Indeed I have seen etching of names on historical building and tourist sites, but I don't think it is cool. People do it while others are not seeing - and that is sneaky!
It also shows that quite a few illiterates and semi literates visit these site with no sense of history, culture or civic sense.
Could it be from the popular American culture expression that was current in WW II - Killroy was Here - which the GIs wrote on the wall like graffiti?When i was young, i attempted to do the same thing, thinking it was cool. It turns out that i am not alone, many Chinese had the similar experience. Sometimes i wonder where did we pick up this bad habit?
