Mrs Gandhi increased socialist economic controls started by her father Jawaharlal Nehru, opened the doors to widespread corruption that leading politicians and bureaucrats now routinely practice day by day by, and sowed the seeds for both her own death and that of her son, Rajiv Gandhi, by encouraging a militant Sikh leader in Punjab and separatist Tamil activity in Sri Lanka. She also increased separatist sentiments in Kashmir.

If Nehru was greater than his deeds, as many people say, Indira was not as great as she should have been, and her deeds were more damaging than she probably intended.

Nehru's controversial post-independence policies of economic centralism and peaceful relations with China are now generally regarded as well-meaning but misguided

Damning PVNR to wash of the sins of gandhi family. What india's policy is today it all was the recalibration and the re-orientation of the PVNR's govt. in the wake of collapse USSR and the 40 years of licence raj and socialistic economic policies broke india to the verge of bankruptcy.Though it was finance ministers Dr. manmohan sing's policies to abolish licence raj but you have to take into account that without proper leadership backing manmohan singh in PMO it would have been difficult to implement those revolutionary idia's in the socialist india of 1990s.Second sea change PVNR did was the reorientation of india -israel relations after being snubbed by OIC on kashmir.Indian relationship with Israel were frost till 1990.Another masterstroke of PVNR was his policies on J&K when he intrroduced amendment in parliament to declare whole state of J&K(including POK and askai chin) as indian territory which now i coming in way of PM Manmohan sing's way that he can barter away kashmir without abolishing the amendment passed during PVNR's time, bypassing parliament.PVNR was on verge of conducting Nuke test when USA somehow sniffed about it and bought pressure on PVNR and he wilted to abort test,THe test VAjpayee govt. did infact were those device which were left in the shaft during PVNR's time and vajpayee did acknowledge PVNR's role in 1998 tests. Congress of Nehru-Gandhi always opposed the formation of israel and they were on forefront of Palestinian cause. But PVNR changed this policy too hence today after 19 years indian defence forces are reaping huge in terms of israeli tech in defence and space.PVNR is not only the first congress leader or PM who got raw deal from crongress. If you look around toady's indai you will find names of indira, rajiv, nehru sometimes ghandhi but no LB shastri Jagjeevan ram PVNR and other congress stalwarts on congress banners or congress launching naming any govt scheme or erecting statues at city squares.

Vir Sangvi does a fair assessment though I wont subscribe to his theories of PV's name being used to undermine the Gandhi family, or their legacy, whatever that is supposed to mean, or bjp being behind it, or where he says Gandhi family has not made sure of not letting non-gandhi names have a resonance, heck they have so conveniently forgotten lal bhadur shashtri who was painted as the villain immediately post 65 war and MMS finds his place as a PM because he is a yes man to the high command with no bone which can dare contradict, with sonia a name which remains unacceptable as a PM to the country and rahul is not yet seen temperamentally qualified enough to take to the role of the PM and even he admits he finds it unexplainable and so he is just trying to coin a thought he has no clues about. In Pakistan they term it as conspiracy theories!

India was in dire straits back in 1991 when pv took to the role of the PM, and without a doubt with moscow being in its own mess post the break up of ussr and boris yeltsen taking a pro US stance, the only other possible hope which could have bailed India out, India then had no option but to look at imf which eventually happened but something that does not get highlighted because MMS has been portrayed as the real architect, the genius behind the reform process who since then is followed as some sort of a cult figure. It was by sheer luck and purely by accident the economic reform process was taken up which then was severely opposed and criticized both with in the congress and out side by the commies and the bjp who labeled the act as a sell out of the country and a new form of colonialism taking shape.

I think to do justice to this discussion we need to look a little back to an era post indira when rajiv became the PM who was the first person to have really looked at the option of economic reforms and he did promise a lot when for the first time he talked about making India a scientific hub, the time when a real change in outlook towards economy started happening, though rhetorical in nature, but he was atleast talking about it before the bofors scandal came to haunt him and his regime which eventually rocked the whole process.

PS: Truthful, please don't just give a link to an article, if you could post the relevant part of the article pertaining to the discussion on the thread would be great. Thanks.

Mrs Gandhi never encouraged Sikh or Kashmir saparatists, but she sure has created LTTE which killed her son.
