Indian Army may soon get new-generation tanks

NEW DELHI: Indian Army will soon get new generation, state-of-the-art tanks called the Future Ready Combat Vehicle (FRCV), numbering over 1700, to replace the ageing Soviet-era T-72 tanks.

The Defence Ministry has issued a global request for information (RFI) on Wednesday for development and manufacturing of FRCV under the Strategic Partnership model in collaboration with an Indian partner. Under the joint development plan, the design will be provided by the Foreign Original Equipment Manufactured to the selected Indian strategic partner.

FRCV, which is planned to be used in border areas close to Pakistan and China, will not only form the basic platform of the main battle tank, but also for a family of variants such as lighter tanks, taking the total number of vehicles to be manufactured under this project to over 2,000.
In addition, such a push indicates India's moving away from indigenous tank projects like Arjun Tanks and reduction in dependence on Russian-origin military vehicles.
Due to different "operational scenarios" and for maintaining combat edge over an adversary, the Army needs to induct latest medium-weight class tanks to replace the vintage T-72 tank fleet. The army is seeking induction of the FRCVs by 2025-27. Accordingly, the RFI was issued to procure 1,770 FRCVs
in a phased manner.
The FRCV is planned to be used for "rapid dominance" in the battlefield with real time awareness, agility, lethal firepower and multi-layered protection. The army wants it to be able to conduct operations during day and night and respond to anti-tank and anti-aircraft threats, including low flying manned and unmanned rotary aircraft. It is likely to be employed in varied terrains, including high altitude areas, deserts and mountainous terrain.

This includes operations at temperatures ranging between -30 degress celsius to +50 degrees celsius. A previous RFI issued in June, 2015, for the designs of a FRCV stated that the vehicle should be able to be used along India's western border.
As the FRCV is being procured under the Strategic Partnership model, the foreign OEM will have to inform the government of the basic design of a proven armoured fighting vehicle, based on which the current design is being proposed. The selected OEM will also have to ensure its Transfer of Technology.
India, which wants to acquire such technologies including design know-how, is in the process of developing an industrial ecosystem for such vehicles. The OEM will also have to take into account 10 years performance based logistics and life cycle support for about 50 years.
This project is different from a similar one called the Future Infantry Combat Vehicle (FICV) programme, which is for supplying over 2000 vehicles to replace the army's existing Infantry Combat Vehicles, the BMP-IIs. Furthermore, experts explained that the new FRCV project indicates moving beyond the indigenous programs, such as the DRDO's Future Main Battle Tank and the Arjun Mark-2 program.

How T-14 is capable of doing all of these? T-14 is so big, as Anup sir showed, neither can be used in mountain nor in urban warfare. T-14 is only MBT from Armata UCP. So if not T-14, Armata too should not be considered as they don't fit in it.
The main concern for urban warfare is not mobility but armor, especially on the top where it has traditionally thin. This is solved ERA and APS.
As for mountain warfare the, Japanese Type 10 which is made for mountain environmental also has 9+m length.
The main concern is power.
Plus claim down DRDO has a new tank in making based on arjun mk2
Future MBT (FMBT) was originally a new tank design that was to be developed from scratch for induction in 2025 and beyond. The FMBT and the programme would have focused on weight reduction in the design and was to be a lighter tank of 50 tons,.[100][101] However, the idea was dropped as no major breakthrough technology was realised in tank design that needed a complete design from scratch. As such it was decided to take the Arjun Mk II and upgrade the tank with new upgrades (suggested and followed by Israel's Merkavatanks). Future tanks are expected to be based on the Arjun and will incorporate new technologies just as most other tanks.[102]

One of the concepts of FMBT disclosed by Dr. Avinash Chander (SA-to-RM) is to explore the possibility of a 2-man crew, sub-50ton tank with higher armour protection than Arjun Mk2. He said that DRDO is currently doing feasibility study of utilising the fighter aircraft's digital cockpit & weapons management systems. It can be assumed that this planned FMBT would have a fully automatic turret, larger ammunition storage, V-hull and smaller dimensions. Driver and Commander role would be retained for the 2 crews planned, with duplicated controls, with the Gunner/Loader roles completely automated.[103]

What is the strategy here? Can you take a guess? What is so futuristic of armata? How will it shatter pakistan morale?

In what way is Arjun inferior to Armata? Which technology does India lack to prevent indigenisation? It is just a matter of orders. We need large orders to make it worth the investment. Arjun is not fully indigenous because the numbers purchased is about 100 which makes no sense as Tanks are pretty cheap vehicles.

Give yoir arguments in full.

most of these deals are strategic in nature...Indian army is looking for Future MBT & Arjun is hardly futuristic....Armata offers a leap which DODO can't provide even in next 2 decade.

