Hindu is just Muslim word for all kafirs in loosely define Indian subcontinent. All contemporary Muslim source called all sikhs as Hindus, because that's what they were for Muslim historians. Hinduism and Sikhism are both anglo-western cultural construct, conjured up in 19th century based on age old christian concept of 'pagan religion'. 'Hindus' are a confused bunch who are defining themselves on an idiotic western concept of religion and they don't even know it.

The idea that Sikhism is a sect of Islam or some sort of midway compromise between Hinduism and Islam (common perception in India too) was also propagated by the British. Thomas Patrick Hughes, a Christian missionary for 20 yrs, in Peshawar edited Dictionary of Islam where he first propounded this idea :-

Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiyani also though Sikhism was a sect of Islam and Guru Nanak was a Muslim while Hinduism was a polytheistic, idolatrous religion.

With regards to this, just need to re-iterate what Khushwant Singh had written :-

he compilation of the Adi Granth around 1604 AD was a landmark in the evolution of Sikhism. Though an eclectic work with compositions of Hindu and Muslim saints, it echoes the Vedanta through most of its nearly 6,000 hymns. There is a new breed of Sikh scholars who bend backwards to prove Sikhism has taken little or nothing from Hinduism. All they need to be told is that of the 15,028 names of God that appear in the Adi Granth, Hari occurs over 8,000 times, Ram 2,533 times, followed by Prabhu, Gopal Govind, Parbrahm and other Hindu nomenclature for the Divine.The purely Sikh coinage 'Wahe Guru' appears only 16 times.

The roots of Sikhism lie deep in the Bhakti form of Hinduism. Guru Nanak picked what he felt were its salient features: belief in one God who is undefinable, unborn, immortal, omniscient, all-pervading and the epitome of Truth; belief in the institution of the Guru as the guide in matters spiritual; unity of mankind without distinction of caste; rejection of idol worship and meaningless ritual; sanctity of the sangat (congregation) which was expected to break bread together at the Guru ka Langar; the gentle way of sahaj to approach God while fulfilling domestic obligations; hymn singing (kirtan); emphasis on work as a moral obligation. A slogan ascribed to Guru Nanak is kirt karo, vand chhako, naam japo (work, share what you earn, take the name of the Lord).

^albeit slightly misinformed. Anyway I don't think he's a Khalistani. The thing is, to win the cultural perception war the Indian government needs to reach out to people like him. Extend a leaf and show how proud the government is of Indians like him for being famous and stuff. He's extremely popular with all segments of American and Canadian society, not just Indian.

Sikhism is pretty much separated from hinduism after 80-90 period. Too much false poisonous mistrust against hindus has been spread and is continuing via their Gurdwaras. Both in and outside India. Barring one or two minority sect of sikhism, no one else likes to associate with hinduism

An Islamic/greek construct given to group multitude of co-existing Panths of India including but not limited to dvait, advait, bhakti, samakhya,ajivika etc. Sikhs refuse to be called a panth, they insist its a separate religion more close to Islam than any of indic faiths.
