No hooliganism, learn from BJP, says Mulayam - Hindustan Times

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav is a bitter critic of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but that has not stopped him from advocating a positive he spotted in the behaviour of the Hindu nationalist party’s workers.

“BJP workers did not engage in any acts of hooliganism, so they won elections in many states (recent assembly polls),” he said on Monday, speaking on the occasion of the 111th birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh at the SP state headquarters.

He warned SP workers not to harm the party’s Lok Sabha election prospects with hooliganism.

The caution apparently came in reference with a recent incident in Jaunpur, where state cabinet minister Parasnath Yadav’s son Lucky Yadav allegedly misbehaved with some party workers.

The SP has given the Jaunpur Lok Sabha ticket to Parasnath, who replaced the party’s initial choice, KP Yadav. Lucky allegedly misbehaved with party workers who were supporters of KP Yadav.

Sharpening his warning, Mulayam said, “Just because someone’s father is a minister does not give one any kind of license to engage in hooliganism.

“Party workers indulge in such acts in many places and if any minister’s family member engages in such acts, the party’s collective image gets tarnished in public. If I hear of incidents of hooliganism, I will sack those involved from the party.”

He said the party would not tolerate acts of hooliganism. “When a party is in power, then words, language, behaviour and acts of the party people should be impressive.”

After the brief focus on learning from the behaviour of BJP workers, Mulayam quickly returned to attacking the saffron party.

He targeted the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate and Gujarat chief minister, Narendra Modi.

“How can the country elect a man who orchestrated massacre in Gujarat as prime minister? The country will not. Neither the BJP, nor the Congress will make the next government,” he said.

“The next government at the Centre will be of the third front, with the SP as its largest constituent and in a decision-making position.”
