France Purchases 200 Meteor Missiles
By PIERRE TRAN
Published: 3 Jan 2011 14:07

PARIS - France has ordered a batch of Meteor missiles for an undisclosed amount, the Ministry of Defense said in a Jan. 3 statement.

"Defense Minister Alain Juppé welcomes the order for 200 Meteor long-range air-to-air missiles to equip the Rafales of the Air Force and Navy," the statement said.

The Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA), the French government's arms procurement agency, asked its British counterpart, Defence Equipment and Support, to place the order with MBDA UK, the prime contractor for cooperative European missile program.

The British authorities signed the contract with MBDA UK on Dec. 22, a DGA spokesman said.

The first Meteors will be delivered to the French military in 2018, the statement said. The missile will undergo integration and certification on the Rafale fighter jet in the intervening period, the DGA spokesman said.

The French government signaled its intention to order the 200 Meteor missiles in 2009, when it published the 2010 defense budget, for which 17.02 billion euros ($22.7 billion) was earmarked for equipment purchases.

In September, Sweden's FMV procurement agency signed a production contract with Saab Aerosystems for the Meteor, which includes integration of the missile on the JAS 39 Gripen NG fighter jet over four years for an estimated cost of $34 million.

Britain and Spain also have signed production orders for the Meteor, which was developed in a cooperative program backed by lead nation Britain, along with France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden.

The Gripen has been used for tests of the Meteor, a beyond-visual-range weapon equipped with a ramjet. The missile is expected to be operational with the Swedish Air Force in 2015.

Besides MBDA UK, the main industrial partners in the Meteor program are MBDA France and MBDA Italy, Saab and Inmize of Spain, the DGA said.

France, Britain To Hold Weeklong Air Exercise

PARIS - The French Air Force has organized a large-scale, weeklong exercise with the British Royal Air Force - which is expected to send over Tornado fighters, aerial tankers and AWACS aircraft - as part of the enhanced cooperation agreed between the two countries, an Air Force spokesman here said Jan. 13.

The exercise, dubbed Thousand Mistral, will be held March 21-25 in France, the spokesman, Maj. Eric Trihoreau, said.

The RAF is due to fly over six Tornadoes, two VC10 in-flight refueling jets, and one or two Airborne Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) planes to take part.

The exercise is part of the enhanced cooperation envisioned in the British-French defense treaty signed Nov. 2. The British fighters will be based at the Nancy airbase in eastern France, the VC10s will go to Istres in the south, and the AWACS will be headed to Avord in central France. There will also be a ground unit of force protection troops, comprising RAF commandoes, at the Dijon airbase.

The British aircraft will be integrated into their functional-equivalent French squadrons, the spokesman said.

The French Air Force will deploy around four Mirage 2000D fighter-bombers; four 2000N nuclear bombers, used as conventional strike assets; four M2000-5; some Rafales; two C-135 FR air tankers; and the Alphajet fast jet trainer. Some 25 to 30 French aircraft will fly in the exercise, which will include red and blue teams operating against each other.

Demonstrator Eurocopter X4 will be equipped with a number of advanced technologies

Moscow. March 2. Airports - Eurocopter company in 2011 due to present its new technologies demonstrator X4, intended to replace the medium-sized helicopters AS365 Dauphin, reports Flightglobal.

According to CEO Lutz Bertling, the new machine will be revolutionary in terms of the application of advanced technologies. According to him, the aim of Eurocopter - to make the same revolution in the helicopter, which was run wire system on the aircraft Airbus. Previously reported that demonstartor X4 will be equipped with motors of Turbomeca.

Not yet clear whether the Eurocopter to develop diesel engines for vehicles of class Dauhphin, but earlier L. Bertling said that these engines will be presented for light helicopters in accordance with the program Bluecopter. From this program demonstrator X4 may be some elements of the technology Blue Pulse and Blue Edge. Blue Edge Technology involves the construction of the main propeller blades and helps reduce noise and improve the characteristics of the propeller.

Blade Pulse - is an active technology, the basic principle of which is mounted on the blades of the moving plates that automatically track the alignment of the blades throughout the flight. It is also reported that this system helps reduce vibration in the helicopter cabin, bringing it closer to the jets.

The project X4 company Eurocopter is working on support systems for pilots. The purpose of these systems is to facilitate control helicopter during operations in the vicinity of the earth, flyby of obstacles, run slow maneuvers, such as approach to oil platforms, especially in poor visibility conditions. Among these systems, 2-dimensional digital navigational displays, automatic change of flight plan in case of danger, a 4-dimensional module controls the autopilot, etc.

