For 'distressed' Hindus, VHP helpline is just a call away

NEW DELHI: The room in Delhi's RK Puram has three people answering phone calls, but this is no ordinary help centre. The three people answering calls are working out of a Vishwa Hindu Parishad office and this is part of the Hindu Helpline, which aims to be a one-stop shop for all things related to the faith — from advice on rituals to guidance on what's to be done if your daughter is being harassed by "Muslim boys".

It's a helpline planned by VHP's Pravin Togadia for the country's majority community and the people staffing the phones insist India's Hindus need a service such as this. A caller who identifies himself as Pankaj Pradhan from Ranchi says he's in Ramanathapuram and needs help in getting a Navagraha puja conducted. The next is from Atmaram in Mumbai who says his plot has been taken over illegally by a Muslim builder. There are a few calls asking about the most auspicious time for rakhi.

Then comes the kind of call that everyone at the help centre knows is important. "I am speaking from Gurgaon. A group of Muslim boys has been harassing my daughter for a while now. Can you help?" Deepak Kumar, the coordinator of the Hindu Helpline in New Delhi, immediately takes charge and asks the caller to drop by the VHP office. Kumar, who runs a business of selling water purifiers, meticulously writes down the details.

"Do they also click pictures when your daughter walks by? Has he talked to her yet? Does your daughter have a phone?" The call centre functions mainly out of Pune but has help centres in nearly 50 cities, including Delhi.

Handled 85,000 Calls in 2 Years

VHP, which celebrates its 50th anniversary next week, says the service is run by 40 people who answer calls full time and boasts of a nearly 30,000-strong network ready to respond to any Hindu's call for help.

The helpline project was launched with the sole purpose of showing "the Hindu brotherhood in action", Togadia told ET. "From clearing doubts on Hinduism to ensuring a hassle-free stay in an unknown city and providing advice on legal problems, we try to provide instant help to the caller. The attempt is to make the Hindu feel proud of being part of a network of over 100 crore Hindus," the VHP leader says.

The service has handled about 85,000 calls in two years. For helpless and frustrated callers, the community initiative offers hope that their concerns will be addressed, Kumar says.

"There have been cases where people have alerted us of cows being taken into madrasas," suggesting that the schools could also be doubling up as illegal abattoirs. "We have rescued them by going in groups. We are doing it for the Hindus, like Christians and Muslims help their people. Our attempt is to make sure no Hindu feels helpless in this country," Kumar says.

Volunteers say they receive at least 80 calls daily, ranging from issues such as Hindu tourists stuck in pilgrimage spots to complaints about Muslim neighbours. Hindus curious about rituals are told about the "scientific principles" that underpin them and advised on auspicious days and timings for religious activities. Legal, financial and medical help is also provided to Hindus, according to brochures for the helpline, which has eminent retired senior civil servants, doctors and lawyers on its advisory board.

The service is publicised by Hindu organisations, ashrams and temples. The volunteers are mostly businessmen or students selected for who they know and their willingness to serve the Hindu community, besides having access to resources, such as a vehicle that can be used in an emergency.

Dealing with the 'harassment' of Hindu girls is a significant part of their work. "We get a large number of calls about Muslim boys harassing Hindu girls — at least 20 in Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi alone, everyday," Kumar says. Of course, the VHP men are scrupulously law-abiding, he's quick to add. "We don't take these matters into our hands but we make sure the police and the community know it and do something about it."

    Good initiative.
Given the way the so-called peace loving community is involved in foreceful conversions and gangrapes(meerut and ghaziabad case) hindus will soon need such services in every town and village of India.

Ha ha, you hit nail on its head. This hindu helpline is absolute nonsense. It would have been great if it was an helpline for all women in distress.

Yes but any reaction from RSS or VHP will lead to Riot & so called secular opposition will add in more fuel to burst in the end Modi will be blamed for that as it happened in 2002 after Godhra Train incident

a covert operation using IB to take down these scum bags who are getting involved in such type of activity in trying to fuel Riots:thumb:

Are you suggesting that India adopt a two tier legal system based on religion? By suggesting that a victim (outraged Hindu father) call the hotline if his daughter is harassed by Muslim boys, but on the other hand call the police if the harassers are fellow Hindus then you're basically endorsing such a system. If so, how would this work?

They repeatedly mentioned that their services are for Hindus and didn't mention anyone else, so I think one can safely deduce that they're not interested in helping anyone who is not a Hindu.

