This is the unfortunate part of the whole article.

Indeed, soldiers who join the army, are aware of the dangers of their tasks. Yes, death is the unfortunate but an inevitable byproduct of war?

Why does India's volunteer army require a national commemoration?

The answer is simple. The nation requires people who will risk their lives, the happiness of their families. a constantly disturbed family life with posting to areas where existence, even without war, is sometime beyond human tolerance and far from the comforts of civilisation and family and at risk to their normal health that they would have had, had they been in normal surroundings, where fire fighters, police, private investigators exist even when faced with the rare danger that this rather unfortunate columnist highlights.

Therefore, there is a requirement to acknowledge that soldiers live unnatural lives even in natural times and when they die for the Nation in COMBAT (and not in other times). the nation acknowledges their contribution.

The unfortunate, confused columnist, knowing this fully well, seems to have steered clear of the embracing the soldier life and instead cared for a life of comfort, and cocktails and dinner by sponsors with an agenda, and hence pens articles that are totally stupid. In fact, the next war, he should be taken and thrown over the LC since his life would not be worth protecting as he is already a sold commodity.

    An immensely idiotic statement.

Of course there are Memorials at the Regiment expense in the Regimental Centre.

But the National Memorial is for the Nation and not merely to massage the ego of any soldier. It is to inspire the youth to savour their freedom that these soldiers ensured by their death. As also, to inspire them to join in the cause to give up a normal and comfortable life's existence and embrace the hardship and death in service of the Nation.

If soldiering were to be just another job or less taxing in human comforts as in the other jobs mentioned by the columnist, then none would join the Military and instead take the jobs of a fire fighters, police, private investigators, or politicians who die while serving the country or engineers who are killed for exposing fraud and graft.

Though this is the first time I learnt that politicians have been killed dying for exposing fraud!

Fire fighters, police, private investigators, politicians or engineers do not sign up to die an unnatural death. If death comes, it is by accident.

That is where lies the difference.

Why not an old refurbished war memorial ?

Because, the one at India Gate is not of an Independent nation.
Also now the masters are not " firangis"
A name cast in stone on a National memorial is worth more than the " Audis/ Ferraris/ BMW's or Penthouses a man can buy.
Give it to us before our patience wears thin, ( then we will have it where we like!!) maybe in Parliament House Complex itself.

Yes it is high time to honour our fallen brave!
We do remember them everyday in our regimental officers messes, our QG's, our Office complexes
Now we want the thankless Politician to wake up and have a simple stone structure staring at him / her to understand what sacrifice, camaraderie, paltan, brotherhood, elan , ethos & honour really mean.

I am surprised that this 'moronic blabbering' that the ever patronising media calls article has credited this much discussion here or even worth a post here. Waste of precious bandwidth.

Anyway, the way that Moron Bhatia was received in the comments section of the article is worth a reading in itself.

Along with the war memorial I want government to come with a plan to help the families of the brave soldiers .
We need not only to remember those brave mens but we also have the duty to protect his family, educate his children and provide them a home.

Babus take thousands to start the pension for widows in this country so I must say we can do a lot from this memorial.

I agree with @pkroyal , the India Gate Memorial is one created under colonial rule, we need a new one for Indian Army.

More often than not one hears of horror story of widows and dependents of martyred soldiers left to fend for themselves, a War Memorial is a small tribute to those made the supreme sacrifice for the sake of country and the rest of the citizens.
