Explosion at Brussels train station: One suspect reportedly shot

June 21, 20179:37am

AN explosion has rocked Brussels Central Station after a suspected suicide bomber detonated a bomb belt, sending terrified passengers fleeing.

Belgian troops patrolling the station swooped in to “neutralise” the man, who was threatening civilians and wearing an “explosive belt”.

Het Laatste Nieuws, a local tabloid, reported witnesses saying a man shouted “Allahu Akbar” before the small blast after 9pm Tuesday (5am Wednesday AEST).

Soldiers ran toward the spot, saw wires protruding from the man’s clothes, and shot him “several times” after he appeared to “trigger a device”, according to the report.

The suspect was said to be wearing a rucksack packed with explosives at Belgium’s busiest railway station.

Police sources said the attacker was seriously injured in the blast and subsequently died from his wounds.

Police tweeted to say the “incident involving an individual” was under control and there were no other casualties.

Belgian prosecutors are treating this as a terror incident.

“This is considered as a terrorist attack,” federal prosecutor’s office spokesman Eric Van Der Sypt told a news conference outside Brussels Gare Centrale station.

“The suspect has been neutralised by the military that were present at the scene immediately after the explosion.”

Van Der Sypt said there were “no other victims.”

He added: “We have no idea of his identity for the time being.”

Twitter user Rémy Bonnaffé shared a picture, purportedly taken inside the station, at the time of the explosion.

“Two loud detonations in Brussels Central. For my nose. Then quick popping after each other,” he wrote.

A bomb squad performed a controlled explosion of a bomb belt the suspect had at the Central Station, Belgian broadcaster VTM television reported. Authorities set up a wide perimeter around the station, located near the city’s famed Grand Place square.

Witness Ludoivic Hampton said something that sounded like a “bomb” went off just 30 metres away from him.

“When you’re walking through central station and something that looked and sounded like a bomb goes off 30 metres away from you. I’m lucky to be alive,” he said.

Arash Aazami arrived at the station just after the explosion.

Nicolas Van Herreweghen, who works for Belgium’s national rail company, said the male suspect was very agitated, yelling about jihadists and then “Allahu akbar,” Arabic for “God is great,” before blowing up something on a baggage trolley.

He said the man appeared to be 30 to 35 years of age.

“As we entered into the station, we were evacuated loudly by some security personnel,” he told the BBC.

“Looked around, saw people running in the streets, trying to seek refuge and decided to do the same ourselves.”

The government agency that owns Belgium’s railways was warned by a train driver who saw people running across the rail lines inside the station, spokesman Arnaud Reymann told broadcaster RTL.

“I went down to the mezzanine level, someone was shouting. Then he cried ‘Allahu Akbar’, and he blew up a wheeled suitcase,” Nicolas Van Herringer, a railway sorting agent, told reporters.

“I was behind a wall when it exploded.

“I went down and alerted my colleagues to evacuate everyone. He (the suspect) was still around but after that we didn’t see him.”

Van Herrewegen added: “It wasn’t exactly a big explosion but the impact was pretty big. People were running away.”

Suspect fatally shot in Brussels Central Station terror attack
By Emanuella Grinberg and Nancy Coleman, CNN

Updated 2252 GMT (0652 HKT) June 20, 2017

(CNN)A suspect was fatally shot at Brussels Central Station Tuesday after a failed bombing that Belgian authorities are calling a terrorist attack.

A "small explosion" went off in the transportation hub around 8:30 p.m., Belgium Prosecutor's Office spokesman Eric Van Der Sypt said in a news conference Tuesday.
"The suspect was neutralized by soldiers," Van Der Sypt said. He later confirmed the suspect was dead but declined to identify him or say if he was known to authorities.
No civilians were injured in the attack, which set off panic as people ran for cover.
The Belgian Foreign Ministry said there is no indication of other incidents but the threat level remains at 3, which warns of a "possible and likely threat."
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel thanked security services and Belgian Rail for their courage and professionalism, which helped contain the situation within an hour. The National Security Council will meet Wednesday morning to address the incident.

The station was evacuated and closed along with two other stations in the Belgian capital. Armed patrols, including two bomb disposal units, surrounded the station.
A witness who was inside the station during the incident said he heard two explosions and then heard someone yell "Allahu Akbar" twice followed by heavy gunfire.
Sandor Moors said he as waiting on the train platform downstairs when he heard one bang followed by another and then the cries.
"There was a security announcement to leave the station. Military came down with heavy guns looking for someone."
After the gunfire he went upstairs looking for an escape. As he passed through what appeared to be gun smoke he said he saw a man with three bullet wounds.
"I don't know if he survived. He looked dead," Moors said.

Remy Bonnaffe said he was inside the station when an explosion went off, followed by a fire.
"The bang was very loud, it was like a very big firework that just went up in front of my nose," he said.
"The fire was very small. It was a very small explosion but a very loud bang."

Arash Aazami was walking into the train station when he saw people running out of the building. A restaurant next door let him and others inside as police secured the station.
"There's a lot of military here, but the situation seems to be contained," Aazami said. "There's no sign of panic."
The incident comes more than a year after suicide bombers in Brussels detonated several explosions in the Brussels Airport and a nearby Metro station. The attack killed 31 people and wounded hundreds.
CNN's Samantha Beech, Paul Cruickshank, Natalie Gallón, Julia Jones, Paul P. Murphy, Sebastian Shukla, and Donie O'Sullivan contributed to this report.

Move along people, nothing to see here.

Just part and parcel of living in big cities.
Law and order problem .
It's just some misguided youth of a poor headmaster or failed in love.

EU have become habitual to these terrorist attacks now and their reaction is to distribute flowers or make tattos while Pakis breed/rape their teen white females in thousands.

They have given up... that Theresa May may again give some "Kadi Ninda" in her low neck cut dress showing boobies and the Muslim London Mayor would say it's normal in big cities.
