Simultaneous bomb blasts across the country planned; explosive substances seized from suspect in Hyderabad.

A network reportedly connected to the Islamic State and planning to carry out simultaneous bomb blasts across the country was busted by the National Investigative Agency (NIA) on Friday.

While four persons were picked up from Hyderabad in Telangana, several more were detained from Rajasthan and Karnataka in raids conducted on Thursday night. Members of the network, which decided to carry out terror attacks at public places, planned to make Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) on their own.

The NIA drive is said to be spread pan-India including Bengaluru, Tumakuru and Hyderabad, sources added.

Explosive substances were seized from Nafeez of Tolichowki in Hyderabad. He was among the four picked up by NIA with the help of local intelligence officials here.

The network was formed by associates of some persons involved in terror activities like Farahtullah Ghori from Telangana. Some of them are reportedly operating from abroad, say the police.

They formed the network and planned to strike on the eve of Republic Day. The NIA registered a case at Delhi and conducted raids at different places including Bengaluru on Thursday night.

    Four more arrested in Karnataka

Four more youths were picked up from Karnatana – two from Jakkasandra, Bengaluru, and one each from Mangaluru and Tumakuru.

The four youths were picked up for their suspected links to Islamic State (IS) in a special operation that was carried out simultaneously in the three cities at around 2 am on Friday morning.

A senior police official confirmed the NIA operation in the three cities in the state and said that the four picked up were known to each other and were working in tandem.

Their online activity is said to have been monitored for nearly six months now and no credible information is available as to what triggered the intervention of security forces at this juncture.

City police sources said that they also wanted to interrogate the suspects to see if there is any connection to the IS linked threat letter to the French Consulate in the city.

    Mangaluru suspect a diploma holder

The suspect picked from Mangaluru is 25-year-old diploma holder.

Sources in the police toldThe Hinduthat Najmul Huda was secured from his residence in Permude village, near Bajpe, within Mangaluru police commissionerate limits.

Huda, son of a Moulvi in the local mosque, had completed diploma in polymer technology from government Karnataka Polytechnic in Mangaluru. Though he joined RV College of Engineering, Bengaluru, to pursue BE in chemical engineering, he left the course halfway and came back to Mangaluru, sources said.

The NIA personnel were completing certain formalities and preliminary inquiry is on in Mangaluru.

NIA special cell to monitor terror chatter on internet

NEW DELHI: In the backdrop of government drawing up a comprehensive strategy to tackle radicalization through internet and preventing youth from getting attracted to the ideology of Islamic State (IS), National Investigation Agency (NIA) has for the first time set up a special cell to monitor internet content and chatter. It will also help the agency generate its own intelligence vis-a-vis terror investigations.

For this, the agency has acquired state-of-the-art tools (software) from a US software giant. The tools -- approved by National Informatics Centre (NIC) and Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) -- will help the agency cull out communication having certain key words related to any kind of terrorism or radicalization attempt. They will also cull out suspect content across various platforms that could be put together to establish patterns through analysis.

Until now, such tools were available only with Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). This makes NIA the only agency outside the intelligence set-up to be allowed such surveillance.

t had been a long-standing demand of the agency that it be allowed to develop its own intelligence capabilities so that it can generate inputs related to its investigations. The agency had even presented a vision document to the NDA government asking for such powers and stressed on investment in cyber surveillance.

"Terrorists are not talking over the phone anymore. That is why it took so many years to apprehend Indian Mujahideen operative Ahmed Zarar Siddibappa alias Yasin Bhatkal even as he continued executing blast after blast. Unless we enhance our cyber monitoring capabilities, we are always going to stay a step behind the terrorist. All terror plans, radicalization, recruitment are to day being discussed over the internet," said an NIA official.

However, the job is easier said than done. In the day and age of encrypted communication and frequently changing codes for terror chatter, state-of-the-art tools can only help as much. Sources in intelligence agencies, which have been struggling to keep pace with this communication, say that it ultimately boils down to the man who is analyzing the data.

In analysis too, speed is the key. A conversation decoded after an incident has already taken place is of no use, said sources. India also lacks the wherewithal, at least as of now, to deal with encrypted data. The fact that servers of all internet and social media platforms are in the US, India is unable to force these companies to share information within a time frame.