They only managed to indigenised 70% of T 90 & will be reaching 90% by 2020 at minimum while Armata is next generation technology which neither our enemies have or will have for long. Pakistani have nothing to match even T 90 & they recently rejected chinese junk for Ukrainian one.

Armata presence in battlefield will shatter paki morale & we can also get license to produced it in India & gradually indigenised it like T 90 & learn technology know how to build a real FMBT.

Well Russians figure out after Gulf war that T72 won't survive if its up against western tanks, to export, they clothed new name with superficial modification by upgraded T72m into T90s. They themselves said 60% of production line of T72 is common with T90s. What was not common, later supplied by DRDO.

Now Russians didn't inducted T90s in number, because of above reason and went for adding armor on its tank, even Chinese are adding more armor into their tanks. Knowing what modern Anti tank weapons and other Western tanks could do.

Now coming back to unmanned turret, is that autoloader sometimes misfire or misload, to avoid this all the armies had manual loader, Russians have auto loader. Not out to mention that many crew members lost arm, when they wére not focused, it was very unforgiving.

Now they went to next level by going for unmanned turret, with more protection to its crew. This means that Arjun tank crew protection concept is correct. Now all going for it. IA not accepting the same.

Less said about T90s better it is. Moscow has shown our best crews, become useless, when tanks( two tanks) give up. It was not even desert of Rajasthan.

Last but not least, DRDO asked IA for its requirements for FMBT, IA didnt know what to put in, they still dont know, thats why they asked, others to tell what their FMBT could do, with minimum requirements. DRDO are making the same based on its own understanding. DGMF and his department has to work hard, could say lot, but not saying. But i should say, its stupid idea, asking others what they could do, because, we dont know what FMBT should be.

Tanks are ordered based on its tank doctrine, doctrine is based on geographical locations and how they want to operate and take on its objectives, w.r.t enemies.

Now instead of our tank doctrine, they are asking others to show, what they could do with their FMBT, with minimum requirements.

Others will supply its export version, which is lower level of system, they will not supply state of art system. We are at others mercy. They will milk all they can.

I already posted FRCV, Future Ready Combat Vehicle, was drafted and made in such a way to keep drdo/Arjun MK3/FMBT out. Only T14 could fulfil, thus criminal stupidly.
How guaranteed is it that FRCV will be bought by India? Will MoD just sit and listen? Or will it simply end up like FGFA?

The way I see it, we are only asking for ToT and all manufacturing will be Indian. This is highly unlikely by anyone. And even if ToT is agreed, it will be priced too high.

About autoloader, they are inconvenient as the rounds have to be loaded according to the situation. Sometimes it is anti personnel round while sometimes it is anti tank round while some other time it is thermobaric round. Autoloader will find it difficult to sort these out without having a huge cabin with sorted rounds.

China was communist and hence US was against it. India, on the other hand was a banana republic and hence USA supplies it to keep it that way. If Indians feel the heat, it will radicalise Indians and India will no longer be banana republic.

USA gave food in 1966-1967 famine for India, thereby preventing death of about 1-2 crore people while they didn't bother giving any food to China where 2-3 crore died in famine. This is a classic example of US double talk on humanity.

We don't need Tianmen. We just need to be radical. But, that won't matter as the RFI only seems to seek specifications and design rather than import outright. The manufacturing is in India. Very strange RFI, IMO

Guys how about a tianmen square kind of protest to get India embargoed by every goddamn country for and purchasing arms???

I have started to like this idea.

I dont think the Russian will win. They have lost the tracked SP tender, will lose the FICV, and will most likely lose the FRCV. The whole armored corp is getting out of the Russian skin.

Tracked SP tender was peanuts, Roosies like the Amreekis are long to sink their claws long and deep into India. S-400, FGFA, Sukhoi upgrades, transport AC, Brahmos, seeker tech, nuke subs etc. they have enough share of the pie.

IA just upgraded T-72 and fast-tracked orders for more Tincan 90s. Doens't seem like shedding the bear skin to me, more like tightening the bear hug.

Actually, in the armored corps they are. I dont think the BMP2 replacement will be Russia, or the T72/90.

Sure, the tracked SPG program is peanuts, nevertheless their product lost to a new comer(L&T/Koreans) against the traditional OFB/Russian combo.

The BMP2 replacement is anything but peanuts, they tried to stop the FICV program with their BMP3, which failed miserably. They're pretty much forecasted to loss that as well, and I'll bet they'll lose FRCV as well.

Most of the given specifications including frontal armour of 1200 mm RHA equivalent is already acheived/bettered in Arjun mk 2. It also offers modularity in terms of design and arjun platform can serve as base for a family of heavy armoured vehicles.
Other features like 1500 hp engine and active protection system, 120 mm smoothbore gun, APFSDS with 800-1000 mm penetration (@2 Km) will be acheived in Arjun mk3/FMBT.