French Navy: A record level of activity

07/04/2011

With up to 7000 men and women at sea, the French navy is currently showing a record level of activity. Pacific to the Indian Ocean through the Mediterranean, the Caribbean or the Atlantic, the surface fleet, the submarine force and naval aviation are on deck to the four corners of the planet. In 2010 already, the activity was very strong, a historic peak being registered on December 19 with 42 ships and 6,090 men to the sea, But with the launch of Operation Harmattan in Libya last month, the record has been largely defeated. Thus, on March 23, the Naval Action Force, which comprises units of the surface Navy, accounted 58 vessels at sea, including 39 deployed oversea, 6716 or marine (5176 extended) mobilized. There are also the tasks assigned to submarines (nuclear deterrence, maritime security approaches, escort, ...), whose intelligence deployments remain confidential in nature, like the navy commando operations, found the Afghan theater or on the African continent. As for naval aviation, it also was not idle. The air group on board the Charles de Gaulle has 10 Rafale, 10 SEM and 2 Hawkeye, not to mention the helicopters from the aircraft carrier and those of other buildings in the battle group units or helicopter carrier sailing under other latitudes. Maritime patrol fleets are also stretched, involved in particular, in addition to hexagonal approaches, the Mediterranean, Africa and Indian Ocean. As for aircraft based in France, they are still active, including helicopters for rescue missions.

The carrier battle group (©: NAVY)

To date, the main area of "‹"‹operations the Navy is obviously in Libya, where France is involved in an international coalition under resolution 1973 Security Council of the UN. Around the Charles de Gaulle are deployed frigates Forbin, Dupleix, Jean Bart and Aconite, and a nuclear submarine attack and the replenishment tanker Meuse, which provides logistical support and thus enables the CSG to continue its operations over time.

The other major area of "‹"‹activity of the French fleet is located in the Indian Ocean. It includes the building of Mistral Projection and Command, and the frigate Georges Leygues, which participate in the second edition of the mission Jeanne d'Arc. The fight against piracy off the Horn of Africa is particularly provided by the surveillance frigates based in La Réunion (not to mention the Marines integrated protection teams on board the French military ships). While the frigate Hénaff sailed to the Indian Ocean, the frigate Guépratte involved in the fight against terrorism in the CTF 150, the command of Somali anti-piracy is given to France from April 4 by Admiral Kerignard, who runs the operations from the command ship and refueling Somme.

The Guépratte escorting a merchant ship (©: NAVY)

Meanwhile, discreetly, buildings based in the Caribbean are committed against drug traffickers. Thus, the frigate Ventôse intercepted in late March, a boat carrying 2.5 tons of cocaine, 3.6 tons seized in addition to a few weeks earlier by the Germinal. These actions against drug trafficking, conducted with other governments and international cooperation are also the responsibility of units cruising off the French coast, notably in the Mediterranean, where hunting of fast-boats continues.

Finally, note the presence in West Africa, transport landing craft Lightning. Currently deployed highbush, Foudre class, with large capacity aircraft, amphibious, and command hospital, is clearly ready to assist the Licorne force deployed in Ivory Coast. It is obviously very difficult to detail the activity of all the French ships at sea, but the small patrol boat to the aircraft carrier, through the tug and building projection, the Navy has in recent weeks, implemented much of its capabilities. It is also, somewhere, a feat since, despite the cuts in budgets and reductions in size in men and material, the French fleet comes to carrying out very diverse, geographically very remote and require the use of the most diverse tools.

100,000nm for Charles de Gaulle

6/04/2011

Le porte-avions Charles de Gaulle

Monday, April 4, 2011, during the second replenishment of the mission, the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle has crossed the symbolic threshold of 100,000 nautical miles covered since late 2008. This distance is 4 times around the earth or half the distance that separates Earth from the moon.

Since his admission to active duty, there is a little less than 10 years, aircraft carriers represent over 342,000 nautical miles on the odometer, or 16 trips around the world ...

3rd BPC Dixmude begins sea trials

Built by yards STX France, the building projection and command Diksmuide sailed yesterday, Saint Nazaire, for its first sea trials By Saturday, the ship will conduct various tests propulsion and platform. Put on hold in January 2010, Diksmuide, commissioned in April 2009 under the stimulus of the economy, is expected to join Toulon in July. Var from the base of the Navy, DCNS will work on the development of weapons systems and combat system for delivery of the ship early 2012. Diksmuide then join the first two PCBs of the French fleet, the Mistral and Tonnerre, who had been assembled in Brest (with a front half built in Saint-Nazaire) and were delivered in 2006 and 2007 by DCNS.

