The US has lodged a formal protest with Beijing after a Chinese fighter jet conducted a barrel roll "very, very close" over an American Navy plane this week, the Pentagon has said.

Rear Admiral John Kirby said the Chinese plane exposed its undercarriage to show that it was armed to the P-8 anti-submarine warfare aircraft during Monday's incident in international airspace near Japan.

He said the Chinese aircraft came within 30ft (9 metres) of the American plane, while the wing tips of the two aircraft were just 20ft apart.

Adm Kirby described the close encounter as "pretty aggressive, very unprofessional and unsafe".

The US plane is said by defence officials to have been conducting routine surveillance of the Chinese coast over the East China Sea at the time of its encounter with the Su-27 interceptor jet.

Adm Kirby told a regular press conference on Friday: "We have registered our strong concerns to the Chinese about the unsafe and unprofessional intercept which posed a risk to the safety and the wellbeing of the air crew and was inconsistent with customary international law.

Without a doubt that the Chinese fighter jets will act similar approach like this to Indian naval aircraft or ships in the very near future. Apparently, China is flexing it's muscles in a pugnacious way and it is the time that the countries in the South East Asia region with the similar interests should form some sort of a military alliance in order to defy and reciprocate the Chinese aggression. Wake up, India! China is being a member of BRICS does not mean it is your friend or someone you can trust.

if an American spy aircraft appears close to Indian territory, India should do the same thing to that plane.

It seems that the PLA is ready once again to sacrifice the life of 1 of their pilots so that they can inspect the latest American naval recon plane...

Everybody peeks, even your military do that. Remember RIMPAC 2014? You were already invited yet you still peeked... So don't think we are idiots here.

yes, everyone peeks, but no one peeks as much as Americans, no one peeks as deep as Americans.

Also everyone takes necessary measures to drive away peekers.

it's a game started by Americans, which in the old days Chinese had no strength to play, now we are simply playing by the rules.

Then you have no reason to complain if you're only reason to complain is the frequency of peeking. If you want then you peek more at the Americans...except, oops, you're already doing it both conventional military snooping and in cyberspace, not only against military targets but commercial and industrial private companies also.

You say you're playing by the rules. Have you seen American or European planes doing dangerous stunts in front or on top or beside Russian spy planes and bombers? What you're pilots are showing are noviceness and recklessness. Besides, everybody can do whatever they like short of attacking another country on international airspace. You don't know that?

Actually, I think that the Chinese were merely trying to impress that their pilots are now not the old stuff of the past that one thought them to be.

It must one one of their 'Greatest, Fastest, Largest, Bestest' faddish example that they are always out to impress on the disbelieving world.

I don't think a peace loving country like China would do anything that is aggressive.

IT was actually a j-11 instead of su-27 according to Chinese defense department. Pilot trying to show off skills? maybe, according to US footage, the j-11 was doing rolling move 9 meter in front of the p-8. That would be difficult because you are doing a flight show move in front instead of on the side or back of another plane.

Not likely. India will keep its emotions under check

China wants to pick fights with everybody including their benefactors, whose money and imports all has built China so far.

Who is complaining this time? Americans, they complained that Chinese aircraft followed them when they were peeking, isn't what PLA
did standard procedure? They send a spy plane scouting around China, we are even allowed to take minimum counteract measures? Is that how your country deal with unfriendly military aircraft near your territory? You do nothing?

America is the largest spying country in the planet who is monitoring the whole world through Internet, no one could ever beat them in this regard.

What Chinese pilot did is professional and appropriate, Americans have done the same thing to Russian planes more than enough times. If Americans think it's dangerous, then stop peeking.

Funny, China does not even recognises India as a friend. In fact, China is the one that'll become the biggest threat to India's national security, but not the West.
