NEW DELHI: On the eve of the Lok Sabha election results, Congress leader Rashid Alvi on Wednesday suggested that all regional secular parties should come together and elect West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee as the leader to keep BJP out of power.

Admitting that it may be difficult for Congress to form the government, he said, "It may be difficult for us to form the government, but all secular forces should come together to keep Narendra Modi away from power."

He suggested that all regional secular parties should come together and elect their leader. "Congress party will never hesitate to form a secular government," he said, PTI reported.

"I suggest that regional parties should elect Mamata Banerjee, who is secular, competent and honest beyond doubt, as their leader," he said.

Stating that he does not believe in exit polls and truth will come out tomorrow, Alvi said, "Whether the Congress conquers the electoral battle or loses it, we all shall be responsible for the credit or discredit. It will be injustice for anyone to only blame the leadership of Congress."

Sandeep Dikshit says he is 'unlikely to win'; another Cong leader says Mamata should be leader - The Times of India

Just because Mamtha Begum support Bangladeshis, does namaz & listens to mulla's does not mean she is secular.
Who is congress to talk about secularism when they themselves are Anti HIndus.

On what basis are congress, TMC, SP, BSP, Communist, JD(S) & other third front parties are called as secular parties who is to give them secular flag. All these are anti hindus.

If BJP is guided by RSS. Congress is guided & controlled by, Ahmed patels, Imam bhukaries, Mullas & christian evangelists.

If the Congress has come to this state, then it is a very unfortunate and a sad commentary.

But then, Rashid Alvi is quite effeminate in speech and should not be taken seriously.

He is an idiot to give up the ship even before there is any report that the ship has sprung a leak!

Congress must wait till the results are out before throwing the towel.

It is because the Congress has become the refuge of spineless fools like Alvi that it is coming to grief.

What guarantee is there that the EVMs are not fixed? What happens if the INC defies all exit polls and emerge the single largest party "again"? The EVMs have been proven in the past to be susceptible to hacking.

You never know, a "miracle" could be in the works! As it is, the INC has said that exit polls are hogwash.

In case of no "miracle" and a hung parliament BUT AIADMK has more seats than Mamata, will the INC then root for Jaya as leader of the secular front?

That is the only thing I am concerned about right now. There has been massive rigging by TMC in West Bengal. Dont know much about other states. If NDA falls anything short of a majority, Congress, 3rd Front,Left, AAPies will jump in together to form 'secular govt' forgetting all thier difference.
They will say, to keep communal Modi out, we are willing to forgive each other and shake hands.

Yes there has been massive rigging and people have also been killed.

The EC has failed the people of West Bengal.

it is not Modi. It is a case of being denied exercising our national duty of exercising our right to select our own representative.

One fool sitting MLA took over the booth and punched 100 voters in her favour and none dared to do a sausage!

Ms Bannerjee is a goon and so is her spokesman O'Brien. One can forgive O'Brien since the Irish (well he has some of that blood) are known to be street fighters and lowlife by the English.

Sir are you from west bengal?if yes, then can you please explain why is politics of west bengal so much about antics, violence, and other type of tricks involving rigging polls?

In these modern times when even in typical violent hinterland of india ,such as UP and bihar mostly there is peaceful and fair election .Then why is it so,that when it comes to west bengal it seems it is still stuck in times 30 years back. where there is violence ,gang war ,intimidation, threatening in the name of politics .

Both left and TMC are two side of the same coin who just want to grab power .Mamta banerjee personal image is good as in media but then , I do not think too highly of her what are your views about her ?Does bengal has hope under her?

O'Brien doesn't fit in in lutyens. His show of bravado and arrogance is amusing to watch. He can't contribute to any political debate. Needs prompting on his phone to make a point.
Also looks like a drunkard. Totally out of place. Should go back to Trincas or thereabouts.

But he is a very good quizmaster. That used to be his real job, before he took to calling Modi names.

Violence and rigging are are a legacy of the clever Mr Jyoti Basu and his goons.

Mamata has learnt it and is applying the same. The goons have changed sides from the Communists to the TMC.

So, that saved money for training.

UP has been peaceful because of its reputation of being a land that is the wild west and requires a sharp whip. Even so, the rigging was by the representatives of the Akhilesh Govt masquerading as holies of the EC. Smooth rigging.

WB was not taken seriously and the EC was plumb scared, apart from having chaps acting on behalf of the EC who will have to report after the election to that whimsical, mercurial, law by unto herself Mamata where logic or sanity does not exist and none daring to tell her so.

    Hobson's choice.

Reminds me of a performing street side monkey.

It is a shame that as an Anglo Indian MP he dived for cover when that Anglo Indian girl was raped in Park St and Mamata questioned her morals!

I was in school with Anglo Indians, whose parents held not high posts in the Railways or the Police or Customs and yet I sure know that they would stand up for the people without fear or favour.

Here, Derek and his family are crème de la crème financially of Bengal society and yet the bozo seems to have sold his conscience and let the ever dwindling Calcutta Anglo Indian society down.