"We are training our men as of now. The idea is to expand this cell across the country at all NIA branches. But we have shortage of manpower. As of now, only three men are under training," said another NIA official.

GoI did the right thing by such a move. NIA can work independently with intel.

India wants 24x7 online war room to tackle cyber threat from ISIS

With ISIS trying to lure young Indian Muslim men into its fold by spreading propaganda material in Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati and Urdu on cyber space, the Indian government is all set to create a war room to monitor social media. The plan is to set up a 24/7 monitoring centre.

With ISIS trying to lure young Indian Muslim men into its fold by spreading propaganda material in Hindi, Tamil, Gujarati and Urdu on cyber space, the Indian government is all set to create a war room to monitor social media. The plan is to set up a 24/7 monitoring centre.

Intelligence inputs indicate that the increasing use of Indian languages to spread the message of ISIS is an alarming trend that suggests that the terror outfit sees potential recruits from across the country. Other than English and Hindi, several regional languages are also being used to put out pro-ISIS material. In the past, Bangla has also been used to spread ISIS' hate propaganda targeting vulnerable youths in Bangladesh and India.

To combat the threat in cyber space the government set up a committee on December 15, 2015 to examine the feasibility of setting up a multi-agency 24x7 social media analysis centre and to prepare a blue print for the creation of a 'Situation Room' to analyse social media.

The committee is headed by Ashok Prasad, Secretary of Internal Security in the Home Ministry and has members from the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Information Technology and central intelligence agencies, the Minister of State for Home Affairs, Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary, stated in a written reply to a parliament question on Wednesday.

Mail Today had first reported in August that the government was planning an inter-ministerial body dedicated to the scrutiny of social media.

Indian youths who have already joined ISIS, or aspire to, are all attracted to the jihadi group's ideology that was put up on the internet. "ISIS handlers get in touch with potential recruits on social media. The vulnerable ones get radicalised after interacting with ISIS members, handlers online and then they are given further instructions on how to join the outfit," said an intelligence official.

According to intelligence reports, till now 23 Indians who joined ISIS have been accounted for and several others were intercepted before they could leave the country to join the group in Syria. While six are reportedly dead and two have returned, 15 Indians are still part of ISIS. Many of them are also in touch with Indian handlers who are recruiting for ISIS. "Some of these handlers were active within the country and some are in the Gulf," said an intelligence official.

Recent intelligence inputs have indicated that the Indians who are still in the ISIS war zone want to return home fearing for their lives. The terror threat on social media is not restricted to ISIS but also cover the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

The arrest of Mehdi Masroor Biswas, the Bengaluru-based executive, for allegedly putting out material favouring ISIS last year, had alerted intelligence agencies about the mounting threat on cyber space. Social domains have gradually become the new recruiting grounds for terror groups. Since then several youths, who were recruited online and wanted to join ISIS, have been intercepted.

Karnataka is a hub for ISIS as it is very close to Kerala and with congress ruling the state.

4 people are nothing, NDA should use this as an opportunity and come up with strong Anti terrorism law, more potent than POTA( where in even journalists, NGOs, and politicians can be booked).

Hope they do not miss the opportunity.

Recently the governor of J&K said that NIA should have jurisdiction over J&K too. Currently J&K doesn't come under NIA. It comes under something called as RPC (ranbir penal code).

Indian Mujahideen Now Returns as ISIS; NIA Arrests 6 Radicals
NEW DELHI/MUMBAI: The arrest of six youths by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday marked the return of a faction of Indian Mujahideen (IM) under the banner of Islamic State (IS), the global outfit that has so far attracted more than two dozen Indians. The arrest comes days ahead of the French president Francois Hollande visit to India for republic day.

NIA sleuths said that those arrested were radicalised online by 29-year-old Mohammad Shafi Armar alias Yousuf, a native of Bhatkal who runs Ansar-ul-Tawhid (AuT), formed in 2012 by IM militants who fled from Indian in 2008. His elder brother Moulana Abdul Khader Sultan was killed last year at Syria-Turkey border fighting for IS.

