US, France offer help in fight against terrorism
* Gilani wants roadmap for Pak-French nuclear cooperation
* French official assures PM of provision of military equipment
ISLAMABAD: French and US officials on Thursday offered support to Pakistan in its fight against terrorism.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s Military Staff Adviser Admiral Edourard Guillaud and the International Security Assistance Force’s (ISAF) Commander in Afghanistan General Stanley McChrystal met Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Kayani and discussed matters of professional interest, Online reported.
General McChrystal lauded the Pakistan Army’s efforts in the war against terrorism and added the ISAF would support Pakistan’s efforts, Online quoted its sources.
They said Kayani raised the issue of drone attacks in Pakistan with the ISAF commander.
Admiral Guillaud also called on President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and discussed matters of mutual interest.
“The Friends of Pakistan initiative, the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons and the drive against militants came under discussion,” the president’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar said.
Babar said during President Zardari’s recent visit to France, it was decided that new areas of cooperation would be explored besides enhancing support in the energy sector, including civilian nuclear power plants, trade, civil aviation and defence. He said the French president had also announced 300 million euros in economic assistance and another 12 million euros for rehabilitation of the internally displaced persons during Zardari’s visit. Meanwhile, a statement by the French embassy said the fight against terror was a matter of concern for the international community and France sought to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of defence and security.
It said France’s objective was to offer political and military cooperation and support to the Pakistani authorities in strengthening the fight against the Taliban, adding that France wanted to contribute to regional security and stability through a reinforced dialogue on the matters.
Proposal: Meanwhile, in his meeting with Guillaud, Prime Minister Gilani proposed that the governments of Pakistan and France should chalk out a roadmap for pragmatic cooperation in the field of civil nuclear energy. He said a working group could be established to develop an agreed way forward on nuclear cooperation. Guillaud commended the government for its determination to eradicate extremism from Pakistan.
