US Navy's E-2C Hawkeye. Radome in the middle and 4 vertical tail-fins.

A model of AWACS based on A330 From DRDO

Where is this taken from?

On topic, I do not think this is a conclusive design of any kind. It just seems a 3D model prepared hastily for representative purposes. An actual live model of A330 AEW platform was shown previously - the system is most likely to end up like that.

I found it weird too. May be its due to do with airflow over rudder. This may not be the final config
Not all AWACS control aircraft have a huge radome on top of the fuselage. For example, the Chilean EB-707 'Condor' (pic below) has the radars mounted on the sides and front.
However, a radome on top of the fuselage (like EA-3 sentry), high enough to avoid masking effects of the wing etc. is the best option, as the range is the same in all directions and it gives 360° with a single rotating radar, inside the dome "Mechanically Scanned Array" (MSA). This configuaration was used in the beginning, as it was the only option. Even now it is used with modern AESA. But a circular radome housing 3 AESA/ PESA radars covering 120° each is also used.

That's actually the EL/M-2075 Phalcon radar. Israeli AF used a similar setup previously (though not with such prominent side arrays).

This system has been replaced however, with the newer EL/W-2085 CAEW (Conformal AEW) that comes mounted on Gulfstream G550 aircraft. This version is in service with Israel, Singapore and Italy.

Only India uses the Phalcon as a dome radar mounted on the top of fuselage. No other country.

Sajeev, check the size of the radome.

If the radome is that large, it will have to be placed midway so as to minimally affect the Cg.

If the image is correct, then it shows a very powerful system with a clear intent to detect LO/VLO targets at reasonable ranges.

The support pylons are also pretty large. While they could merely be sized corresponding to the radome, there is a chance they incorporate side looking modules as well of a different band.

DRDO RFIs a year or two back mentioned both L and S band AESA modules, and they were from CABS.

L Band would be useful for detecting X-band optimized fighters at range, while S-Band would provide precision tracking.

Our Phalcon is L Band. Our DRDO AEW&C are S Band.
Interestingly for the BMD program our LRTR is L and MFCR is S Band.

With Embarrer jet deal in a scandal, I think there will be a scandal in every arms deal. Its high time we think of a JV for a medium to heavy lifter aircarft which can be used for domestic transport as well as a military grade one, which should be able to perform the role of refueller, used as a platform for AWACS, etc..

I found only this update :-

March 29, 2015

NEW DELHI: The government on Saturday cleared the DRDO project to build advanced "eyes in the sky" or next-generation AWACS (airborne warning and control systems), which can detect incoming aerial threats like hostile fighters, drones and cruise missiles from 400-km away.

The Manohar Parrikar-led defence acquisitions council (DAC) approved the building of two Awacs, which will involve mounting indigenous 360-degree coverage AESA (active electronically scanned array) radars on Airbus A-330 wide-body jets, at a cost of Rs 5,113 crore...

Airborne Warning and Control System

There has been no delay in AWACS(I) Project as the current mandate of the Project was to finalise on the contract of the aircraft through a global tendering process, which has been completed.

There has been delay in AWE&C Programme due to various reasons some of which are, finalization of Operational Requirements, delay in delivery of certified aircraft, incompletion of flight evaluation of the integrated systems due to reasons of modification on aircraft by Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), major maintenance and system complexities, etc.

The first AEW&C is likely to be inducted in Dec 2016 and indigenous AWACS (I) System is likely to be available from 2024.

This information was given by Minister of State for Defence Dr. Subhash Bhamre in a written reply to Shri Devji M Patel in Lok Sabha today.
