Cong, SSS oust BJP from Saurashtra co-op bodies.
Express news service : Rajkot, Thu Mar 29 2012, 06:16 hrs

After wresting the Mansa Assembly seat from the BJP, more good news has come for the Congress, now from the co-operative sector in Saurashtra where the party won the Junagadh District Co-operative Bank and Mahuva Taluka Kharid Vechan Sangh elections in coalition with Sadbhavna Seva Samiti (SSS).

This is the second victory of the coalition between the Congress and SSS — which is led by rebel BJP MLA Dr Kanu Kalsaria — after they wrested the Mahuva Taluka Panchayat from the BJP last year. Earlier, SSS had led a farmers movement against a proposed Nirma cement plant in Mahuva.

At JDCB, the Congress has come back to power after three years. In both elections, the BJP maintained it lost due to caste equations and new format, while the opposition claimed it was due to anti-BJP trend among farmers.

At Mahuva, the SSS-Congress coalition got 41 votes against the BJP tally of 34, ending eight-year long rule of the latter.

SSS leaders said it’s a body of farmers and they voted BJP out, which did not support them in agitation against the cement plant.

“Unlike Dr Kalsaria, who single-handed led the agitation and won in the Supreme Court, the cooperative leaders from BJP did not support the farmers on the cement plant issue. After the taluka panchayat elections, farmers have once again expressed their displeasure through votes,” said SSS leader Pravin Kathiria.

Dr Kalsaria, who had met with an accident, too had campaigned in the elections. BJP leaders, however, refuted claims that the results showed an anti-party trend. “We lost as our leaders do not belong to the caste that majority of farmers are,” said Bipin Sanghvi, outgoing chairman of the Mahuva Taluka Kharid Vechan Sangh. “The coalition of Congress and SSS has also a played role in BJP’s defeat,” he added.

At JDCB, the Congress registered a thumping victory by winning 17 of the 22 seats. Some of the local BJP heavyweights, including former director Dollar Kotecha and former chairman Thakarsinh Javia, lost the election. The saving grace for the BJP was the victory of former MP Bhavna Chikhalia.

While the Congress claimed the BJP has failed to understand the needs of farmers, saffron party leaders said the new election format and reforms were responsible for their defeat.

“In 2008, when the BJP formed the body at the bank for the first time, the non-performing asset was to the tune of Rs 36 crore, which now stands at Rs 20 crore. Besides, we introduced administrative reforms to breathe some life into the bank, which has irked the union,” said Javia. “Besides, this was for the first time that taluka-wise voting was done instead of group-wise,” he added.

It seems the November elections will be keenly contested, unless Sonia makes any campaign goof-ups like last time.

News are coming from the parts where BJP has lost ground. It's Dr.Kalsariyas bastion. But surprisingly how news writer can give credit to congress ??
Mansa was an exception.BJP will retain it in next election. It's tussle and between Patels was the main reason of defeat.Modi knew it already and that's why he didn't go there for prachaar. Now Patels has lost a seat from thakor, so now they realized the matter very well. And Modi is in no mood to give ticket to Patels again in mansa. It's just 1 constituency.BJP has won many bypolls recently.Don't believe in media, if they show anything related to Gujarat.
In Gujarat, congress can't defeat BJP, only BJP can defeat BJP...:)

What do you want ?? Congress ruling Gujarat ?? If that happens than Gujarat will totally go down to the bottom place.
