What is our end game for the region? An obedient but united Pakistan or a bunch of smaller countries?

Cutting off contact won't solve the problem.

    Smaller countries.

Baluchistan, Sindhe as Independent country. Both will be Pro-India.
We should raise POK in aggressive way and prepare to hit them at their weakest point in future.
Support to A'than by Men, Money and Material to raise Durand Line.
Pak will become = Punjab and then their economy, diplomacy will be so weak, They can't even stand as "threat"

By this way, Possible threat from Bangladesh will also vanish. China-Pak relation will go below carpet due to no direct link via Kashmir. Threat of China will also reduce.

Weak and Unstable Pakistan is in India's favor!!

We cannot expect an "obedient" Pak, we sure can expect bits and pieces of Pakistan which will serve our interests.

No guarantee that those pieces will serve our interest.

Let's have a dedicated thread on the endgame for Pakistan

    Addendum:

Smaller countries means more chaos. India isn't the only player in that region, we have Iran, Arabia, China and USA.

It can become a massive shitstorm, with some pieces becoming loyal to Iran (Sindh ?), some to USA (Balochistan?) some to China (Punjab?),

Khyber Pakthunkwa may merge with Afghanistan though

Let's see, Baloch are not against us. Sindh is not. We have to take care of the Mohajirs though. Pashtuns can be occupied with their own issues. We will be left with just PakJab. Smaller area and landlocked.

Bharat Karand who is usually quite Hawkish argues that a united Pakistan is in India's interest

According to him, Pakistan acts like a buffer for Islamic extremism emanating from Arabia and Iran

Does not matter as long as we have less to worry about on our western borders.
Balochistan will not become a stooge of te US. They are fiercely independent minded. Sindhis are business minded and will see money in India and be on our side. Mohajirs there are an issue.

We saved Bangladeshis from genocide, are we best buddies ? As I said again, smaller pieces will enable easier manipulation by external powers. Baloch may not be against us initially, but after some good ol' Wahabi funding, situation might change.

Actually Iran does not propagate extremism. Their "extremism" is to keep the rule on their country and to keep themselves relevant. We don't see them funneling money like the Saudi Wahabis. Iran has only been made a villain by the west to suit its interest as far as terrorism goes.

From the little that I have learnt about the Baloch, they come across as secular, live and let live kinds.

Actually, You have a valid point. Small countries are no guarantee that they will help India. Example: Bangladesh, Today it might be neutral but that is more to do with their small economy, Land lock/unfavorable geography, Weak defense capability. But sooner or Later, They might become official enemy of India. they are already in process.

    But see in different way,

Till Late 70's, India had big threat of Pakistan. Enemy on both sides. But now, Only threat on west side. Bangladesh may or may not be friend of India, But they lack the power to go against India. 2 Smaller countries are less danger compare with 1 Big Enemy.

In same way, Sindh, Baluchistan will have bad relation with Punjab=Pakistan. At least for next few decades which will help us to move upward more and more. Their defense capability, Economy, Diplomacy will be divided and they will be no threat.

The end game will come in Pakistan when Pakistan gets too close to the Chinese and USA
decides they are of no use anymore.

In 1970, Bangladesh (East Pakistan) was threat. Today, They don't have any significant capability. Let us assume, They improve their capability in a decade or two. It will be too small to be considered as "Threat". Bangladesh will always be fearful and can never go against India. Imagine, 1 Corp + BSF is more than enough to face whole Bangladesh.

My point is, New country always have weak defense. It takes many decades to improve their economy, defense and diplomacy and that is more true when it came from failed nation like Pakistan. We will get at least 3-5 decades of peace and in that time, India would be in different league. In Top 3-4 nations of the world!!

No extremism, but expansionism. Iran will try to spread it's version of Islam to Persianize the population. Persianized population means strategic depth for Iran, not India

You can make an analogy of smaller countries to wild dogs alone you can neutralize them
but a pack of wild dogs becomes a little harder (sri lanka,bangladesh,pak...)

But we are not sworn in enemies as well ? Are we ?

Do you realise the gravity of the situation if bangladesh was still a east pakistan ? We would have to be dividing our resources to defend the border at both east and west pakistan. Today we are just patrolling the bangladeshi border from stupid tresspassers, not that we have to worry that they are going to run into our territory with tanks and planes. Not to mention the convenience china would had gotten with pakistan also being on the eastern side of india. A perfect string of pearl.

Pakistan in bits and pieces will be much more usefull for india. Let the balochistan be the stooge of US or iran, who cares ? We are not hostile with anyone of either, rather we are friends for a time being as our policies co-incide with US and iran both. Besides, being the neighbours we have every chance of having good relation with balochistan.

Yes, true. But SL and Bangladesh can never go against India. It would be matter of survival for them. They can hate India as much as they want, But they are no fools that they will try any misadventure against us. Our 1/10th of defense capability is more than enough for them. If these countries help our enemies like China/Pak, They will become 1st target in case of war and they know very well. China/Pak won't come in rescue when needed due to geography.

I am yet to see them do that. They have their claims on parts of Balochistan but that's based on their alleged historic claims and not to propagate their version of Islam.
