Gen V.K.Singh as Joint Chief of Staff

The government should take the long overdue decision to create a post of Joint Chief of Staff to improve the communication and synergy between the armed forces and MoD. I feel Gen Singh who has shown exceptional integrity , courage to stand up against all the wrongs plaguing the armed forces should be India's first Joint Chief of Staff. The government can undo some damage by extending his service by one year according to his correct date of birth and saving some face in front of the Indian public.

We already do have a JOINT CHIEF mate. I think it is Admiral Nirmal Verma right now after ACM Naik retired last year.

Waht he meens is CDS - Chief of Defense staff....
If the olitical establishment to avaod such emabrassements and want MoD to do some worthwhile tasks, then a CDS would be necessary.

There are chances of his political career & you are giving him CDS position. GOI does not feel need for CDS. Ex-ACM Naik also gave his articulate view on that sometime before.

CDS is not getting implemented because of inter service rivalry. Navy and Air force feel that they will lose direct access to defence ministry and a CDS from army will not understand the importance of role of navy and air force.

post kargil the govt was very keen on CDS but couldnt do so because of objections from Air force and navy.

The govt fears that a CDS will become overly powerful. The appointment is sorely needed, along with major reforms in the higher defence organization. Service HQs have been made "Integrated HQs" of MoD as a token measure, but the decision making is still slow because the integration is in name only. We need to have specialists - both military and civilian - manning the MoD for a properly functioning higher defence organization. You can not have a bureaucrat coming in from the Agricultural Ministry to the MoD and expect him to take sound decisions without due diligence.The time spent on the learning curve in a specialized job is part of the reason for delays in defence projects. Till Rajiv Gandhi's time the Chiefs had direct access to the PM, and the need for writing like the leaked letter by the present Chief did not arise.
