Story of self-reliance

Saraswat attributes this confidence to the "pointed approach" and "professionalism" practised in the last 25 years by missile technologists, hardware and software engineers, and technicians of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It was no surprise, he said, that it was "a copybook flight".

Saraswat, who is also Director General, DRDO, was proud that "the indigenous content in this missile was higher than 80 per cent" because of the DRDO's decision to join hands with industry and academic institutions. As many as 300 industries across India manufactured various components and subsystems for the missile, he said.
This "symbolises a major, massive jump in the technologies and the capability" of the DRDO because "once you have a range of 5,000 km, the same missile [Agni-V] can go to a height of 2,500 km with a short range and you can hit any object and satellite at that height. The same modules can put small satellites in orbit and multiple warheads," Chander said.
Missile development in India is a saga of self-reliance and sustained struggle, with the pioneers learning by reverse engineering and battling technology denial regimes such as the Missile Technology Control Regime ("Missile shield", Frontline, February 13, 2009).

The MTCR, with the United States at its head, targeted India after the successful tests of the Prithvi missile in February 1988 and the Agni in May 1989. Supply of computer processor chips, radio frequency devices, electro-hydraulic components, maraging steel, magnesium alloy, gyroscopes, accelerometers, carbon fibre, glass fibre and, so on, was stopped to India.

Undaunted, the DRDO collaborated with public and private sector industries and academic institutions and developed maraging steel for rocket motors, carbon-carbon composites and resins for the re-entry vehicle of the Agni missiles, magnesium alloy, phase shifters for Rajendra radar for Akash missile, winding machines, and so on. The public sector undertaking, Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MIDHANI), the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory (DMRL), and private industries together developed the magnesium alloy which was denied to India by Germany. When the first plate of magnesium alloy rolled out of MIDHANI, Germany said it would give India any amount of magnesium alloy. The DRDO wrote back saying it was prepared to export the alloy to Germany ( Frontline, February 13, 2009). " :hail::thumb:The DRDO always converted challenges into opportunities," said Chander.

DRDO yet to develop foolproof cyber defence programme
Published: Friday, May 4, 2012, 9:15 IST
By DNA Correspondent | Place: Bangalore | Agency: DNA

Despite the increasing threat posed by those who commit cyber crimes to national security, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), which is responsible for developing technology for use by the military, is yet to develop a foolproof cyber defence programme to protect and secure network systems in the country, according to DRDO director KD Nayak.

Speaking at the two-day international cyber security summit in Bangalore, Nayak said DRDO is still working on a cyber defence programme primarily to protect key sectors such as defence, railways and power.

The technologies used to commit cyber crimes have grown to such a level that even an attack similar to that of 9/11 can be executed by sitting in a remote corner and hacking the air traffic control system, he said, adding that DRDO is working on a project to protect cyber network in the country from malware and hackers... full article DRDO yet to develop foolproof cyber defence programme - India - DNA

I was hearing Mr Gill (ex Sports Minister) on the Defence Debate on one of the Parliament TV Network

He gave a informed speech on Procurement and the Problems.

He was scathing on the DRDO and PSU.

He spoke about the LCA and the Arjun and some other equipment and said that it was in this college days it started and he heart was filled with pride and till today, it is still in the development stage. I am not too sure of which quipment he was speaking when he made this remark.

And he joined the Manmohan Brigade to demilitarise Siachen.

The Govt is going in a big way to get public opinion to sway in favour of demilitarisation.

Another Himalayan Blunder in the making.

Indian Missiles: Development is at alarming rate: Western Defence Expert
Published May 7, 2012 | By admin
SOURCE: IDRW NEWS NETWORK

Agni-V might have made world sit and notice rise of India in missiles development and technologies, but it has also highlighted India's Self reliance in its Missile development know how of the technologies involved in its development.

Markoff a Western Defence Expert told idrw.org that pace of Indian Missile development is quite alarming; in just over two decades India has mastered almost all different types of missiles which world has produced over 50 years after World War II.

India currently is having most active missile development and their R&D is covering all aspect of missiles, from Missile defence system to Cruise missiles of sub and Supersonic class, along with Land and Submarine launched near Inter- continental missiles to strategic class of missiles.

India by forming joint ventures in some missile development with European and Russia has also made sure that due to lack of in house talent some other crucial projects are not in back burner.

