TRADITION Defeated Egyptian judo star REFUSES to shake hands with Israeli rival following Rio Olympics bout after fans warned him not to ‘shame Islam’ by taking part

Islam El Shehaby refused the customary post-match ritual after losing to Or Sasson

Egypt’s Islam El Shehaby, blue, declines to shake hands with Israel’s Or Sasson, white, after losing during the men’s over 100-kg judo competition

Judo athletes generally bow and shake hands after the bout as a sign of respect for each other.

However when victorious Sasson, who is ranked fifth in the world, extended a hand of sportsmanship, El Shehaby refused to reciprocate the gesture, shaking his head.

While the Arab athlete did not explain his actions after the match, media outlets in Egypt are reporting that El Shehaby has received pressure from fans to not compete against the Jewish competitor.

On Twitter, one extremist supporter posted before the match: “You will shame Islam. If you lose, you will shame an entire nation and yourself.

I saw some clippings from Egyptian shows where they consider it to be a shame to even be an israeli or to even talk to to a jew. So it seems the general Egyptian population pretty much hates Israel.
That being said, Judo is a Japanese art and shaking hands is not a Japanese thing.
In Judo matches you MUST bow. Shaking hands is not required.
So technically this Egyptian did not do anything wrong, but his hatred/butthurt of Israel is clear.

He did not want to bow in-front of a Jew .....technically he could be disqualified ................from this match or the next match .
