NASHIK: Intensifying its demand for Bal Thackeray's memorial at Shivaji Park in Mumbai, Shiv Sena today said the party would not budge from its stand irrespective of legal implications.

"We don't care if any law is coming in the way to raise Balasaheb's memorial at Shivaji Park," said senior party leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Manohar Joshi.

He was speaking to reporters here after attending a condolence meeting at Kalidas auditorium here.

Joshi was the first leader to raise the demand for late Thackeray's memorial at Shivaji Park ground where the Shiv Sena supremo used to address party rallies.

Joshi was referring to Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan's statement that the state government would not do anything in violation of the law with regard to Shiv Sena's demand to set up the memorial.

"Nothing will be done which will violate the law," Chavan had said, adding he has not received any proposal for a memorial for the late leader so far.

Cremation site of Bal Thackeray similar to Ayodhya, Shiv Sena says

MUMBAI: Shiv Sena today said the place where Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's last rites were conducted was similar to Ayodhya.

"The place where Balasaheb's last rites were conducted at the Shivaji Park is similar to Ayodhya. The sanctity of the place should be maintained. It is like a temple for us and we won't remove the structure that has come up at the cremation site," Sanjy Raut told reporters here.

He also asked the government and court not to intervene in the issue. "The government and court should not come in between," he added.

"Its sanctity is similar to Ayodhya. We are not calling it a memorial. But we want the memorial at the Shivaji Park," Raut said.

Senior party leader Manohar Joshi first made the demand for the memorial of Bal Thackeray at Shivaji Park, soon after Thackeray was cremated.

The Sena patriarch died on 17th of this month at his 'Matoshree' residence.

Why build the memorial on govt land? Build it somewhere else. Keep our Shivaji park as it is. I do not agree with Joshi. And neither does Raj Thackrey. And now Raj matters.

Pathetic. This is worse than the Ambedkaris demanding Dadar stn. be renamed as Chaithyabhumi station.

Can't believe Manohar Joshi is making such statements too. When he was mayor in 76, my Uncle used to skinny dip in his pool!
