Delhi to get missile defence ring next year

Hyderabad: The ballistic missile defence system (BMD), being developed by the DRDO will be deployed in Delhi by next year-end, according to Dr Avinash Chander, the new chief of DRDO and scientific adviser to the defence minister.Other major cities will get the defence system in phases, Dr Chander said.

He was speaking to this newspaper on his maiden visit to the city after taking over as DRDO chief. Dr Chander said the BMD is a two-tier system consisting of two interceptor missiles for both high- and low- altitude interception. Dr Chander said the Light Combat Aircraft will go for initial operational clearance-2 by September 2013 and for final operational clearance by the end of the next year.

Speaking about forthcoming projects, Dr Chander said the indigenous Airborne Early Warning and Control System, with integration and completion of flight trials on three aircraft, will be ready for induction by next year. Induction of missiles developed with MBDA is on the cards and would be achieved within given deadlines, he said.

While the new defence procurement policy aims at promoting indigenisation while providing opportunity to Indian industry for participating in defence production, the DRDO’s aim is to reach for 75 per cent self reliance, he noted.

The Headline is slightly misleading, typical of Indian Journalists who cant spend a few minutes researching the topic on which they plan to write.

Delhi is one of the few cities in India (if not the only city) with missile defence shield. The S-300 SAM systems purchased from Russia in 1996 is presumed to guard Delhi's airspace and has a significant anti-ballistic missile capability.

However it does remain to be seen if the indegenious system complements the S-300 or replaces it in Delhi Missile defence network.

    Sure, its fairly common knowledge.

Since 1995 India had been negotiating with Russia regarding purchase of the S-300, in response to Pakistan's deployment of M-11 missiles from China. In 1995 Russian Defense Deputy Minister Kokoshin offered to sell S-300 missiles during his trip to India.

Following this offer Indian officials started negotiations with the Russian manufacturers, and in August 1995 the Indian Defense Secretary Nambiar went to Russia to observe tests of the missiles near Moscow. The $1 billion purchase is said to include six S-300 systems, with each combat system consisting of 48 missiles. Reportedly in June 1996 27 S-300 missiles were delivered to India.

These S-300 missiles were bought to protect vital areas of strategic importance. Nothing is more vital than the capital of the nation...aka. delhi. Thses missiles provide cover for Delhi from IRBMs...

This is highly debatable regarding does India have those S-300?

One theory I am figure out is:
Concerned about Pakistan acquiring M-11 Missile from China, India urged for a ballistic missile defence system, Patriot, Arrow and S-300 were the options, it is well known that US blocked any attempted deal of the Arrow system but what was not aired was status of S-300 deal, but most probably it did not reached India and most probably been blocked by US. In fact the cause for an indigenous missile defence system got initiated because of those reasons.

These mentioned link claims that India have acquired the S-300 from Russia but on the other hand it also claims that India have acquired PAC-3 from the US :facepalm:

So without any evidence we should not come to any conclusion that those S-300s have been deployed in India, moreover their is also any lack of information about testing or trail exercise of these system in India. All that being claimed is just a few website or news agency without any credible evidence.

India has no S-300 system. India was interested in Arrow and later decided to go on its own with help in certain areas from Israel and France.

As far as I have heard from some senior ppl in authority...they have vehemently denied about the existence of the S-300s..that is why I asked can you prove that apart from providing links telling stories about 'possible sales'???...and being one of those 'stupid journalists' myself I would love to be proven wrong

Fighter jets that don't break down from a lack of spares all the time? A nuke sub that doesn't choke 40 people to death? A carrier that actually gets delivered on time? :namaste:

We paid $20M to Ukraine (not Russia) for our carrier. You have paid $2.3B and counting. We decided to manufacture our own copies of Russian fighters after realizing how Russia liked to price-gouge folks over spare parts...

LoL china would go crawling on all fours and lick russia's ass to get some good S-300/400 or an Akula class compared to the c-grade Type-92 or 94 that sink with all hands aboard or MKK rip-offs that fall like flies.

China is still hoping to match Russian quality of 80's by copying from derelict ukranian rejects. No wonder even pakistan is scared of using there weapons and only after being shooed away by the scrap yards of EU or US they finally go to chinese.

In phases as mentioned in the article. Mumbai would be next after Delhi.

There are no S-300 systems in India. There were reports that we were looking into it, but DRDO promised a system superior to the S-300, which they are delivering now. So the indigenous system was given priority and the S-300 was canceled. The same with the PAC-3. Both S-300 and PAC-3 were evaluated before settling with PAD/AAD combo. PAC-3 was nowhere near our BMD, so it had no chance in the first place.
