Bangalore: The Karnataka Police will soon add the state-of-the-art Cornershot systems to its weaponry, taking its preparedness to tackle terrorism one notch up. Billed as the best weapon system world over, during counter-terrorism operations and close combat missions, Cornershots enable the user to effectively engage targets from multiple directions, without exposing any part of the operator's body. Popular handguns used by the police such as Glock, Sig Sauer and Beretta can be fixed on to Cornershot systems.
Alok Mohan, Additional Director General of Police (Administration & Internal Security Division) told Express that as part of the modernisation plans, the forces have been equipped with many gen-next gadgets. "The Karnataka Police have evolved over the years and we are definitely a solid unit with access to modern weaponry. Funds have never been a problem and our focus has been both on equipment and manpower. We are also exploring the possibility of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for policing," Alok said. Each Cornershot system costs around Rs 7 lakh.
Bangalore-based Alpha Design Technologies (ADT), in collaboration with an Israeli firm, will deliver undisclosed number to the state police, shortly. Col (Retd) H S Shankar, chairman and managing director, of ADT, said that the state police showed interest in Cornershot during Aero India-2013. "A team from the Karnataka Police had visited us and at the air show and were impressed with the features of the weapon system. We delivered the first piece for trials and evaluation in February this year and got encouraging response. The systems should be delivered by August," Shankar said. The user can view targets around the corner in real time, through a high-resolution video camera fitted on the system.
Requesting anonymity, a senior police official with the Centre for Counter Terrorism, said that Cornershots ensure pin-point accuracy during operation. "The firing can be so accurate using this system. It's all about split second reaction and this equipment is the best-suited. It is one of the weapon systems being used by more police forces in Indian now. It is an extremely smart system capable of causing maxium damage at short time. We can fit light weapons such as piston and light carbine atop Cornershot. We were given some some basic training we did extensive trials at various ranges," the official said.
More than 150 such systems have already been delivered to various organisations in India, such as National Security Guards, Maharashtra Police, Octopus (AP Police), Assam Riffles, MARCOS (Marine Commandoes of Indian Navy), Madhya Pradesh Police, Central Reserve Police Force and Special Protection Group.

Karnataka Police? Give them AK47s or INSAS and teach them how to fire before giving weapons like corner shot. And yeah, ask them to rid their big bellies accumulated with haram ki kamai.

TN police needs only the trusty .308 rechambered Lee-Enfield! (Or the AK and Sig Sauer pistols, which they use)

And that is what they use.

Shame on you K'taka police. You just created a scam by buying a :inr: 50,000 product for :inr: 7,00,000

After all, it is only a holder for a pistol and a magnifying sight over it. How could that thing cost so much?

Its not just a pistol holder there is a camera in the front with a display at the back plus the body of the system seems to be made of very good quality metal and polymer. Any military grade optical device is expensive.
But I agree that giving such stuff which you might need once in 10years is waste of money they could have utilise for Kevlar helmets and BPJ's

Who cares? Corner Shot isn't really going to be used everyday. They could have invested the money in bulletproof vests. Just saying.

Re: Cornershots to give Karnataka Police tech advantage, more fire pow

I think Bangalore is the next vulnerable city for terrorist attack after Delhi & Mumbai. Karnataka has a long coastline & belts like Batkal, Karwar etc are prone to islamic radicalization.

Lots of sleeper cell are in Bangalore & if araised state police should be equipped to handle any contingency. Bangalore being the 3rd costliest city in India & good revenue generator for Karnataka i do not think its waste of money investing on procuring best weapons. it is also the top 10 preferred entrepreneurial locations in the world & is known as silicon valley of India Karnataka police should be equipped with best of class weaponry to deal any situation.

It should have dedicated NSG commandos base along with good BMD.

God, who is criticsing police for modernising in India? Seriously guys this sort of equipment was found wanting in 26/11 and hence the MARCOs and NSG now have them so it makes sense for state/local police units to follow suit after all they will be the "first responders". These lessons have been learnt in BLOOD and as such if these weapons are becoming more common in India-GREAT! There is a general trend across India of these SRUs/tectical units becoming much better equipped and trained- let's hope this trend continues. It is quite wrong to attack those PDs/units with foresight and preempt and attack- procurements shouldn't always be after a tragedy has occured. Bangalore is a HUGE target for these terrorist scum and it needs to be one of the most secure and well-prepered cities in India for any attack.
