Pakistan's former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani along with his family has moved into the sprawling presidency in the heart of Islamabad for security reasons, according to media reports.
TV news channels reported that Gilani had been provided a three-room suite on the sixth floor of the president's official residence. He had earlier moved into the Islamabad Club after he was disqualified by the Supreme Court. The news channels quoted their sources as saying that Gilani could not stay at the club due to security concerns.
Some reports said Gilani was expected to play a behind-the-scenes role in guiding the administration of new Prime Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf. Ashraf was on Friday elected the Prime Minister during a special session of the National Assembly following Gilani's disqualification.
Gilani was convicted by the apex court in April after he refused to reopen graft cases in Switzerland against President Asif Ali Zardari.
Meanwhile on Sunday, Ashraf took on his party's detractors saying those who thought the democratic set-up could be ended by ousting his predecessor have been proved wrong.
"Some people thought if he (Yousuf Raza Gilani) is sent away, then democracy can be ended. But you have seen the commitment of the people and Parliament of Pakistan and those who are linked to democracy," Ashraf said. "So if Yousuf Raza Gilani is not there, a PPP member from the workers' class called Raja Parvez Ashraf is there," he said while interacting with reporters at the Bhutto family's mausoleum at Garhi Khuda Baksh in southern Sindh province.
