When i was young, i attempted to do the same thing, thinking it was cool. It turns out that i am not alone, many Chinese had the similar experience. Sometimes i wonder where did we pick up this bad habit?

Could it be from the popular American culture expression that was current in WW II - Killroy was Here - which the GIs wrote on the wall like graffiti?

Indeed I have seen etching of names on historical building and tourist sites, but I don't think it is cool. People do it while others are not seeing - and that is sneaky!

It also shows that quite a few illiterates and semi literates visit these site with no sense of history, culture or civic sense.