I'm not so sure; calling the hotline people to intervene on behalf of a Hindu vs Hindu conflict may have limitations. Sure if it's something simple like two neighbors about to kill each other because they are unable to decide upon an auspicious date for the Laxmi Puja then yea, the VHP rapid action force might able to help (they must have a Jyotish on call 24/7).

However when it comes to someone's daughter who's being harassed by Hindu boys instead of "Muslim boys" then there may be some logistical barriers.
Let's take a look at this case study...
Clearly the VHP's strategy for making Hindus feel safe is by threatening mob violence against Muslims. But what happens if both parties are Hindus? Sure, India has a rich history of lynching members of the lower caste for alleged sexual harassment cases, but any sensible mob will find it difficult to take sides when both sides are Hindus from the same caste.

Why sir, are you planning on opening an alternative hotline to help the Hindu on Hindu violence and non hindu victims ?

You must help @Energon out in opening up his helpline. He seems to do some social service to India despite being an american:thumb:

No need. If they help Hindu women, it would be more than enough. There are enough daughter selling brigade aka bleed heart libtards along with Islamic/christian organisations to help them. Its Hindus who have no where to go

No sir, I was just trying to ridicule all the dumb people who lap up asinine ideas like hotlines for the beleaguered Hindus whose daughters are being harassed by "Muslim boys". And yes, India is much in need of public service that includes ridiculing dumb people with dumb notions.

Why am I surprised, the leftists have nothing useful to contribute to the security of Hindus other than mock the only people who try!

I am pretty sure the people who would be benefitted from a service would disagree. Since you are providing no alternate yourself other than offering your usual nonsense about tolerance , it would be better to allow those who would help us to help. Besides, they are not going to use your money or anything for that and its hardly any american's business

    @Energon -

Few years back during a phase of rampant `Love Jihad` in Kerala in which Hindu and Christian girls were lured and converted by young Muslim men, Christian organisations requested and were helped by VHP Helpline. FYI -

'Love Jihad' racket: VHP, Christian groups find common cause
    TNN | Oct 13, 2009, 08.00AM IST

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: 'Love Jihad', a religious conversion racket which lures gullible girls by feigning love, has brought rivals Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Christian groups in Kerala together.

The two have decided to join hands to combat the ''social evil'', which they claim is hitting their respective communities hard.

''Both Hindu and Christian girls are falling prey to the design. So we are cooperating with the VHP on tackling this. We will work together to whatever extent possible,'' K S Samson, an office-bearer of Kochi-based Christian Association for Social Action (CASA), a voluntary Christian association, told TOI.

Samson said some days ago, CASA got to know about a Hindu family in a Christian parish where a school going girl was the victim. ''We immediately referred it to the VHP,'' he said, adding the saffron outfit has helped them in many cases.

The Parishad on its part has started a 'Hindu Helpline', which claims to have received as many as 1,500 calls in last three months.

''Many of these callers wanted to congratulate us for our efforts and some were threats,'' said Vineesh, who manages the helpline.

The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council has come out with a set of guidelines for Christian parents warning them to be more careful about their wards.

''It's shocking but it is happening. Many Christian families are getting affected,'' said Father Johny Kochuparambil, secretary of Council's Commission for Social Harmony and Vigilance.

''We are careful as this is a sensitive issue and could even lead to a religious conflict. But now that the Kerla high court too has interfered in the matter, we have decided to take a stand,'' said Kochuparambil.

The high court has asked the DGP to probe the charges and report to it.

Ah yes, the motto of this service is...
Too bad the guy forgets to mention that a vast majority of Hindus are made to feel helpless by other Hindus who are either apathetic to, or directly abet in their oppression and misery. If these people really wanted to help Hindus they would set up a nationwide infrastructure to reach out and help the countless Hindus who are generationally locked into unfair indentured servitude to their upper caste Hindu landlords; they would clamp down on dowry practices and push for land reform to mitigate farmer suicides; they would set up hotlines to intervene on behalf of unborn female fetuses who's parents are contemplating abortion; their hotlines would keep a registry of schools where teachers don't show up. But of course they're never going to do, or even talk about such things, because they're too busy investigating serious cases of "Muslim boys" who talk to Hindu girls, and all their efforts are diverted to the mission of finding out whether the Muslim boys are taking pictures of the girl on their cell phones (after all that is what any self respecting horny Hindu boy would do).

Stop deluding yourself, these people aren't offering any meaningful services ... they're merely fueling the persecution complex. Now I realize that you love this hindu persecution stuff, unfortunately it has no empirical value.