Markoff did pointed out that India currently is serious lacking in development of aerial missiles in class of AAM (Air to Air Missiles) and ASM (Air to surface missiles) and with lack of proposed future development in this class of missiles will hurt future fighter aircrafts which India is keen to develop locally. (Referring to Tejas MK-2, AMCA)

Andrew Markoff is a visiting fellow at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies in at Columbia University, New York.

Not a good thing..

At least from Indian side, Over those places no helicopter can work for more than few mins, there are no other way of re supply mounting a assault there against a well dug in position is not possible, Once the tops in hands of PA there will be a link between PLA once both PA & PLA capture the post there, Indian army will have no way of stopping PLA supplies and links to PA in Occupied Kashmir..

If there is a offence, both side would involve directly or indirectly, Bleeding IA as much as they can do, If IA retreats more, Consider PA /PLA will reach Srinagar..

Indian DPSUs Increase Exports to the US, Europe and Asia

The Minister of State for Defence M.M.Pallam Raju has stated in the Parliament that since 2009-2010, the Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) have exported products worth nearly $ 4.03 billion (Rs 1,815 crore) to over 50 countries including the US, UK, China, and Israel amongst others. The Minister has stated that the state-run Defence units are continually progressing in terms of exports.

Minister of State (Defence) M.M.Pallam Raju has tabled a report in the Parliament which describes the value of material exported by nine the DPSUs to a total of 53 countries. The total export value generated by the DPSUs stood at Rs 1,81,487 lakh.

While Defence products from the Indian DPSUs were exported to major countries like UK, Canada, China, Israel, Germany and France, the countries from the sub-continent like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal and Sri Lanka also got a share of Indian Defence products. The largest chunk of the export was done by the state-run Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) which sold material worth Rs 78,306 lakh.

The Minister of State Pallam Raju also added that in order to supplement the existing guidelines of the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), the government has issued additional guidelines on detailed procedures for establishing joint ventures with private sector firms by the DPSUs in February this year. Security concerns were taken into consideration before allowing such JVs. The guidelines provide that DPSUs should sign a suitable Non-Disclosure Agreement with prospective partner(s) before sharing any confidential information.

Only last month, the Indian DPSUs were dictated by Defence Minister AK Antony to keep their engagements with their clients and stake-holders clear of any dubious transactions. In fact, a meeting with the eight chiefs of DPSUs to review their performance and functioning at the Defence ministry also took place to assess their projects and growth.

India has been aiming at self-reliance in the Defence sector for a long time and the ushering of the new Defence production policy in January 2011 has been a step in that direction. In order to produce advanced Defence products, the procurement policy allows means such as formation of consortia, joint ventures and public-private partnerships within the Government-approved framework.

The government rewards failure. That's why DRDO is so pathetic

Here is an insider's view
1)The system punishes those that achieve the most with the least and rewards those that achieve the least with the most money

2)Lack of application of mind, when conceiving a program. So 90% of all sub tasks are hair-brained

3)The review mechanism is just an old boys club and every project is deemed a success. Yet DRDO doesn't perform--curious

In fact if you finish a program in 2 weeks and return 2 crores to the govt, you will be deemed a failure and you won't get funding.
But if you drag it on for 2 years, blow up 2 crores and cook up a fudged report, you will be deemed a success.

I will reiterate here, as I have mentioned in several other threads: the problem with Indian defence agencies is that they are sarkari babudom infested places.

I'm not saying that we should do away with them, but the defence sector badly needs private participation. The DRDOs and HALs can coexist along with the Mahindras and Tatas and L&Ts. Hopefully, DRDO will also come up to speed after being exposed to competition, just like SBI came up to speed after being exposed to ICICI and Citibank and HSBC etc.

Until that happens, kids who make virtual robotic controlled arms will continue to move to the US.

/\/\/\ These babus eat up 100s of millions every year due to corruption. Until and unless DRDO restructures it's payscale with leading IT paymasters, nothings gonna happen. Nobody works for peanuts, no more.

Re: Main Battle Tanks and Armour Technology

I'am also a patriot, and I also criticize our own developments or say truth about them. Being patriot does not mean that we need to defend everything that is made in our countries.
In India, a person who can criticize DRDO products is not a patriot. We become "self flagellating gentlemen."

You western fellows have some strange values.:troll:

Kunal sir has seen the tank personally and thoroughly and would have even chatted with the DRDO chaps at the expo, hence it would be very difficult to believe the flaw in the tank as pointed out....

1) Without critical point of view, further development and improvement is immposible, only stagnation.
Logic and critical thinking are unacceptable. :rage:

Anyway, let's not digress more than we already have. :)
