Night raids will be comparatively more successful than day action since at night the darkness acts as a cover and the movements difficult to discern.

Further, it is advantageous to the US since they have highly sophisticated night vision and surveillance equipment, which the Taliban does not have.

There is no doubt that it is disturbing for normal citizens to be disturbed at night. This aspect is played up and encouraged by the Taliban who have a hold over such villages which are attacked so that the American advantage in night operations is nullified.

Since Karzai does not have a control over all of Afghanistan, he cannot but help it in raising such issues so as to appease the general population. He cannot be seen as a US stooge!

I presume that when raids are conducted they are on hard evidence of specific target.

One cannot subject own troops to danger without a worthwhile mission.

To make arbitrary raids would only embitter the local population and that no force fighting an insurgency would encourage. It would be detrimental to the effort being put in to stabilise the country.

However, the fallout is always complaints forcibly coerced by the Taliban or other insurgent groups so that in a world of human rights sensitivity it jars the sensibilities and puts pressure on the troops.

The unfortunate part is that there are none who observe or comment adversely on the atrocities committed by the terrorists and the locals too cannot raise their voice since the terrorists are beyond law and their power over the population grows from the barrel of a gun.

That is the sum total of the whole issue.
