New Delhi: In yet another indication of increasing bonhomie with Samajwadi Party and deepending rift with key ally Trinamool Congress, the UPA government is likely to respond to the financial package for UP demanded by SP.

According to reports, UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's demand for Rs 90,000 crore as financial package for the state may get the nod from the Centre.

For this, the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has convened a meeting of eight secretaries from the economic ministries and the chief secretary of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.

Going by the party sources, the promise of a package to UP is a reflection of UPA's larger interest that may make the road to Rashtrapati Bhavan smoother.

However, the Centre has refused to release funds to the tune of Rs 168 crore to West Bengal Government for drinking water projects, pointing out that the amount disbursed earlier had not been spent by the state.

The Centre's move also assumes significance significance since the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has been demanding a financial package for her state in the form of a moratorium on debt repayments. But it chose SP over TMC for releasing the funds.

The development comes amid strains in relations between Congress and Trinamool Congress over presidential elections in which Mamata Banerjee has so far not committed her support to UPA presidential nominee Pranab Mukherjee.

If the wake of strained Congress-TMC ties, Congress is out to woo SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav since the UPA is heavily dependent on Mulayam's support for the candidature of Pranab for Presidential elections.

The increasing cracks in the UPA-TMC ties have changed the political equation and now Congress is all out to woo Mulayam to gain his support.

There have been several instances reflecting the growing bonhomie between the Congress and Samajwadi Party, the latest being the presence of Mulayam Singh during the nominations filing of Pranab Mukherjee as well.

As Pranab filed his nominations, Mulayam Singh was seen cheering him along with Congress President Sonia Gandhi and PM Manmohan Singh.

Before this, the SP supremo was seen sharing the dais with Congress leaders during the function to mark completion of three years of UPA II in Delhi.

True.. unfortunately the UP government's reputation isn't spotless either. I'm actually wondering how much of the proposed aid would actually reach the common people & not end up on parks, over-sized elephant & (bicycle) statues ;) along with spanking new vehicles for politicians (although that order's just been recalled but there will be more cases) . Somehow I would say that the UPA just chose another blackhole to sink the tax-payers money.

Did the UP govt give a roadmap as to how this boost package would be used to kick start the ailing economy ? Did they explain how this money would be utilised to improve infrastructure or the public services..? Did they give any guarentee that this is not the tax payer money down the sinkhole ?

Did they give anything at all except the support of the MPs at their disposal to support Pranab ?

This is a gift to SP for it's support to Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, and a kick to TMC for it's idiotic musings. Well done. But Congress needs to be careful of SP. Mulayam Singh is not known in political circles to be constant.

Excellent point. The central Govt. should also not release the money in one go. It should be released in tranches, looking at the results of the previous disbursements.

This is our money and needs to be carefully used and not for bribing SP for voting for their Presidential candidate.

Yes it is a plain and simple bribe a quid pro quo for the votes for Pranab Mukherjee.
