BJP asks Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah not to grant permission for Benny Hinn's prayer meet, reports Vicky Nanjappa.

Bangalore is gearing up for a spate of protests in the wake of controversial evangelist Benny Hinn’s visit to the city between January 15 and 17.

The Benny Hinn controversy is nothing new to Bangalore and the last time he had visited in 2005, major protests had erupted but the show finally went on thanks to a ruling by the Karnataka high court.

Hinn, who claims that he can cure diseases, has been accused of forcible conversions. The Bharatiya Janata Party in particular has been vocal about his visit and accuses Hinn of forcibly converting people under the garb of prayers.

This time around, the BJP has decided to go all guns blazing to protest against Hinn’s visit, and has even written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah not to give permission for the event.

Vishwa Hindu Parishad International President Praveen Togadia, Vishweshwara Teertha Swamiji of Udupi’s Pejawar Mutt and Sri Ram Sene chief Pramod Muthalik are expected to join the protests against Hinn.

The evangelist has always managed to set off a controversy and Karnataka politicians have been divided on the issue. The last time he visited Bangalore both Janata Dal-Secular supremo Deve Gowda and then Chief Minister Dharam Singh had visited the venue, much to the disliking of their political opponents.

Hinn’s 2005 visit also went up to the Karnataka high court. A division bench of the high court headed by Justice S R Nayak was told that permission should not be granted for the programme as it was not a prayer meet but a platform for conversions. However, the high court dismissed the plea quoting the right to religion clause in the Constitution.

The court however directed that a committee be set up to monitor the programme and in case conversions did occur then the organisers and also Benny Hinn would be liable for action.

The current programme is being organised by the Bethel AG Church. The organisers say that the entry fee is Rs 850 and Benny Hinn would be a guest speaker at the event. They have also said that it is only a prayer meet for the sick and not some miracle healing or conversion camp.

    Standard Psecularism.

I remember hearing about a bill that would ban black magic/superstition etc (basically scrutinize astrologers, vaasthu shastra and the like), but this is okay though! Not sure if that bill was passed.

Benny Hinn should be tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail.

We need a bill to stop religious conversion & to stop systematic ethnic cleansing. Will any party vouch for this if they come to power?

Many states actually have something like that wrt to forced conversions(monetary, or through force). I think Gujarat does, TN enacted the bill, and then I think it repealed through an ordnance. One thing it stopped was the constant monopoly of the 6-8 pm slot by televangelists(around 2000-2002)

I also faintly remember BJP saying something about an anti-conversion bill at one meeting earlier, last year.

So interesting question, does religious freedom imply right to proselytize/convert? There are many radical groups that equate the both, and will start crying of a law like that is passed. Israel has anti conversion laws too. In china people it's allowed around places of worship, but if you go out on the streets you get in trouble (I think).

My position on this is, if somebody really wants to change over, then they should be allowed to do so.

If anybody wants to convert they must not be forbidden.
However, any act which demeans other religion in any public gathering, must be prevented - by law if necessary

Converting by ones own will is fine but forceful conversion by luring money, missionary activity is wrong,

Missionary activities should be stopped at once in our nation..However no one should be stopped from gathering for prayers and if anyone wants to willingly convert to any other religion then this should not be opposed...BJP and VHP are protesting because they do not have means to convert non hindus to hinduism..

Actually there are ways. You just have to goto an arya samaj, where they can welcome you back. I know this because a big actress converted from xtianity to a hindu (nayanthara). some church organizations were angry and said that she was not allowed to convert as the bible does not allow people to change religions
Nayantara's conversion to Hinduism irks Christian groups - Oneindia Entertainment

P.S: Actually why do you need to have ways to convert. Just pick the god you want to pray to, and start following practices! there is nothing more really, this isnt college/organization for an admission form ,interviews etc :D

I am follower of arya samaj, Arya Samaj's Hinduism has nothing do with VHP or BJPs hinduism...Hinduism in its current form only attracts foreigners who are tired of their birth religion.

Well, VHP thinks otherwise. Now they called for each Hindu couple to give birth to 5 children to increase the hindu numbers ?? !! Really mature, I got to say !!

Telugu News | Telugu Flash News | Andhra Pradesh News | Telangana News

    *********************

The above quote says - "VHP responded severely to religious conversions. 'Every Hindu couple should give birth to 5 kids' said Ashok Singhal, Convenor, VHP. He warned that if religious conversions are not prevented, there is a danger of hindus becoming a minority. He made these statements in a press meet in Bhopal, MP. If Hindus do not want to become a minority, they should give birth to 5 kids, he added. He also said that they would certainly support Modi in the coming elections. I surmised that if Modi became PM then we would not need to bend to US pressures."

Wow !! What leaders we have and what they say what with the population explosion and all !!!

Black magic is other thing in which people are indulged in human sacrifices which is against the Advaita belief system.

These days evangelists are acting like sellers of religion by doing some tricks on stage.

There is no need to fear that others may convert as Hinduism is a wrong word and also it is not a religion. Its real name is SANATHANA DHARMA. You can consider anyone and anything as GOD, as far as you do not hurt anyone by your thought, word and deed, you are in the right path to attain salvation and this is the important thing for a human. Others things, say rituals and other related things are secondary. So, "DO YOUR DUTY, LOOK INTO WHAT YOU ARE DOING, DO NOT BOTHER ABOUT OTHERS."

Sooner or later India is going to be an Islamic nation....Muslims are allowed to have 4 wives and statistics suggest that they tend to have more children than other religious groups....Most of the Non muslims have adopted one child policy...we all know that laws in this nation are different for different religions...A muslim guy can marry 4 non muslim girls after converting them.. Polygamy should be banned for all religions rather than giving it as a privilege to muslims.

It is my gut feeling that Muslims are indeed going to overtake every other religion in the world and are going to brace for a show down.