BPC Diksmuide (©: BERNARD Prézelin)

Outside the industrial assembly, the Diksmuide differs from his elders through various improvements, including adding an additional thruster and improved visibility at the gateway to defense.
199 meters long for a displacement of 21,500 tons burden, PCBs can embarquer16 heavy helicopters, two landing craft type of EDA-R (derived from L-CAT CNIM), 70 vehicles (including 13 Leclerc tanks) and 450 men Troop. With extensive infrastructure of command, with a PC up to 150 operator positions, they also have a hospital board. A fourth ship of this type must be built for the French navy. Its commissioning is planned for 2019/2020 successor to transport landing craft Siroco. His eldest, TCD Foudre, will in turn replaced by Diksmuide.
DCNS and STX seek, moreover, to sell the concept of PCBs to foreign navies. An agreement, in particular, was signed in January with Russia, which wants to build four buildings of this type. Negotiations are continuing to reach an agreement.

A400M Engine Wins Safety Certification
By ANDREW CHUTER
Published: 6 May 2011 14:18

LONDON - The turboprop engine powering the Airbus A400M airlifter has been certified by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

Europrop International (EPI), the four-company consortium responsible for developing and building the TP400-D6 engine, said the milestone came after a test campaign that included more than 8,000 flight hours and more than 4,000 hours of ground testing.

The May 6 announcement came just days after EPI said it had signed an amended contract with Airbus Military settling outstanding issues related to the much-delayed and over-budget transport plane.

EPI involves partner companies Rolls-Royce, Snecma, MTU Aero Engines and Industria de Turbo Propulsores.

In a statement, EPI said the TP400 is the first large turboprop certified by EASA and the first military engine to be cleared by the agency to civil standards from the outset. At 11,000 shaft horsepower in a three-shaft configuration, the TP400 will be the most powerful turboshaft engine to enter service in the West.

Military certification is expected next year ahead of A400M deliveries getting underway to lead customer France around the turn of the year.

Airbus Military has orders from seven European countries for 170 aircraft, with an additional four being destined for export customer Malaysia.

The seven partner nations in the program are Belgium, Britain, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain and Turkey.

DCNS completes first Gowind hull

Today is the prototype of the family of corvettes and offshore patrol vessels of the family Gowind is set afloat. Built on the site DCNS Lorient, The Adroit was released last Saturday's Hall building. The building was transferred to a barge being towed yesterday all around the pool number 3. The dry dock was then emptied and the barge separated from his package before the pool is then put into water and the hull fleet. DCNS and its subcontractors will now complete the ship in order to make this summer the first sea trials at year end, the patrol will be made available to the Navy, which will arm for three years . He will be based in Toulon and attached to the Naval Action Force (FAN). The Adroit was built by DCNS to equity in the project Hermes. The partnership with the French navy to allow the industry to have experienced a ship at sea and, through feedback, to make any changes. DCNS based in fact, many hope in selling this new type of buildings to export. Gowind family has also been available in different versions, the most advanced displays displacement of 2500 tons and can carry a fairly substantial weapons (antiship missiles, surface to air system, 76mm cannon). Apart from foreign navies, the domestic market is also covered by DCNS because the French fleet would need 18 units Offshore Patrol Vessel type (OPV) to replace in the next 15 years, his patrol and surveillance frigates.

The Adroit at its exit site (©: DCNS)

Long of 87 yards for a displacement of about 1500 tons burden, The Adroit will have a light artillery (20mm and 12.7mm), and a system for launching two speedboats in the table back. It may also board a helicopter or unmanned drones. Side equipment, DCNS has established an "investors club", through which several groups will make available materials. Thus participate in the operation with Denmark's Terma radar scant intelligence, the French Sagem, Thales, and inertial for Lacroix, military communications and decoy launchers, the Italian OTO-Melara 20mm gun on or German Links + Rechts lights for aviation. For these manufacturers, the Hermes program allows to make their products in a modern building, "certified" by the French navy and taken to participate in many missions, exercises, port calls and representations abroad.

ABC has two engines of 2800 kW each, the new OPV will reach 21 knots and has a range of 8000 nautical economic speed, about three weeks of operations. The building will have a crew of 30 sailors and will have accommodations for 29 additional people, such as special forces. Adoption of civil standards to reduce costs, the vessel was specially designed to meet emerging threats, including asymmetric (footbridge, water cannons, single mast ...) and provide a vast array of missions ranging from Maritime Surveillance the fight against terrorism, to fight against piracy and illegal trafficking, the police or fisheries.
