With the ongoing negotiations over the ECTA deal and the proposed Ram Setu Bridge. Would it be possible for India to impress the Sri Lankans to be part of Indian union? What might be the implications of such a scenario? How would the rest of the Indians react to it? What would be the reaction from Tamilnadu? What would be the ultimate fate of the Sinhalese people?

This is a hypothetical scenario and I urge all the DFIans to keep the discussion civilized. Your valuable opinions are highly appreciated.

Why would we do that or even need that ..We have enough 29 states to manage we don t need to add another one which is going to make our life more difficult ..

The implications are more damaging for you as the Ethnic Sinhalese will obviously not be happy ruled by indian s especially under the administration of Tamil s as TN is the only state which is closest to Srilanka ..This scenario will only create chaos in your country and will let some Fringe group take advantage and make it another civil war ...

You tell me what you think about this ..

I don't know what India will gain from the said ram setup and ecta deal. SL is too tiny to be a lucrative market. Only possibility is SL coming under Indian control (hypothetical)
On the contrary, SL will get a huge market, free movement and going to attract more middle class Indian tourists.

I don't think India will gain anything from these Deals/infra.

Yeah sure why not but that doesn't mean India will pay all your chinese debts and after that you decide to do a freedom movement. Nepal and Bhutan are already our 30th and 31st state so hop in and take the 32nd position ONLY AFTER YOU PAY THE CHINESE DEBT!!!!!

Well, I am not aware of the Chines debt but merging Srilanka into India is not possible. The first thing is Indian political system will not allow it..... regardless of what Modi wants.

Well that is a legit reason. But what about the possibility of an breakup of the island to two states?

Well the ECTA deal is on the exchange of the service industry. There are many jobs in Sri Lanka which haven't been filled by Sri Lankan workforce. That could alleviate some of the unemployment woes of India. More than that Sri Lankan jobs might be more lucrative to average Indians.

The Ram Setu bridge is intend to link Trincomalee with Mannar and then ultimately to Rameshawaram. India has already signed some agreements over the Trincomalee harbor area. India might extend her control over one of the best natural harbors of the world while China is tightening it's control over Hambantota.

The biggest issue with the trading with India is that though the national government has not imposed many trade embargoes on Sri Lankan products any Indian state can force embargoes and obstacles over the free trade across it's boundaries. There are no authority to control that.

Well yes. But what if the island is separated into 3 states or union territories which gives the 3 ethnicities their own areas to govern.

Moreover, my hypothesis is based on a peaceful integration of Sri Lanka to the Indian union. In such a scenario what would be the reaction of the Indian people.

India is not that kind of country,it can only happen by 2 steps-

1)SL govt. requests Indian Army to set up camp in Sri Lanka
2) Sri Lankans vote to merge with India,or an autonomous state of India
What if ECTA deal has been signed and Indians started to flood into Sri Lanka with their families. Would it create a ethnic up heal just like in Fiji?

We already have so much internal headache to sort out. Another 20 million people who have serious issue of integration with one of the ethnicity in India. Please spare us we don't want anymore headache.

We really want our country to prosper and don't want anymore politics. We already have too much of that.

Further add to that, we do remember this:
