India may get to host Fifa Club World Cup - The Times of India
NEW DELHI: Amidst the ISL fever prevalent among the country's football fans, an ambitious India are also eyeing to host the glamorous Fifa Club World Cup.

"We will decide in the Fifa Executive Committee meeting in December in Morocco for 2015-16, 2017-18 Club World Cup," said Fifa secretary general Jerome Valcke at a function held in the national capital on Wednesday.

With India set to host the U-17 World Cup in less than three years time, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is also gearing up to bid for hosting the prestigious U-20 World Cup.

"We will bid for U-20 World Cup. Initial steps have already been taken, besides we will also bid for 2017-18 Club World Cup," said an optimist AIFF president Praful Patel.

Lauding India's efforts in bringing football in the global map, Fifa secretary general expressed satisfaction over the progress made by India in their lead up to the U-17 World Cup slated to be held in 2017.

"I am not seriously concerned about the organisational progress in U-17 World Cup will be the cherry in the cake for the business partners," Valcke said.

However, Fifa also put forward a word of caution for the football fraternity that only a good show in the U-17 World Cup will ensure the 'sleeping giant' getting the coveted U-20 World Cup.

"If India succeeds with U-17 Football World Cup, then it can move for U-20 World Cup. Lot will also depend on the quality of U-17 football team," Fifa secretary general said.

Asked whether India will be granted special favour or not, Valcke stated that the entire thing will be depend upon India and how they strategise their bidding project.

"Fifa bidding process is an open system. India had won U-17 World Cup as it was the best project. India will also need a strong bid for Club World Cup and U-20 World Cup,' he said.

However, Valcke acknowledged the fact that winning bid for the U-20 World Cup will be a quite challenging one for India as it is much more professional event than the U-17 edition and noticed by the world as some of the brightest stars of football emerge out of the event.

Speaking about the size of the stadiums which will be hosting the U-17 World Cup, Valcke said ideally it should not be huge barring the one that will host the final as empty stadiums are bad for players and TV viewership.

"It would make sense that stadiums for U-17 World Cup should be about 20,000 to 30,000. But we are not pushing for huge stadium, we have never been. The final though can be staged in bigger stadium," he said.

The top footballing body of the country is also expecting the Government to lend a helping hands in building the infrastructure.

"We hope that the Government will respond. Infrastructure is a crucial issue," Patel said.

India win South Asian Women's Championship - FIFA.com
:first:
India have clinched their third South Asian Women's Football Championship, thrashing Nepal 6-0 in a one-sided final in Islamabad. Ngangom Bala Devi was the star of the show, bagging four goals and running the Nepalese defence ragged. The win cements India's place as the dominant force in women's football in the region - they have won all three editions of the championship since it was launched in 2010. India and Pakistan are normally bitter rivals in sport, but Devi said support from the home crowd had inspired her. "I am feeling so good to score four goals today. I received so much love here in Pakistan that made me improve my performance," she told AFP after the match. It was the first high-profile regional women's sports event in Pakistan, but the home side made little impression on the tournament. Indian captain Oinam Bembem, who is retiring, voiced her jubilation at ending her career on such a high note. "I am very happy to lead my team to three-time title victories in the SAFF championship. I am more happy because I am retiring from the SAFF championship after this and I am leaving at a good point," she said. Bembem also praised Pakistan, saying they had put a good show despite their inexperience - though they went out in the first round.

Stephen Constantine Appointed Head Coach of Indian Football Team

Englishman Stephen Constantine was on Friday appointed head coach of Indian men's football team, paving the way for his return at the helm of affairs for the second time. Constantine, 52, who is also be the coach of the India Under-23 national team, is expected to take charge from the first week of next month. "All India Football Federation confirms the appointment of Mr. Stephen Constantine as the Head Coach of the Senior Men's National Team of India. Mr. Constantine will also be in charge of the India U-23 National Team," the AIFF said in a release. Constantine was India coach from 2002 till 2005, during which the national team won the LG Cup in Vietnam and finished runners-up in the Afro Asian Games. He was the head coach of the Rwanda national team before he was offered the India job. According to sources, Constantine will get significantly lower salary than what his predecessor Wim Koevermans was getting. Dutchman Koevermans reportedly got around USD 20,000 per month before he left the job recently after a just over two-year stint. The name of Constantine, who has coached the national teams of Nepal, Malawi and Sudan, besides Rwanda, was recently cleared by the AIFF Technical Committee headed by former captain Bhaichung Bhutia. He got the nod ahead of former New Zealand coach and India Super League franchise side NorthEast United FC coach Ricki Herbert mainly due to his earlier Indian experience. The Englishman guided the Africans to their highest-ever world ranking of 68 in last month's FIFA Rankings.
