BOOTs to Gharwapsi :Christian who reconverts as Hindu SC will get quota benefits: SC /

    Utkarsh Anand | New Delhi | February 27, 2015 11:14 am

Amid the controversy over “ghar wapsi”, the Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that a person who “reconverts” from Christianity to Hinduism shall be entitled to reservation benefits if his forefathers belonged to a Scheduled Caste and the community accepts him after “reconversion”.
Citing articles by B R Ambedkar and James Massey, and reports by Mandal Commission and Chinappa Commission, the court said: “There has been detailed study to indicate the Scheduled Caste persons belonging to Hindu religion, who had embraced Christianity with some kind of hope or aspiration, have remained socially, educationally and economically backward.”
The bench of Justices Dipak Misra and V Gopala Gowda held that a person shall not be deprived of reservation benefits if he decides to “reconvert” to Hinduism and adopts the caste that his forefathers originally belonged to just because he was born to Christian parents or has a Christian spouse.

    So, massive impetus for GharWapsi.

I think this is a fair decision. Reservations were given so that those who were discriminated against for centuries are able to rise up and compete. Christianity claims to remove that discrimination and provide them social mobility. I don't see why we should listen to pimps like John Dayal and embrace the concept of "SC Christians". If the Pope comes out and Tweets that Christianity has a caste system and SC Christians are discriminated against by UC Christians, then I can probably consider reservation for "SC Christians".

Till then, John Dayal can suck an egg.

What about those who convert slyly? Keep conversion under wraps to enjoy reservation?

If true then it is a remarkable move. Win-win situation for dalits!

They should first take Christian money and then go back to claim reservations.

    This is good news. @Bangalorean
True. Since Christianity does not have a caste system, Christians cannot ask for reservation based on case.
Ideally, any convert to Hinduism should be able to choose his/her caste.
Its a bit embarrassing that people have to be lured into Hinduism for the benefits offered by our quota system.
Now, I am expecting quotas to be increased as the number of Hindus belonging to scheduled castes go up.

I think this isn't something we need to worry about.

If someone converts "slyly', he is probably really enamoured of Christianity and believes in the religion. We are a free country - so of course such people who genuinely believe in Christianity, should be allowed to convert and be. We can't (and shouldn't) do anything about them.

However, it is much tougher to lure people with financial incentives now. And that is the right thing.
