Famed surrender site added to Saratoga Battlefield
If it hadn't been for a politician having a little free time to explore his interest in history, an important local historical site might have been lost.

"On a rainy day in 2006, on a chance visit to a Schuylerville realty office, I saw a picture of an historical marker on property that was for sale," Assemblyman Steve Englebright, of Suffolk County, told about 200 people Saturday morning in a special ceremony that celebrated the unveiling of the "Sword Surrender Site," a new addition to the Saratoga National Historical Park. "I contacted then-Sen. Roy McDonald, who immediately set about to purchase the property."

The grassy knoll, which is about one mile south of Schuylerville, was the place where Gen. John Burgoyne surrendered his sword to Gen. Horatio Gates to end the 1777 Battles of Saratoga.
