Is there a link between the high proportion of vegetarianism in Gujarat and the poor level of nutrition reported. NE states and WB while having a lower per capita income are mainly non vetarian report less malnutrition. Read on.

@ OP - Paneer, Soyabean, Rajma to name just a few are protein rich veg food items. I don't think malnutrition has anything to do with being veg or non-veg. However, if a poor family is consuming rice and dal everyday, it would led to malnutrition. A healthy dies should include proteins, carbs, veggies and fruits.

Now comes localization of food. NE, Kolkata are places where the staple food is rice & meat/fish. Even poor people eat fish twice a week, considering there are varaities of fishes available at Rs. 50/kg. At other times veggies and rice, Musur dal is consumed. This is the food habit. Note that Musur dal is very high on proteins, which falls into non-veg category for veg people who don't eat it. Musur dal is often referred to as poor man's protein. Maybe this is one reason. I feel I'm forgetting something.

The article mentions Punjab also has high percentage of vegetarians but they do consume large ammount of dairy products. Gujarati diet seems to be more dal based.

It's about cultural food. You should be in Gujarat and know about its food.Especially the daily basis. Paneer, rajma and other rich sources are not in the menu.Still food is healthy except the iron content so anemia is inevitable but what Modi has said is actually right. Girls here and I guess everywhere wants to remain very slim plus if you see genetically, unlike haryana, punjab gujjus aren't that giants. So, this cry is just nothing but a political gimmik.

    Okay.

But malnutrition is in every state, and it affects mostly the poor. Nothing to do with being veg or non-veg.

What is a regular Gujarati diet for both rich and poor people? Say for example, lunch.

IMO diet of most N Indians apart from Punjabis and Haryanvis is not so healthy. They eat lot of fried and sugary stuff and are mostly vegetarians. S Indians apart frm Brahmins are mostly non-vegetarians, plus they do not start their day with hot jalebis like some in North (similarly in East and NE India) ! Punjab and Haryana despite having vegetarians have lot of dairy and stuff like rajma, chole, etc. Perhaps VIP can elaborate on Guj diet.
