Indian Navy to strengthen its under-water capabilities

Seeking to enhance its fleet of nuclear and conventional submarines through several multi-billion dollar deals, the Navy has appointed an officer to look after the acquisition and planning of its underwater vessels.

"Rear Admiral M T Moraes will take over as the Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Submarines) at the naval headquarters here Friday," the Navy said in a release.

The appointment assumes significance as the post was not being filled for the last many years and comes at a time when the Navy is planning to induct Russian Akula Class nuclear submarines, indigenously-built Arihant Class nuclear submarines and is looking to procure six Project-75I conventional submarines in the near future.

ACNS (SM) looks after perspective planning and acquisition of submarines for the Indian Navy, the release said.

The Navy is looking forward to strengthening its under-water capabilities in view of the increasing capabilities of Pakistani Navy and the presence of Chinese vessels in the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean.

The cost of the acquisition for the six P-75I submarines is expected to be more than Rs 50,000 crore.

In the recent times, the Pakistani Navy has inducted three of its Agosta 90B class submarines from Pakistan.

India currently operates a fleet of Russian-origin Kilo Class and German-origin HDW submarines and is mulling over inducting the first of its six Scorpene submarine in 2015.

Under its 30 year plan, the Navy is looking to induct 24 conventional submarines along with more than three nuclear submarines of the Arihant Class.

Yes we need some 5 SSBN and 10 SSNs. We can build 10 SSNs with the money we are going to spend on P-75I.

Both carriers, Shivalik class, Talwar class and Kolkata class will be ready by 2015. I hope they start the construction of P-15B, P-17A, LPD and P-75I by then. Akula will go with CBG but not arihant. It will act alone hiding somewhere near enemy territory ready to fire missiles anytime if asked.

Indian Navy moves to fast-track submarine acquisition plans

The Indian Navy has appointed a senior officer to oversee and fast-track all submarine acquisition plans, even as it grapples with a depleting underwater force and rising levels of submarines in the inventories of nations inimical to Indian interests.

The ScorpeneRear admiral MT Moraes has been appointed as the new assistant chief of naval staff (submarines), a position in naval headquarters that is being revived after a long time.

He assumed command on Friday.

He will be replaced as flag officer (submarines) at Visakhapatnam by rear admiral Srikant.

Russia to deliver 2nd series of MiG 29K fighters by next year

Russia will complete the delivery of 16 carrier-borne MiG-29K/KUB fighters to the Indian Navy by the end of this year for deployment on the refurbished Admiral Gorshkov aircraft carrier, a top official of the aircraft manufacturer said Wednesday.

A top official of the Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG said that 11 fighters had already been delivered under the first contract, and the deliveries of jets of the second series will begin from next year.

"From the first contract for 16 jets which included 12 single seater MiG-29K and two double seater trainer-cum -fighter MiG-29KUB, we have already delivered 11 fighters, including 9 single seater and 2 double seater jets to the Indian Navy," CEO of RAC MiG Sergei Korotkov said.

Talking to a group of reporters at the MiG plant here Korotkov said that under the second USD 1.5 billion contract signed in March 2010 for the supply of 29 MiG-29K/KUB naval fighters, the first aircraft was laid on the assembly line on Tuesday in the presence of a senior Indian representative.

He said the deliveries of the jets of the second series will begin from the next year and could be completed by the time of delivery of INS Vikramaditya to the Indian Navy.

Korotkov said he was not discouraged by the loss of his MiG-35 fighter jet in the IAF's global tender for 126 medium multi-role combat aircraft (MMRCA).

He said that a new contract for the supply of 24 more naval MiG-29K fighters is expected to be signed soon with India.

"It is quite possible that it could be signed on the sidelines of the 10th International Aerospace Salon (MAKS) scheduled here later this month," Korotkov said, adding "at least we have passed on all necessary papers to the Defence Ministry for approval.
Working on parallel contract with India, RAC MiG has 'deeply modernised' six MiG-29 fighters in service with IAF at its plants in Russia, later the technology for their upgradation will be transferred to India for refurbishing the rest of the IAF's MiG-29 fleet to MiG-29UPG.

In response to a question about the crash of a twin-seater MiG-29KUB naval fighter in Astrakhan region in June, the MiG officials said it was not for the delivery to the Indian Navy.

MiG Chief Korotkov said his corporation is developing a carrier-based fighter for the Russian Navy, on the basis of MiG-29K for India, which will also have French navigation systems, but would be adapted to use longer range Russian air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons, export of which is banned.

Indian Navy to acquire six more submarines

Six more submarines will be acquired by the Navy under Project-75(India) apart from nearly half a dozen such vessels which are under construction under an earlier programme, Defence Minister A K Antony said.

"To increase the submarine fleet of Indian Navy, a programme for construction of six submarines is currently underway at Mazagaon Docks Limited under Project-75," Antony told the Rajya Sabha.

In his written reply to a question on acquisition of new generation submarines, Antony said, "Further, Acceptance of Necessity for acquisition of six more submarines under Project-75(India) has been accorded by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC)."

Government constantly reviews the security environment and accordingly decides about induction of appropriate defence equipments and platforms including submarines for the Navy, he told the House.

"In addition, the existing anti-submarine capability is being augmented by induction of surface and air assets," he said.

Replying to a question on harbour security plans, the Minister said, "Indian Navy has detailed security plan in place like Quick Reaction Group (QRG) and Quick Reaction Team (QRT), sentries at appropriate positions within the harbour, landward access control and seaward access control among others."

project-75I is very old and delayed one. This acquisition should be our last foreign purchase of submarines.

P.S. DRDO is developing AIP.
