Interesting incidents and stories….. I would like to include my two paisa in it.
This is not something which happened ages ago, but in fact only a couple of months back with me. I was in this city on an official tour and had to stay couple of (11) days till project completion. I was provided with lodging facility in the guest house of the customer which is there in the premises itself.
Let me describe the guest house a bit. It was just three rooms with two bathroom cum toilet in the top floor of a three storey building in the rear end of the premises. With two temporary office in the lower two floors, the building gets empty by 6PM.
Now on the first day of my arrival, there were three other guys in there too. But from next day onwards I was the sole boarder of the whole guest house, in fact the sole boarder in the whole campus after 7PM. Speaking of neighbours, I had a junkyard and a hospital morgue on two sides. There were other inhabitants too on one side, but they were good 100 mtrs away from the campus walls. So from 7PM onwards it’s just “Main aur meri tanhai”.
This incident took place on the forth night of my stay. After the other three guys moved out the second day, I occupied the much larger of the three room with two beds. It was well past midnight and I was having a very good sleep, when I suddenly heard like someone knocking at the window on the legside of my bed. I thought it to be something in my mind and tried to sleep again. But the knocks kept on coming sporadically. Now this window was towards the junkyard side of the campus with a NEEM or PEEPAL tree (can’t say whichone) branch underneath it.
It was a full moon summer night and I could clearly see the outside, but was unable to see anyone knocking at the windows which is just a feet from my bed. Out of frustration I switched on the light and immediately the knocking stopped. But it started once again couple of minutes after I switched the light off. This switching on/off of light did went for few more times and every time the light is switched on, the knocking does stops.
I picked up one of the bedstand which was there to tie up the mosquito net and after switching off the light waited for the knocking to resume. I hold the stand like a cue stick with the nailed end on the window frame. My idea was to push open the window with force the moment knock comes. And it did came. It was like ‘thak thak thak’ ‘thak thak thak’on the glass pane, but not in rhythm. I waited for the couple of first ‘thaks’ and hit the window frame in middle the moment the next hit came.
There was this sharp shrilled shriek the moment window flew open. A chill did ran down my neck with that shriek and the cold air which rushed in the room with that shriek. It took a minute for me to understand the shriek source and to understand the whole thing.
Sorry, for spoiling whole thing. It was infact a night bird which was roosting in the branch just below the window. In the full moon night it was hitting on its own shadow in bottom of the glass pane. The moment I switch on the light, its shadow gets vanished and knocking stops. But it resumes it once darkness prevails in the room and the shadow forms again due to moon light. I was not sure whether I was happy because I solved the mystery or sad because I scarred the shit out of the bird.
