KOTTAYAM: Chief Secretary Jiji Thomson on Thursday called upon the Church to introspect on its mission. He was delivering the keynote address on the mission of the Church at the valedictory function of the bicentenary celebrations of the Kottayam Orthodox Theological Seminary (Old seminary) here.

He also called for taking up the mission of spreading Christianity and added it was Biblically imperative to bring people unto Jesus.

Thomson, who spoke at a function being attended by Governor Justice P Sathasivam, highlighted the importance of the evangelisation mission.

Thomson began his speech by saying that he was speaking not as a Chief Secretary, but as a son of the Church.

“The ultimate mission of the Church is to spread Christianity and I am thinking of ways to fulfil this mission. There are three ways to achieve this goal, which are Church evangelisation, personal evangelisation and mass evangelisation. While mass evangelisation is being held through Bible conventions, everyone can go on the path of personal evangelisation,” he said, elaborating the term gospel as ‘go’ and ‘spell.’

When Express contacted Thomson over phone and asked whether his speech amounted to evangelisation, he said being a Christian he had the right to speak about Christianity. Replying to a question whether it is proper for him to speak about attracting people to Christianity while holding the Chief Secretary’s post, he said everyone has religious freedom and he could speak about it as a person.

“There is nothing wrong in speaking about Christianity while being a Chief Secretary,” he said.

Read this somewhere about IAS rules...

Rule 3 (I) of the All India Civil Service Conduct Rules, says that every government servant shall at all times
    (i) Maintain absolute integrity,
(ii) Maintain devotion to duty and
(iii) do nothing which is unbecoming of a civil servant.

    That is freedom of religion.

Instead of criticizing this statement, think what you can do to your faith.

India must be a tolerant society, every one has right to propagate their beliefs. We should not be paranoid or insecure in this regard.

its not against any religion. If a muslim girl is ready to marry a Hindu boy, with conversion or without, who the F*** is Kazi to call it intolerance?

India is a democratic country. We must not forget. Kazi cannot give commands to any citizen whom to marry whom not to. Their Duty is only towards what they have been appointed for. Not to change or call constitution of India intolerant.

If the guy uses his position as a civil servant to spread his faith, he should be kicked out. If not, then it is ok.

Bankrolling huge sums of money to convert people enmasse = attempt at cultural genocide and NOT 'freedom of religion'. Hindus cannot compete financially or politically with the Vatican/West or the Wahabis. Giving them an even playing field when they are already at a huge advantage is suicidal.

Dude, there is difference between people in govt power propagating their bull shit and people without power doing it. This is very basic and needs no explanation . will you accept a Hindu IAS officer saying that he will try to spread Hinduism? (Which implies favors for converts?)

More than this idiot secretary's nonsense I'd like to kick the dolts behind on this thread who take this idiocy lightly.A law should be brought to protect the native religions. It's a must. And this ba*ta*d has to be booked. If he is a common Christian man he wouldn't have been invited to give a lecture.Book the bugger.

Hindus need to get over this keeda of fairness and objectivity...everyone has the right to blah blah...after loosing more than 50% of your land + population, one would imagine the self preservative instincts have kicked in....but no you still want to be seen as "fair" and "just".

He did not think once before making such statements. That means these people are highly dedicated towards their belief, that their ideology is superior. There fore , we Hindus should learn this.

Of course we are lucky to take birth with such an ideology where we accept all beliefs are equal, but any ideology which claims one belief superior to another and works towards changing the ideology is wrong and must be countered. Because this creates challenge and conflict among ideologies.

I am glad that I am not the only one who thinks that way here.

But unfortunately, you still need to appear neutral and balanced to the naive morons to expose these fundamentalists. Only then will they start using their brains.

And who are we even being fair to ? So called minorities who are actually global majorities with 100+ countries under their influence. How many countries do we have ? Always reminds me of Ramdhari Singh Dinkar's famous poem :-

    Forgiveness is becoming of
    The serpent that's got venom
    None cares for the toothless,
    Poisonless, kind, gentle one
