Marc Andreessen colonialism remark: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg calls it ‘deeply upsetting’

After Facebook’s Free basics was booted out of India lately, Facebook’s board member Marc Andreessen had taken to Twitter to express disdain, which included his anti-colonialism remark (now deleted) for Indians. Now, Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg has distanced himself and the company from statements made by Andreessen.

After Facebook released a statement saying, “We strongly reject the sentiments expressed by Marc Andreessen last night regarding India”, Zuckerberg has taken to writing a personal note stating he found the comments deeply upsetting.

    What the westard tweeted,

That man was made to apologize and that story has gone viral across all Silicon Valley media giant. Everyone has reported on it. These British people are taught fake history in their syllabus which tells them that colonialism was a good thing for India therefore they never think twice before saying stupid things like this. Even if you see the Oxford debate of Shashi Tharoor, many British held the view that colonizing India was worth it for Indians because "India got railways in return". This is not a fringe view, this is a mainstream view that Britain promotes through its propaganda machinery. They even cancelled their reparations last year claiming that India has enough money for a space mission but they conveniently forgot that the reparations had nothing to do with space missions or the size of our army or economy, it was a moral obligation on their part to cover for the damage they have done to India.

Not just India, these rats are equally condescending to people of other ethnicities, including the ones who are a part of their union. Look at their relationship with Irish, Scottish people. In fact, on the birth anniversary Napolean, who the French consider as a national hero, the British propaganda machine BBC aired a documentary magnifying embarrassing traits of Napolean claiming that he had large bleeding piles hanging from his anus and he had to tie those piles with a cloth to be able to sit on a horse. This caused a major diplomatic row between France and Britain.

    British = Filth.

India is probably the second largest market for FB (after the US.)
And India has the largest potential for FB, considering that
    1. a large % of indians speak english but only a tiny percentage of indians currently use FB and a gigantic % do not use/can not use.
    2. FB can not rule china; they have their own FB equivalents and CCP won't allow FB.

So this comment not smart on that guy's part. :)

But we should thank him because now it will be much easier to whip up anti Facebook sentiments instead of going the long path of explaining how internet monopoly works. Facebook will become the posterboy for TRAI's justification to ban differential pricing in the name of free services. Already Modi govt has started an inquiry against other similar freebie traps that the US had laid in the name of 'Philantrocapitalism'. Gates foundation is also under the scanner now for providing funds to NGOs to lobby for American drugs to be included in the list of mandatory state sponsored life saving drugs. These will be replaced by Indian made drugs.

If he was sarcastic he would have simply raised his hands when the controversy broke out instead of issuing an apology. That is a view many Brits hold, without any sarcasm. Their history books tell them that Britain did a favor to India by colonizing us.

Yes, socialism has not helped us so we moved on to neo-capitalist reforms but that is no excuse to endorse colonialism. Colonialism and capitalism can exist without each other. Nations have been able to build their own railways without having to be colonized and subjugated brutally by a foreign ruler.

What this guy says is much more sinister. He is implying that the only way for Indians to not make a mess of themselves is when they are governed by foreigners. He's calling us animals, @Sakal Gharelu Ustad do you not understand the undertone of his statement? It's not the same as Indians talking unfavorably about the misgovernance of post-independence India.

There is no civilization on earth that would not prefer the bad government of the good government of an alien power.

Explains why Mark said the comments were deeply upsetting. Indians can cause a deeply upsetting financial crisis for FB.

We all know about white man's burden. So, it can be due to deep seated bias.

Well, it cuts both ways. This decision has hurt Indian telcos equally.

Yes but is in line with what people want as far as I know. Indian telcos are doing well anyways, its the normal people we need to think about.

My reference was to the existing financial stability that Indian members offer to FB. They will lose billions if Indians quit FB and/or WhatsApp. They "need" to keep us happy.

There are two two types of Indians we have.

    One is,
    [IMG]
He came from west. Fully integrated into our life.

    Second is,
    Our beloved chacha.

These second type people learn few western ways and try to force them on poor Indians.
They don't even like Desi leaders.
Always nitpicking their brothers at home. pointing every little glitch and what not.

    Enough said.

By people you mean who vouch for net neutrality. Btw there is a big overlap between those who favour net neutrality and women in Shani temple!!! Pick your side.

Indian telcos are doing ok and would need big infrastructure investment to ramp up their 4g services. This is where fb could have helped.

I vouch for net neutrality. My understanding of fb internet is that you would have to pay only for those services/sites that you use. But the way they split those services would lead you to sign up for multiple plans as a normal person uses multiple services. This would end up making him pay more as compared to your present internet service.

As far as 4G services are concerned, Airtel has already launched. Indian government has also increased FDI to 100% in that sector. This will bring in the required investments from abroad as well. Of course 100% FDI has a flipside for Indian companies.

Ex 1. Choice between buying bottle of shampoo vs small sachet. The latter was done in India and a lot of poor can use it, while they would have never bought the bottle.

Ex 2. Business class vs economy class tickets. You can choose one that you like.

Ex 3. 4-seater vs 6-seater car. Should everyone be forced to buy 6 seater?

Ex 4. All books do not sell at same price.

    Etc etc.

Options are good and price discrimination allows you to buy the service you want. Fb offered a limited service for free. If I only want to use fb on my mobile even as a rich person, why should I pay 1000Rs? This becomes even more useful for poor people, who would never use data pack because of price.
