A chain of static sensors, first of its kind in the State, is being installed in Paradip on trial basis to bolster coastal surveillance and security under the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).
The chain of sensors is expected to become fully operational by March, 2014. Prior to this, the Coast Guard had operated the sensors on trial basis at the local light house. This sensors are being set up as part of the ongoing efforts of the Coast Guard to strengthen coastal security along the country's coastline.
Commandant, ICG, Paradip, SNM Pattnaik said, "The static sensor will be commissioned in March, 2014 at Paradip and Gopalpur in Odisha. It would help augment patrolling along the east coast, keep track of vessels and boats in Indian Coast and prevent infiltration, smuggling and other illegal activities."
The chain of static sensors would ensure near gap-free electronic surveillance of the entire Indian coastline up to 25 nautical miles from the coast, he added. Pattnaik further informed that high end surveillance gadgets such as frequency diversity radar, electro-optic sensor, VHF sets, global positioning system and metrological equipment have been installed at the light house. It will monitor the movement of vessels and boats of fishermen by taking their video within 25 nautical miles off the coast. Though another static sensor would be set up at Gopalpur, it would operate under Paradip.
Data generated by the sensors at Gopalpur will come to the ICG headquarter, Paradip which will serve as main operating centre. The data will also be interfaced with the Vessel Traffic Management Systems of the major ports and the fishing vessel monitoring system.
Post 26/11 Mumbai attack, a complete surveillance mechanism along the east coast was urgently needed. The static sensors were planned to monitor the high sensitive traffic density areas along the coast of India. The coastal surveillance network will provide an integrated picture of all the vessels traversing along the coast. As part of this project, a chain of radar stations along the coastline of Odisha will be installed by the Ministry of Defence.
Meanwhile, Paradip port has provided berthing facilities for Coast Guard inshore patrol vessels (IPVs), small ships and interceptor boats. The surveillance equipment apart from improving safety and security would also help in enhancing the efficiency of search and rescue operations of the Coast Guard.
