CHENNAI: Call them killjoys or spoilsport, police teams are at work in the city with the sole instruction to shame couples cozying up on beaches, parks and such public places. The teams, comprising about six policemen led by an inspector in each of the 12 police districts in Chennai, have so far 'netted' 500 couples.

While most couples are students and young people, also found to be showing "indecent behaviour" was a tahsildar and his colleague, an MTC bus conductor and a woman passenger, a woman cooperative society official and her male colleague. Charges of public nuisance have been slapped on some 60 couples.

Police say it's not moral policing, and that they are just ensuring that there is no indecent behaviour in public. "After we received many complaints from people, we formed special squads to narrow down on such couples. Most of them are found on the Marina sands. Our intention is not to disturb beach-goers. The teams target only those behaving badly in public view," joint commissioner of police (east zone) S N Seshasai said. He asserted that the police action had been getting good feedback from the public.

"The idea of the squad is to maintain law and order on the streets, roads and in public places. We have allotted separate manpower and vehicle for the teams," said Chennai police commissioner J K Tripathy.

But youngsters are not amused by the police action. "It is none of their business," said Prasad, an engineering student who was harassed by a policeman last week at the Marina. Often policeman call up the couples' parents and warn them.

While a large number of such couples are let off with a warning, a few have been booked under Section 75 (creating nuisance) of the Madras City Police Act.

Ask those families who have now stopped visiting Public Parks and other places because of the disgusting acts of these love birds. It is very easy to blame the "Moral Police", but similar restrictions exist in open societies in west, including USA.

/\/\/\ I agree, young couples can sometimes be mischievous in public places. But the fact that police booking even decent couples are well known. Trying to extort money.

Give them a chance, and they will do it. Don't you know the nature of policing here in India? But let us not convert this issue into a fight between the Indian Taliban and Liberals, because liberals do not enjoy their lives at the expense of others.

Go to any public park in Delhi and see those couple groping, massaging each others' not-so-public parts. You will understand the meaning of public nuisance. Each nuclear family has got a pair of sexually active members, we call them husband and wife, but even the most liberal ones would like to restrict their love-making activities under the confinement of the four bedroom walls for the sake of their kids. Also there is something called civility, you do not eat your breakfast while you poop, there is a right place and right time for everything.

As far as other acts like smooching are concerned, this is a cultural thing, you cannot talk about private space in a public place. Views might vary in different societies, like in USA smooching in Public is OK, they have got topless beaches, but people frown upon the women who choose to breastfeed in public, HYPOCRITES.

I was talking about decent couples. They know the difference between PDA and decent behavior in a public space. We cannot overlook one issue and discuss another. Both has to progress in tandem. We cannot be closet radicals as it fits our POV.

I agree 100%. Problem here is that most of us people are stuck between the Liberal and Conservative hypocrites. Neither of them is right. No innocent must be harassed. But at the same time look at the way people react to such stories. Cops have acted in Mumbai and several other places after receiving complaints from people living in those areas, but most of the time they end up delivering their own version of justice.

I had seen couples doing all sort of things at Lodhi Graden's back side or bushes.....and guess what the Liberal Elites (most are Rich, Babus, Liberals and Congress people including national damad and family) who visit Lodhi Graden did for their own sake? They let lose local police on these poor couples who could not afford a lodge or a cheap hotel to have sexual pleasures!

Nowadays, any poor looking couple is thrown out by police at will.......these are the double standards of our rich and political elites! For common man standards differ as he is expected to tolerate beyond his tolerance level and show some sort to Mutant western modernism......however zero tolerance when it impacts these elites! :)

/\/\/\ I read in TOI some weeks back that a lady in Bangalore is making great bucks by renting out rooms to couples for <whatever they want to do>. If they are of legal age, then police cannot do anything. Great business. :D

That law is propagated to the common people in metros and big cities is the result why people are open to discussing issues without fear of being persecuted. Go to Guwahati, book a hotel room with your gf, and you would find cops knocking your door after midnight, accusing that your gf is a call girl. You'd be forced to pay bribe just not to get harassed in the police station. People are also not aware of laws. This happened with some people I know.
