India’s firm policy pushes more Rohingyas to Bangladesh

KOLKATA: India's firm anti-Rohingya policy is triggering reverse migration with several Rohingyas, who worked as domestic help, construction labours and small-time shop-keepers, slowly moving back to Bangladesh.

According to BSF officials, at least 50 such Rohingya immigrants, who had been living in India for years, crossed over to Bangladesh over the past few weeks.

At least three big teams from Sharanpur in Uttar Pradesh, Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh and Ambala in Punjab tried to cross over to Bangladesh through the border points in North 24 Paragana district.

The Border Security Forces apprehended some of these groups and handed them over to the local police for further legal action. According to a rough estimate, at least 40,000 Rohingya Muslims have been living in India for years now.

Central agencies monitoring the movement of Rohingyas have observed that reverse migration has started, albeit in small groups. Incidentally, this comes at a time when Indian Foreign Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj, is having a meeting with Bangladeshi Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, in Dhaka.

"Following the interrogation of some Rohingya immigrants who were apprehended, it appears that the people under whom they were working, had asked them to leave. " a senior BSF official said.

ONLY way to get rid of illegal Bangladeshis as well as Rohingyas is to deny them livelihood - DO NOT EMPLOY THEM. No govt will be able to deport these pests without NGOs and activists raising a stink.

^^ BJP could have moved them out just like Congiis got them in i.e without much halla gulla. "Empty vessel make the most noise"apt for this case .
Sorry but illegal migration happens silently not deportation. Cong just closed their eyes and the bd and rohingyas sneaked in silently. Reverse cannot happen without halla gulla.

Rohingya exodus from India to Bangladesh hits 1,300: Official

New Delhi has faced sharp criticism for turning members of the persecuted minority over to Myanmar in recent weeks, despite the army there being accused of atrocities against the Rohingya.

At least 1,300 Rohingya Muslims have crossed into Bangladesh from India since the start of the year, an official said on Wednesday, as fears of deportation to Myanmar spark an exodus.

New Delhi has faced sharp criticism for turning members of the persecuted minority over to Myanmar in recent weeks, despite the army there being accused of atrocities against the Rohingya.

The United Nations and rights groups accused India of disregarding international law and returning the Rohingya to possible danger in Buddhist-majority Myanmar.

India, which is not a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention, arrested 230 Rohingya in 2018 -- the most in years as Hindu hardliners called for the displaced Muslims to be deported en masse.

The round-ups in India, and fear of deportation to Myanmar, have driven even more of the stateless Muslims into Bangladesh, where a million Rohingya live in giant refugee camps in the country's southeast.

Nayana Bose, a spokeswoman for the Inter Sector Coordination Group (ISCG), which includes UN agencies and other foreign humanitarian organisations, said the pace of new arrivals had escalated since January 3. "Some 1,300 individuals from 300 families have arrived from India to Bangladesh until today," she told AFP.

The new arrivals were being housed in a UN transit centre, she added. UNHCR spokesman Firas Al-Khateeb said the UN refugee agency was "aware of the situation".

Those crossing the border in recent weeks have been detained by police and sent to Cox's Bazar, a southern district home to the world's largest refugee camps.

Some 40,000 Rohingya have been living in India. Police said those who arrived were living in India for years.

Rohingya for decades have faced persecution and pogroms in Myanmar, which refuses to recognise them as citizens and falsely labels them "Bengali" illegal immigrants.

They were concentrated in Rakhine state, the epicentre of a brutal Myanmar army offensive in August 2017 that UN investigators described as genocidal in intent.

At least 720,000 Rohingya fled the bloody crackdown and entered Bangladesh to join some 300,000 already living in the camps. Amnesty International, among other rights groups, has blasted India for forcibly repatriating the Rohingya to Myanmar when persecution in Rakhine is ongoing.

Dozens of Rohingya were also deported from Saudi Arabia to Bangladesh last week. They were arrested for illegally using Bangladeshi passports to travel to the kingdom.

It's time India got rid of illegal Bangladeshi Muslim immigrants by actively helping them emmigrate to middle-east & Europe.

Just give them real passports (or fake Bangladeshi ones) as long as they fuck off & stay there. Emmigration (not openly) backed by a nation should be much more successful than their individual efforts.

Time to NGO up...
