NEW DELHI: Raking up the Ram temple issue, BJP leader LK Advani on Saturday asked partymen not to be apologetic for the Ayodhya movement and instead take pride in it.

Advani also referred to Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's recent words of praise for him, which had surprised many, and said that people should not hesitate to speak the "right thing" as "the world will accept it".

"When people believe and talk of our Ayodhya issue and agitate over it, you should not be apologetic over it, ever. You should take pride in it," Advani told partymen.

In his speech at the BJP headquarters on the party's foundation day here, Advani said he felt pride in admitting that his party raised the issue of Ram temple and Ayodhya as it was not just a political movement but also a cultural one.

"People say that BJP and Bharatiya Jana Sangh achieved this position by raising issues like Ayodhya and Ram temple. I feel proud in admitting this and say that ours is not just a political movement but also a cultural movement," he said.

Referring to the SP chief, he said, "Recently, when people heard Mulayam Singh ji praising me, they thought what is he saying and doing? I feel if you speak the right thing, the world will accept it. You should not hesitate. Don't ever let that inferiority complex come inside you."

The Samajwadi Party supremo, when asked about his praise of Advani, had said that those leaders who had done good or are doing so should be appreciated. His comments have sparked speculation of the two parties cosying up in the run up to general elections next year.

Advani said he has no objection to those who believe that BJP gained support by raising the Ayodhya and Ram temple issue alone, but added that he could not complete the Ayodhya Yatra as he was arrested before reaching Ayodhya.

Babri masjid demolition saddest day in life: LK Advani

Mumbai, Mar 29: Speaking at the 'Face the Press" programme organised by Press Club of Mumbai, Bharatiya Janatha Party (BJP) leader LK Advani said that the riots happened in the country can't be justified, but he ruled out the idea of apologizing for the 2002 Gujarat riots.
"You are talking of regret and apologies. I understand there have been many riots in Hindustan. It is very often that handling of a situation...is lack of governance. The issue of an apology does not arise. But it is sure that riots are a sad issue, Advani said.
Talking about Babri Masjid demolition, Advani said that it was the saddest day of life. He said, "I have maintained that it was the saddest day of my life. The organisation which had planned the movement should have anticipated the people's impatience. Everyone was shocked after what happened."
Advani cleared his stance on Pakistan by saying that, India should not indulge in any formal talks till the neighboring country stops cross-border terrorism.
"I welcome the invite extended to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yusuf Raza Gilani to watch the cricket match. We think that there should be as much as contact between people to people. However, we are firm in our stand that there should be no former dialogue (with Pakistan) till there is zero terrorism."

Advani has to realize he has ZERO chance of being PM now. Why ruin it for better younger leaders?

Is there a power struggle between Advani Camp and Modi Camp ?

Modi has cultivated an image of development, and he has tried his best to exorcise the ghost of Godhra. Esp in the last two years he has made no bones of his national ambitions

There does seem to be a polarization within BJP... A secular development based camp and a communal hinduvta based camp.

It makes sense for them to use both the issues..to attract the core Hindutva voters using dumb people like Advani, who can only appeal to right wing people.

Modi on the other hand will use development credentials to get votes from middle class and youth. The usual middle class does not abhor BJP because of its Hindutva agenda, and so these two issues do not really overlap. Due to non-overlapping nature of these two vote banks, this gamble can actually pay off.
