The German air force is facing such a severe funding shortage that many of its aircraft are unable to fly, mechanics are forced to cannibalise parts from existing planes and only eight of the country's 109 Eurofighters are fully operational, according to a report in Spiegelmagazine.German defence sources have rubbished the article, saying it is inaccurate and does not match up to official air force logs.

But the claim that Germany's air force is not as strong as previously thought will cause concern among its Nato allies at a time of growing worldwide instability.Germany has the fourth largest air force in Europe, yet the Spiegelreport suggests it is far weaker in reality than it is on paper. Many aircraft are badly in need of repair, and spare parts are in such short supply that mechanics have resorted to taking them from existing planes, said the magazine.

Rest of the article:German fighter jets unable to fly and mechanics forced to borrow spare parts, claims magazine - Telegraph

It seems ~70.000 euro per hour of flight is too much for German budget. It's insane how massive operational costs of this aircraft are, even F-22 is much cheaper to fly (~44.000 USD).

RAF also pay that much or its just German/Austrian thing? @HMS Astute

Another reason why we should cancel Rafale deal.

Germans don't need to worry as long as American air base is there

Its logically Possible with the sort of mess the European economies are in right now. its wonder that they have sustained EURO concept even with most of the nations going defunct.

House of Commons - Defence Committee: Written evidence from C J A Cope, Political Editor, Warship World Magazine

The problem with Luftwaffe is because of poor management by the defence ministers. We don't have this kind of problem in the RAF, but they are indeed ridiculously expensive and therefore we can't really afford to deploy big quantity of them in NATO exercise or Baltic air policing missions. Also, bare in mind that Germany defence budget is bigger than India's although it has very tiny armed forces. So, IMO India should think carefully before it purchases any expensive aircraft which could become a nightmare to operate and maintain in the long term.

There is not too much differance in their manufacturing and operating cost.

Germany was the country who benefited by this financial crisis compare to any EU nation and perhaps only. But devaluation of Euro is also their problem.

70000 euros includes the amortisation of the infrastrutture cost and the deterioration of the airplane, removing that cost it gets near 20k

lol their is a lot of difference , Eurofighters need new infrastructure and maintenance base , but Rafale needs to just to upgrade existing Mirage bases and also have some common spares

These are additional cost, isn't they. And mirj2000 is not going to reduce Rafale's cost. And mirj infrastructure is indeed helpful, but we have to upgrade it for Rafale, eventually weapon package will be upgraded.

upgrading just costs little more then the normal price , but setting up maintenance base costs allot, Eurofighters spares coming from various different EUROPEAN countries, but Rafale spares coming from single country, this is best in war time ....
