MiG-41. This superfast interceptor is not yet off the drawing board at the Mikoyan military aircraft design bureau, but the final draft may be ready already within the next couple of years with mass production scheduled to begin before 2025, Zvezda television channel reported on Friday.

There is not very much known about the MiG-41 because everything about this plane, just like with all top modern military projects, remains classified. All we know is that the Mikoyan bureau has been working on the design of a long-range interceptor, based on their MiG-31, since 2013 as part of a plan to replace the ageing fleet of MiG-31 fighter jets whose active service life expires in 2028.

Even though the MiG-31 is the fastest military aircraft around, it will eventually have to make way for newer and more advanced types of aircraft.Like the MiG-41, which will be years and years ahead of its predecessors and able to intercept even the hypersonic drones now being developed in the United States no existing missiles, except Russia’s S-500 will theoretically be able to shoot down.

“The MiG-41 will embody all the advantages of the MiG-31 fighter-interceptor,” Alexander Tarnayev, a member of the State Duma’s Defense Committee, said. This will require numerous testing platforms, which may be why hundreds of MiG-31s will be overhauled and put into service with the Russian Air Force.

The main features of the MiG-41 are not yet known, but one thing is clear: a plane flying faster than missiles (the MiG-41 is designed to fly at Mach 4.0 and even Mach 4.3) is a convincing deterrent against any aggression.

It means this is a replacement of Mig 25. It is a well come development. We must buy few.

Still got time. Russia themselves will start production in 2025. They won't be selling to other countries soon after production as well.

I've heard rumors that just like we secretly took MiG 25 and kept it hidden until Kargil war, we have 2 MiG 31 stationed at our Tajikistan airbase. I can't recall the source so take it with a grain of salt. But seems plausible. No other plane is suitable to be stationed at Tajikistan.

It's just the sign of harsh times in Russia in 90-s, when VVS had no money to even update planes and systems, not speaking about buy a new ones.

Did Ukraine inherit any Mig 25/31 from Soviet times?

Can some give me some estimate about what kind of G-forces the pilot of such a fast plane will experience, if he was to use it in combat?

    Hey, anyone remember the SR-71?

It was the only aircraft capable of out-running EVERYTHING, or atleast flying way above their altitude for a pretty long time.

the MiG-31 as a high-altitude, near Mach-3 interceptor was not enough to match the SR-71's performance, but it did have weapons that it could use, and it had a very high service ceiling that was a deterrent to the mighty Blackbird. Not to mention that crazy radar :)

Will the MiG-41 surpass the obvious expectations we will expect from the MiG?

Personally, I don't see how airframes, modern or not, can reach those Mach 4 speeds without tearing themselves apart very fast.

The MiG-31, it was claimed COULD do mach 3+, but the engines would suffer damage, not to mention the airframe and the SR-71 has crossed those speeds multiple times, but its airframe was extremely maintenance intensive.

    :hmm:

Waiting to see if they can do it.

    @Anupu

Another thing to note, is that at these high speeds, the aircraft is not going to turn much, so it's relegated to hit and run, flyby tactics instead of face to face engagements.

Yeah, but they plan to make it an interceptor. It needs to engage in combat. But I think you are right, that must be the plan.

The problem with fast planes and missiles the faster you go the harder to turn/change course

Knowing the limitations of human reflexes, can the pilot manoeuvre the machine at mach 4 speed?

Actually Mig-25 Foxbat was a direct result of SR-71. It was made to intercept SR-71 with its speed and missiles. Untill then there was no fighter able to do that. But in speed, yes SR-71 still rules the race which did generally flew at Mach 1.5. But at Mach 4, you seriously need to think about the pilots. Because in SR-71 they had to specially made the suit for the pilots to withstand the altitude and G force.

Maybe this will be helpful for us just like Brahmos. They won't have the money to complete development and manufacturing. We can jointly develop.

The G force will be overwhelming, yes. But you wouldn't need to turn if you are drag racing with a missile. Just need to keep it well behind you. It all depends on the range of the missile too. You can't just keep going forward with the missile behind you. You can't turn and thus any enemy aircraft can shoot you down.
