The military says “all international agreements and commitments will remain. We pledge that good relations with all world countries will continue." and that the armed forces had taken power in the country to protect the democratic order and to maintain human rights in a statement sent by email and reported on Turkish TV channels.
___________
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says it's uprising by a minority.

Erdogan has called on people to take to the streets to oppose the uprising.

Mr Erdogan said he was on his way to Ankara and those involved in the action would pay a heavy price.

It seems extremely likely that a coup d'état is happening in Turkey. Right now, news agencies are speculating, but videos and information pilfering out indicates a military takeover of the capital, Ankara, and possibly other cities.

I am not sure what the allegiance of the soldiers are. Are they part of the secular Kemalist deep state or are they a bunch of Islamists like Erdogan? We shall have to wait and see.

@Razor once wrote about the Turkish deep state.

Martial Law Declared in Turkey Amid Military Coup Attempt

ISTANBUL — Military factions in Turkey attempted to seize control of the country Friday night, setting off a furious scramble for power and plunging the crucial NATO member and American ally into chaos in what already was one of the world’s most unstable regions.

Martial law was declared in Turkey, which has been convulsed by military takeovers at least three times in the past half-century. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Islamist president who has dominated politics for more than a decade and sought to exert control on the armed forces, was forced to use his iPhone’s FaceTime app to broadcast messages beseeching the public to resist the coup attempt.

“There is no power higher than the power of the people,” he said in a night of wild confusion and contradictory accounts of who was in control. “Let them do what they will at public squares and airports.”

Mr. Erdogan’s whereabouts was not clear.

The state-run Anadolu News Agency said hostages had been taken at military headquarters in Ankara, the capital, including the armed forces’ chief of staff.

The events began unfolding late Friday, roughly around 10 p.m., as the military moved to stop traffic over two of Istanbul’s bridges, which cross the Bosporus and connect the European and Asian sides of the city. In the back streets of Beyoglu, in the European districts, bars and restaurants were showing footage on television of scenes at the bridge, while partygoers were glued to their mobile phones trying to learn what was happening.

“Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command,” Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said in comments broadcast on NTV, a private television channel. “The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so.”

Interesting so Erdogan asks people to take on street and fight.... civil war or peaceful takeover?

Another Syria in the making? More instability in the region specially a big powerful middle-east country like Turkey. We already know that there are news about coup in Pakistan as well... interesting times ahead.

MODS... I am still getting error while posting, site slow etc. There are many same threads going on so please make a good title like --> Turkey: Coup underway, Martial law imposed

Some important points...

http://abcnews.go.com/International/attempted-military-coup-underway-turkey/story?id=40618135

Turkey has a history of military coups. The last coup was in 1980, when 650,000 people were put under arrest. The country has the second largest army after the U.S. and any NATO country.Erdogan has long blamed a powerful Muslim group led by Turkish preacher Fethullah Gulen, a moderate Turkish cleric living in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania, for leading a parallel state."This is not a country that can be run from Pennsylvania," Erdogan said. Before 2013, the two were political allies before falling out over corruption allegations leveled at Erdogan.

In 2012, more than 300 military officers were jailed over an alleged conspiracy to overthrow Erdogan's government. The armed forces were long viewed as guardians of secular republic established by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, carrying out three coups between 1960 and 1980 and pushing an Islamist-led government from power in 1997.No further information was immediately available.

Differences between the past coups and the current one.

In the past, the military acted on calls from the people and staged a coup against an unpopular government. That is not case today, the AKP and Erdogan might be very polarizing and might have alienated an important segment of society but they still have the backing of almost 50% of the population. And we also have not seen large scale calls for a military intervention, security collapse, chaos, the factors that played an important role in past coups. Also missing in this coup is the chain of command. In the past, the top brass went on TV right after the coups and explained the public the reasons for the intervention. That has not happened yet. So this coup might not have the backing of the top brass."

As an end note, Tol added that, "if Erdogan survives this, his hand will be even more strengthened and he will be able to convinced people more easily that a presidential system is necessary."

Now Turkey can fuggeddabout EU membership. If Brexit Leave had lost, EU would have entered membership negotiations with Turkey the very next week. Erdogan "failed" to deliver EU to the Turkish people in exchange for his excesses. The military exacted its cost.

Don't think this coup will succeed. In all probability this is a message for eradogan to play nice.

He's been playing both sides lately. One can argue ISIS survived atleast one more year extra because of him.

‘Not going anywhere’: Erdogan gives defiant Istanbul airport speech, downplaying attempted coup
Published: 16 Jul 2016 | 01:16 GMT

Reuters
Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made a public statement on the attempted coup after his plane landed at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport early Saturday morning. The Turkish president blamed the bloody events on forces loyal to exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen, saying they would pay for it.

Erdogan has addressed crowds of supporters after emerging at Ataturk Airport.

Having thanked the public and politicians for their support, the president said that Turkey would not be intimidated by illegal attempts to seize power.

He said those involved in the military coup will get necessary response, regardless of what institution they are from.

Reassuring the audience that "the minority group" behind the attempted coup would pay for what they had done, Erdogan said the people of his country would stand up straight and strong.

Saying that the law is above all in Turkey, the president said that people going into the streets to support it was "the best answer" to those who tried to forcefully seize power.

Erdogan called the attempted coup "a gift from God," as it would help cleanse the military of "members of the gang," he was reported as saying.

Erdogan claimed that forces loyal to US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen were behind the attempted coup, saying that Friday’s events had shown that "the Gulen structure is an armed terrorist organization." The exiled preacher has resided in the US for over 15 years. Initially a firm ally of Erdogan, Gulen is now facing a potential life sentence in Turkey for orchestrating an earlier coup attempt as the two fell out.

Announcing that he was not going anywhere, the Turkish president said he would stay with his people.

The president confirmed that Turkey's Secretary-General had been kidnapped by the military behind the attempted coup, adding that the status of the head of the General Staff was unknown to him at the time of the speech.

He also said that fighter jets have been dispatched to eliminate a helicopter attacking the parliament building in Ankara.

President Erdogan was in Turkey's Mediterranean resort town of Marmaris at the time the events began to unfold in Ankara and Istanbul, he said, claiming that the hotel he had stayed in there was also bombed, but he had left it by then.

Earlier, the alleged presidential plane could be seen circling above mainland Turkey on the FlightRadar24 tracker, before heading to Istanbul.

Unconfirmed reports of explosions were coming from the airport following the landing of the plane, as some military aircraft allegedly flew by.
