Are the Indian Communists reforming and moving towards a left democrats type position of the European left from the hardline approach they have adopted till now? A welcome move if that is the case.

CPM pitches for Left democratic option
    Kozhikode, April 6, 2012, PTI:

The CPM party Congress on Friday adopted the review report and political resolution presented by General Secretary Prakash Karat, seeking to forge a Left democratic alternative against the “neo-liberal” policies of the Congress party and “communal” agenda pursued by BJP.

Briefing reporters after the morning session of the ongoing Congress here, party politburo member Brinda Karat said there was “near-unanimity” on the political resolution. But two delegates from Andhra Pradesh voted against it. “Please do not call it as dissent,” she said.

She said the reasons for their opposition was not specified. “Two comrades raised their hands in opposition when the resolution was put to vote. We do not know what prompted them to do that,” she said, adding that the Andhra Pradesh delegation itself supported the resolution.

She said one of the delegates had placed an amendment to the review report which was also put to vote, but he could not get more than his one vote for the amendment. Karat said 343 amendments and 33 suggestions were taken up by the Congress during the two-day discussions on the resolution, of which some were accepted.

She said the general trend was that the amendments discussed were aimed at strengthening the basic framework of the resolution.

    Thrust

The main thrust of the political resolution was based on the assessment of events since the last party Congress, current situation and future direction of the party, she said. On the issue of withdrawal of support to the UPA government in 2008 over the nuclear deal, about which different views reportedly prevailed in the party, she said the party, at all levels, had endorsed the decision.

“The party Congress, which is the highest decision-making body of the party, has also now put to rest all speculations on the matter by adopting the political resolution,” she said.

Halt! How to save the world

    J.P. YADAV

Kozhikode, April 7: Red guards have taken position at the gate. The edifice is not the Kremlin but Tagore Hall remodelled to resemble a fortress that is hosting the CPM’s party congress in this northern Kerala city.

Inside the air-conditioned hall, the party’s finest are working on a “how-to” document. Unlike the “how-to” paperbacks that tackle daunting tasks ranging from winning friends to making the first million, this one will offer advice on how to replace “imperialist globalisation” with “people’s democracy”.

When such grave matters are on the table, the least the overworked minds can demand is privacy -- which is what the red guards are delivering. The Red volunteers, as the party calls them, in matching fatigues have been deployed to ensure that only delegates with an identity tag around their necks can step inside.

The cordon sanitaire stretches up to the road, where the volunteers are regulating traffic to ensure that “civilian” vehicles do not stray in.

Cut to the hotels where the delegates have been put up. The volunteers have been posted there, too.

But the iron curtain is not leak-proof. “The discussion so far has been centred on the Chinese and Latin American models. Speakers seemed to be concerned about transgressions in China but did not have a clear view on what shape socialism in China will take,” said a young comrade.

The irony was not lost on him. “One leader did politely point out that we should be more bothered about India after the setbacks. He said China did not care about getting a certificate from the CPM,” the young delegate said.

It is no secret that the CPM is in a bind over whether to dump the Chinese model of socialism and derive inspiration from Latin American countries. The document will be adopted tomorrow.

Politburo member Sitaram Yechury, who came out of the hall to brief the media, strongly denied any confusion. “No... not at all. We are neither going to emulate the Chinese nor the Russian model. We firmly believe that CPM’s line has to be formulated according to concrete Indian conditions. We are only analysing experiences of other socialist countries to learn how they are fighting the challenges posed by imperialist globalisation to use them to formulate our strategy in India,” Yechury explained.

Yechury pointed out how capitalism was in deep crisis and would “emerge from this crisis by putting further burden on the working class till a concrete political alternative comes up”.

Till then, some CPM leaders appear to be having a smooth ride, thanks to capitalism. They roll into the venue in Skodas, Innovas or Scorpios as ordinary members stand in the sun and wave at them.

The fleet is a sign of goodwill from the local party unit that has run the municipal corporation for the past 34 years. The city boasts a host of car showrooms packed with models from BMW, Mitsubishi, Skoda, Honda and Toyota.

But don’t accuse the CPM of selling out. The party is at the forefront of a campaign to oppose forcible acquisition of land earmarked to widen the roads on which these multinational armada can cruise.

Left Democratic? Why do they have to include that word democratic anyway? Democracy as a term is getting rather overused, abused, trite and backdated methinks. We need to come up with an alternative political philosophy.

    ^^

Dunno man, the moment I hear the term democracy, I can visualize a very powerful country, or a group of powerful countries, invading another weak country and stealing their oil.

    LOL pmaitra

On a serious note, I think the Communist parties want to emphasize that they don't support political aspects like dictatorship of the proletariat or that democratic elections is only a step for one party rule type ideas. Also, social democrats tend to accept a thriving private sector along with a large public sector enterprise and a welfare state model as compared to only public sector industries in a communist model. Most European countries like Sweden, France, Germany e.t.c have spent majority of the post WWII era under social democrat or centre-left rule.

In any case, regardless of the merits of leftist policies, there is a strong support for leftist economic policies in India and hence the future of left parties. Even the BJP when it was renamed as such in the 1980 adopted "Gandhian socialism" over "integral humanism" by a small majority in its central party committee as an ideology under Vajpayee; which shows the popularity of leftist ideals even if they won't admit to it.

Oh this has been debated over and over again. Are you going to rely on unsupported claims? Their track record is much better than many so called 'patriots.'

I have explained this before. Focusing only on the economic ideology of the BJP has a split personality with a small section of centre right section and a section of RSS and affiliated supporters which basically are leftist - even ultra leftist in economic ideology. Case in point is Uma Bharti announcing that she will burn Walmart stores down. Ironically, if you shorn this faction of its identity politics, the would be very similar to the left parties in terms of economic policies. The BJP's lame excuses on FDI are hardly credible - Rediff.com India News

And read up on this history of the BJP, I didn't make it up when I said that the BJP central committee voted for the "Gandhian socialism" as its ideology in 1980 by a small majority. Later when economic liberalization started in 1992, the BJP opposed it and supported economic policies like promoting "Swadeshi" . Yet once in power, it embraced globalization and supported it and got castigated by the RSS for it.

What ever liberalization the BJP did was basically more of a liberalization by stealth similar to what the Congress does as well. The only difference is that here its Sonia Gandhi and its NAC that champions the "left" personality in the UPA. While MMS, Montek Singh, Kaushik Basu et al rally the centre-right policies.

Infact, read what Swapan, an ardent BJP supporter has to say on this (Usual Suspects: BJP risks losing urban support)
