Photography is a sin, unIslamic, says Darul Uloom Deoband

India’s leading Islamic seminary Darul Uloom has issued a fatwa, saying “photography is unlawful and a sin”, even though Saudi Arabia allows photographers inside the holy city of Mecca and live telecast of namaz is beamed on Islamic channels across the world.

Mufti Abdul Qasim Nomani, Mohtamim (Vice-Chancellor) of Darul Uloom Deoband, told PTI on phone, “Photography is un-Islamic. Muslims are not allowed to get their photos clicked unless it is for an identity card or for making a passport.” He said Islam does not permit video-taping of marriages or clicking of pictures to save as mementos for future generations.

When pointed out that Saudi Arabia, which follows the Wahabi school that aspires to return to the earliest fundamental sources of Islam, allows photography in the holiest of Islamic cities Mecca and beams live coverage through the year, Nomani said, “Let them do it. We do not allow it. Not everything they do is correct.”

Nomani agreed with the fatwa — a religious edict issued by Darul Ifta in Deoband — regarding a query from an engineering graduate saying he was passionate about photography and wanted to pursue it as a career. “Photography is unlawful and sin. Hadees (recorded Islamic tradition) warns sternly against it. Do not do this course. You should search any suitable job based on your engineering course,” reads the fatwa posted on the school’s website.

All India Muslim Law Personal Board member Mufti Abul Irfan Qadri Razzaqi also agreed with Nomani’s fatwa. “Islam forbids photographing of humans and animals. whoever does that will be answerable to God,” Razzaqi told PTI. When reminded that Saudis allow it, he said, “Just because they are richer than us doesn’t mean they are also correct. If they are allowing photography they will be answerable on the Day of Judgement in the court of God.”

A similar fatwa was issued when a television reporter asked if his “facing the video camera” is against Islam. “You are right, it is prohibited in Islam to photograph and to let others photograph you. Therefore, you should seek forgiveness from Allah for the same and choose for you a work which is free from such prohibited acts.

“A work which involves unlawful and haram things is obviously unlawful. If the work includes oral or written reporting as well then the entire income will not be labelled as haram,” reads another fatwa. However, Mufti Saif Abbas, president of the Shia Chand Committee, said his sect allows photography and television viewing. “Islamic channels such as Peace TV, QTV, ARY and others beam live coverage of namaz, Hajj…are they all wrong? I have argued with my Sunni colleagues that there is nothing wrong with photography,” he said.

NEW DELHI: India's leading Islamic seminary Darul Uloom has issued a fatwa, saying "photography is unlawful and a sin", even though Saudi Arabia allows photographers inside the holy city of Mecca and live telecast of 'namaz' is beamed on Islamic channels across the world.

    ******************************

This is so unfortunate and antediluvian!

Common Muslim are a progressive lot, but their religious leaders and organisation are so stupid and out of synch with modern necessities and aspirations.

They are making a mockery of the educated and enlightened Muslims and are doing Islam a great disservice by proving the propaganda that Islam is totally out of the ambit of contemporary reality and is wedded to a timelock.

These organisation insults the modern, educated, emancipated Muslims, who are equal to all in challenging the realities of the modern world,

These Muslim organisation of India are so power hungry that they feel that they are the sole inheritors of Mohammed and ridicule Saudi Arabia, the mother of Islamic teaching and centre of Islamic ethos and existence!

Once again, the Shias appear to be in synch with the modern world since they have a different take than the bigots from the Sunni fold!

so if photography is haram why does the Mufti still allow himself to appear in the news photo?

if a Fatwa clearly goes against individual rights (beyond religion) can any Indian court declare it null and void?

just made me think of an old belief that the photographing flash could take a mans soul away. however of course this Fatwa is motivated differently.

And he issued this fatwa with his photograph over electronic media. This Deobandis were and are a source of virulent Islamism that resulted in creation of Pakistani sore. It's too bad for them that UP wasn't included in Pakistan.

In the other thread you were talking about how all politicians are bad. But a bearded mulla starts doing politics and suddenly he is not a politician. Politicians are bad but mullas are "pious" people who don't do politics.

There is a huge rift between the Deoband,Salafi(ahle hadith) and Bralevis, but more so the picture thing is kind of unanimous amongst some of my orthodox mennonite and catholic friends.

    But why are pictures haram?

-- Just because no one belonging to the tribal society ages ago did not have access to digital camera!

    So what your take?

    Photos are illegal?

Masturbation, sex outside wedlock, animal sex and homosexuaity is banned in Islam with serious implications in Sharia Law.

    Does not happen?

There is enough of takes on the web to show that Mullahs, the holy Joes, indulge in that!

    Let us not be hypocritical!

    Since when?

The Catholics have questioned the Pope.

Have you the guts to question the lowly, illiterate Mullah man in your neighbourhood who holds your gonads?

    Musharraf failed!

Tough I agree that if you are ugly and your mug could scare the people, it is good that you avoid having your photos taken!

Ok first of All Sharia Law in its true sense is only present in Saudi Arabia, and that too i doubt its implemented, qatar, bahrain, kuwait have a lose form of Sharia Law.The Turks like us have had centuries of interaction with people of other religions,we belive in a deeper understanding to life more explained by the sufi saints that taught us about life and wisdom.
But really yes if you think that hypocrisy is present,it is present,we cant do anything about it.
