Indore: Continuing to target the Nehru-Gandhi family, BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi on Friday said that poverty remained the theme of their speeches through four generations, starting from Jawaharlal Nehru, but "nothing changed" on the ground.

"I request political pundits to get the speeches of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and also of Sonia and Rahul and I bet that you will find that 80 out of 100 things they speak about poverty have remained the same," Mr Modi told an election rally.

"The four generations of these (two) families have talked about poverty all the time and even today, they are doing the same thing, which proves that they are unsuccessful and won't be able to run the country," he said.

He again trained his guns on Rahul Gandhi, saying his about poverty being a state of mind was a "joke" on the poor.

UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Mr Modi said, had recently promised to provide 35 kgs of wheat free of cost to the poor. "I challenge her to implement this promise in Congress-ruled Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh," he said.

The Gujarat Chief Minister also blamed the Congress-led UPA government for border issues and claimed there was no coordination between the Defence Minister and the Army. "When Pakistani forces shot our soldiers, the Minister said it was an act of terrorists but the Indian Army stated it was an act of Pakistan's Army", he said.

Mr Modi also repeated the allegation that Congress was creating hurdles in the development of BJP-ruled states and cited the example of Dahod (Gujarat)-Indore rail line project whose foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself but the project map was yet to be prepared.

Highlighting the progress made by Madhya Pradesh under the leadership of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the agriculture, power and tourism sectors, Mr Modi said that Mr Chouhan had taken the state out of the BIMARU bracket - an acronym referring to the four states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh over economic backwardness.

Sir, though no fan of the Family, isn't poverty a worldwide phenomenon, and exists even in the west? And, if there is some magical way to eradicate it, why are people in US and EU still on doles? IMHO, poverty eradication not only requires government involvement, but more importantly, is a personal battle that needs to be won.

Poverty is a world wide phenomenon.

Do they make a song and dance over it?

No. They address it and try to remove it as best they can.

We make it a national pastime.

    That is the difference.

Let the leaders also talk of the goodness of our country.

Imagine that fool Kapil Sibal had the audacity to state that the price rise is because the poor has started eating two vegetables a day!

The manner he said it was most offensive.

He could have explained the issue of supply and demand in a more sensible way.

But these idiots think they own the people as the rajas, zamindars and jagirdars did in the past.

Indira Gandhi had made an election slogan during the 1970s, "Garibi hatao, desh bachao." Little did and still do the people know that the only slogan for India to prosper is, "congress hatao, desh bachao."

Rahul Gandhi would know nothing about poverty.

Sonia Gandhi possible would have known since her father, Stefano Maino, was a building mason.

Sonia Gandhi's birthplace, 31, Contrada Maini (Maini street), Lusiana

    Not fancy by Italian standards.

    Yes he did.

Her father, Stefano Maino, fought against the Soviet military alongside Hitler's Wehrmacht on the eastern front in World War I and he called himself a loyal supporter of Benito Mussolini and Italy's National Fascist Party.
