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) of the ministry along with Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Quick Heal Technologies and Amrita University.

“Security is too critical an area for a single stakeholder to take control of , that’s why so many entities are part of this initiative and all of them need to bring their combined capabilities together,” said Aruna Sundarajan, secretary, MEITY.

The various digital solutions created are USB Pratirodh for usage of USB mass storage devices, App Samvid for Microsoft software based operating systems and M-Kavach for mobile devices.

Wait for some kind of professional test before downloading.

Just in case it's a resource hog that's not as good as a professional AV.

The Android version has a rating of 4.4 in Play Store.

I think it is better to have a government controlled security software running in government offices purelt from the point of view of security. Besides, with the digitization drive and Jio revolution, there will be millions of first time users of internet through mobiles and PCs, a government promoted security software would have larger acceptance and government will be able to promote it without any controversy...they can't do the same with a Norton or Kaspersky! Most of the users, even the well-educated users are careless about security issues, most mobile phone users don't have a good antivirus software installed (I use Lookout), even many PC/laptop users don't keep an updated or valid antivirus and security software (that's what I see too often), and many don't even update the Operating Systems and apps.....so a government drive is needed here.

More than the anti-virus, with CSK Govt will be able to analyse the malware first-hand instead of being dependant on external vendor.

Security Essentials is decent, but there's a problem with it. It obstructs other AVs if you want them (like a USB specific AV). Just classic MS.

You're better off getting something professional like Kaspersky/Bitdefender/Avast/Avira/Eset.

Kaspersky also maintain a website with articles about newer viruses, how they identify them, and whether they've released a fix for it. If you like articles like that, check their website out.

Last time I bought Kaspersky, it was something like 700 for 3 licenses, which worked out nicely.

Security Essentials is average...Even Microsoft uses Trendmicro on there cloud platform had been good they would have used it. Anyways on can use AVG for av and Malwarebytes as Anti Spyware. Even better use a guest account to do any activity which can harm your comp.

Kasperski is FSB, probably. :D

Founder Eugene Kasperski studied in a KGB-affiliated school and worked for a while in Rus military.

It has a database of all detected malware along with the diagnosis. Presently we should work of machine learning for security ( a new technique) which allow to detect and diagnosis new malware faster.

MSE is good because I have never seen it hogging CPU cycles like other free av. MSE + system restore = decent defense

Yeah right, like I'm going to install a government created rootkit on my computer. :) Best option is not to use Windows and also don't install software from untrusted sources (it's not always an option but I like to stick to free and open source software).

@Keshav Murali @aditya10r

What are some good AV that are less resource intensive.
Are you sure you want to use ANY AV at all? in this era of open app architectures where the user himself grants permission to apps, how can an antivirus save us? The flashlight app, for example, seeks permission to read, write, modify our SMSes. Not many people know that. There are many apps which sneak in a lot of permissions while we accept it blindly. No anti virus will be able to detect such breaches because we ourselves gave permission to it. It is not a 'virus' per se.

This whole idea of virus versus anti-virus is BS. Just use a linux/unix system and you will be fine. If it is not feasible, then simply buy a portable laptop for financial transactions and keep the desktop for all other non sensitive purposes and format it every 3 months.

Talking of free stuff, 360 security is also good. I've noticed that some trojans weren't caught by MSE, but were easily caught by 360.