In 2013, Shafi was also instrumental in recruiting three engineering students, Mohd Mahruf, Mohd Waqar Azhar and Shaquib Ansari from Rajasthan. He then used a codename Atta Bhatkal. Investigators have identified 18 youths so far who have been recruited by Shafi using online platform. This time he used a codename Yousuf.

Those arrested were identified as Mudabbir Mushtaq Shaikh, a resident of Mumbra in Kalyan who was described as emir of the group.
He has been in touch with Shafi alias Yousuf for past 2 years.
A web developer, Mushtaq was presently working part time and has floated a outfit in the name of Junood-Al-Khalifa-e-Hind, which had similar ideologies that of ISIS. ATS officials said that thirtythree year-old Mushtaq was given the task of carrying out attacks in India. During the raids, Triacetone Triperoxide (TATP) an explosive similar to the one used in Paris attackers was seized in large quantities.

Along with TATP a complete manual instruction on how to assemble explosives was found in his home. Photos and maps of various streets in Mumbai, Maharashtra and outside the state were also found along with more than 50 SIM cards. Among the photos and maps were of defence installations and Airports. A huge number of cash in Indian rupees was also recovered from Mushtaq.

"We have also recovered a lot of literature which is in Arabic which we will soon be translating. Judging by the cash and the explosives and the SIM cards, it is clear that they were on the verge of planning some-thing big and could have been one of the first terror attacks by ISIS on Indian soil." said an ATS official on condition of anonymity.

The others were identified as Mohammad Nafees Khan (24), Mohammad Shareef Mounuddin Khan (54), both resident of Hyderabad, Najmul Huda (25), a native of Mangalore, Mohd Afzal (33), a resident of Bangalore and Abu Anas (24), a native of Lucknow. According to investigators, Shafi alias Yousuf has transferred Rs 6 lakhs to these suspects which was to be used to carry out any subversive attacks in India.

NIA officials said eight more have been detained for their affiliations with the group and is being questioned regarding their involvement. According to their disclosure, the group has also identified a place for conducting arms and explosive training in Maharashtra and Karnataka.
"They have been under the radar for past few months. When we came to know that they are in the process of procuring explosive material and weapons, we arrested them."

He is right, though. Most of the time our 'intelligence' picks up random Muslims, tortures them, and extracts false confessions.

Thanks for sharing your personal experience with us, sir. Can you please tell us more?

What kind of food did they offer you in jail? did they serve their special Biryani? Man! I'm jealous of all these people belonging to religion of peace who get free state sponsored Biryani. I keep sending messages to Indian intel services asking for some Biryani but somehow they keep telling me that I am not eligible and that it is reserved only for special people who belong to the religion of peace. Man! You people must be doing something right if you are getting free Biryani so often and getting repeated invitations to have more.

Any verifiable proof to back your statement. Were you trained in the land of Pure? I believe in proactive actions rather than reactive under previous UPA Government. If you are concerned about the work of law enforcement than you need to reach out to these wannabe thugs to stay with in the boundaries of our nations laws otherwise face the consequences.

Kerala man arrested for seditious FB comment insulting Pathankot martyr Lt Col Niranjan

A man in Malappuram district in Kerala was arrested under sedition charges for a derogatory Facebook comment on Lt Col E K Niranjan, who died in the terror attack at the Pathankot Air Force base, police said.

The post, which was written in Malayalam, can be translated as “One trouble is less now. Now his wife will get a job and money. Common people will get nothing. What a stinking democracy!”

“His Facebook post was seen as promoting enmity among people, insulting a martyr and undermining the Indian democracy. Anwar Sadhik was arrested last night and was charged under Section 124 B,” said Shah Jahan, SI at Chevayur police station where the complaint was registered.

Anwar was reportedly posing as a journalist working for the regional Madhyamam newspaper on Facebook. It was the newspaper that filed the complaint against Anwar as it feared the Facebook remark would tarnish the reputation of the newspaper. Police said the newspaper denied having any such employee.

India does not capture the big fish ever, they let them slip through their fingers (like dawood etc.). But to project a proactive image to the gullible public, Indian 'intelligence' arrests a few random Muslims and pretend they are doing some great work to protect the nation. All these arrests are just for public consumption, just to fool the public that Indian intelligence is doing something rather than nothing. That is why despite all this 'great intelligence work', terrorist attacks only continue.
