Stone Pelting: CRPF To Procure Full-Body Protectors For Troops

Ever since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen Terrorist Burhan Wani on July 8, the Valley has been witnessing violent protests, stone pelting that has injured more than 2,500 CRPF troops. J&K: With surge in stone pelting incidents, CRPF to provide ‘full-body protectors’ for jawans
In a bid to protect its men from injuries in turbulent conditions of Kashmir, CRPF has decided to introduce high-quality full-body protectors for its forces.

Ever since the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8, the Valley has been witnessing violent protests, stone pelting that has injured more than 2,500 CRPF troops, reports TOI. So as to deal with the prevailing situation, the “full-body protectors” will shield the jawans from head to toe and shall be provided to the troops soon, said a senior official.

Due to the violent protests, many CRPF jawans had to either undergo surgeries on head, neck or face. With a surge in stone, pelting incidents security force reviewed the situation analyzing how many soldiers got injuries primarily on their neck, face, and legs.

Moreover, with the Valley set to welcome winters in the coming months, the top brass of the security force thinks that the jawans need to get a sense of safety.

The “full-body protectors”will be light in weight, and along with physical protection, they will also have special fire retardant, protective sheets for front and back pouches with trauma pads and high impact resistance rubber inserts. The outfit will include a sweat absorbing unbreakable soft plastic chest protector, elbow pad, shin guard, upper arm protector, shoulder pad which will secure both shoulder and neck, groin protector, forearm guard and thigh guard while head and face will be secured by helmets, reports TOI.

According to a senior official, “full-body protectors” were deployed earlier as well, however, they weren’t enough. Currently, in J&K, CRPF has 60 battalions and an additional 130 companies— a total of around 70,000 troops.

Now, Bulletproof vests for CRPF in J&K

    Highlights
    • CRPFin Jammu & Kashmir is purchasing 183 light bulletproof vehicles & 27,500 bullet-resistant jackets to ensure more protection for its jawans
    • Officials said the govt wants to provide an “absolute” shield to the security personnel, who have been dealing with violence for over four months

NEW DELHI: In one of its biggest procurements in recent times, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), engaged in security and counter-terrorism operations in Jammu & Kashmir, is purchasing 183 light bulletproof vehicles and 27,500 bullet-resistant jackets to ensure more protection for its jawans while fighting terrorists and stone-pelters.

Officials said the government wants to provide an "absolute" shield to the security personnel, who have been dealing with violence for over four months since Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani was killed.

CRPF, Border Security Force and J&K Police convoys are attacked by Pakistan-based terror outfits and more than 150 jawans/officers have been killed and several thousand injured in these attacks in the Valley in past few years. It has been seen that most deaths are because of lack of adequate bullet-proof jackets, which can withstand fire from small arms and rifles.

The CRPF is procuring 27,412 international quality bullet-resistant jackets which are used by the forces of western countries including the US, France and the UK. A global tender was issued earlier this month.

The force has also issued a tender to purchase 183 bulletproof vehicles like Rakshak or Gypsies. CRPF director general K Durga Prasad told TOI, "The procurement of good quality gear and vehicles was pending for a long time but the government has now given us a go-ahead to buy safety equipment as there is high demand and our men are working in high risk zones."

In another move to boost the morale of jawans, CRPF has recommended giving "out of turn" promotions to its personnel who demonstrate gallant actions.

Just because it is a global tender, does not mean they can't be made in India.
