5 Including 9-Year-Old Girl Attacked By Cow Vigilantes In Jammu And Kashmir
Story Highlights
  • 5 members of nomad family herding cattle injured in attack yesterday
  • Brutally beaten up by self-styled cow protectors, hospitalised
  • Police promises strict action, no arrests so far
Srinagar: Five members of a family including a 9-year-old girl have been injured in an attack by 'gau rakshaks' or self-styled cow vigilantes in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. The incident took place on Friday evening when a nomad family was moving with their livestock near the Talwara area. They were intercepted by a large group of gau rakshaks and beaten up with iron rods.

The victims say the attackers took away their entire flock including goats, sheep and cows. The injured, 9-year-old Sammi, who have suffered multiple fractures have been shifted to hospital.

The police said they have filed an FIR and action will be taken against the attackers. "We have registered an FIR. I have asked DIG of Udhampur range to visit the area. Strict action will be taken against these goons," said Jammu and Kashmir police chief SP Vaid said.

Police in Reasi said they have identified five of the attackers but no one has been arrested so far. "We are investigating the case and culprits will be brought to book," said a police officer in Reasi.

The victims say they can't forget the horror. "They beat us ruthlessly. Somehow we managed to flee from there. One of our children, a 10-year-old, is still missing. We don't know whether he is alive or dead. They even beat our elders very badly. They wanted to kill us and throw our bodies into the river," said Naseem Begam, one of the victims.

Besides goat, sheep, the family were moving with 16 cows. "They didn't even spare dogs. They too were taken away," she said.

Jammu and Kashmir has a large number of nomadic herder families, who travel between the Jammu's Himalayan mountains and the meadows of Kashmir every year with their flocks of cattle, horses, goats and sheep.

It's very much a thread on internal security and politics of India when certain fanatics with unknown identity go on taking law and slaughtering anyone using the excuse of their sensitivities with possible support from top leadership in government. It is hardly a religious and cultural thread since the only connection with religion is that some of the Gundagardi is being done on the name of religious sensitivities.

Uttar Pradesh on alert: MP police warn of ‘spectacular attacks by ISI-trained sadhus’

The inputs, provided by Madhya Pradesh police, said 17-18 men, well-versed in Hindu religious practices and shlokas, would try to blend into the local populace before carrying out the strikes.

Uttar Pradesh police tightened security in all districts on Saturday following intelligence inputs that “anti-national elements” dressed like Hindu saints were planning to carry out “spectacular” attacks at prominent religious sites and public places in the state.

The inputs, provided by Madhya Pradesh police, said the 17-18 men had been trained by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence in Hindu religious practices, and might try to blend into the local populace before carrying out strikes.

“A group of 17-18 anti-national elements, trained in Hindu rituals, is planning a spectacular incident at prominent religious sites and other sensitive spots in the guise of sadhus,” the letter issued by additional director general of MP police read.

The alert comes roughly a month after Hindu hardline leader Yogi Adityanath took over as chief minister of the state, and two days after UP’s anti-terrorist squad busted a suspected terror module along with sleuths from five other states.

New UP director general of police, Sulkhan Singh, who took over on Saturday, said he “won’t be able to comment immediately on a specific issue”. “But, I can assure you that we are capable of neutralising any threat,” Singh told HT.

A senior official said police tightened security in crowded places as well as important pilgrimages such as Ayodhya, Mathura and Varanasi. Besides, he said, additional security personnel were deployed at Taj Mahal in Agra, the high court in Allahabad and its Lucknow bench, the assembly and secretariat buildings and other important government offices in Lucknow.

Later in the evening, the state ATS’ IG Aseem Arun told ANI that the “hype is unnecessary” and that the security agencies are always on alert.

The MP police letter referred to a 2016 incident in which eight suspected members of the banned Students Islamic Movement if India (Simi) had also assumed the guise of Hindus to escape attention. The men were killed after escaping from a jail in Madhya Pradesh last year.

The document also cited the example of Gaus Mohammad, a suspected terrorist who was found living under a Hindu name, Karan Khatri, in Lucknow in March. “In February, intelligence agencies in the state were tipped off about four dozen terrorists sneaking into UP through the porous border with Nepal,” read the letter.

Some of these people, intelligence agencies believe, were specially trained by the ISI to fox security forces’ attention by their saffron clothes and knowledge of Hindu scriptures and practices.

“In the past as well, we have information about ISI’s “Operation Krishna India” in which the agency would send its agents in the guise of Hindus saints,” the letter added.

Meanwhile, a Lucknow court allowed eight-day police remand of the two suspected terrorists Ahtesham-ul-Haq and Mohammad Faizan to UP’s anti terrorist squad (ATS) .

New UP Police Chief Sulkhan Warns Criminals, Gau Rakshaks

Lucknow:
On his first day in the top job, the Uttar Pradesh police chief Sulkhan Singh had a stern message for criminals, politicians breaking the law and Gau Rakshaks, or cow vigilante groups. If they cross the red line, they shouldn't expect to be spared, he said, vowing to crush goondagardi (lawlessness) in the state.

Mr Singh, who replaces Javeed Ahmed, said he had strict orders from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to crack down on everyone who indulges in criminal activities. "We have been given orders by the Chief Minister not to spare anyone," he said on Saturday, minutes after he took charge. It won't matter if the violator belongs to a particular party. "They will be dealt with in the same way as everyone else," Mr Singh, who replaces Javeed Ahmed, the first major casualty due to the change in government in Uttar Pradesh.
