A Chinese space station has begun its out-of-control descent towards Earth's surface and is expected to crash-land within a few months.

Launched in 2011, the 8.5-ton Tiangong-1 space laboratory had originally been a symbol of Beijing's ambitious scientific bid to become a space superpower.

However, last year Chinese officials confirmed the country's first orbiting space station had to be scrapped after its functions failed following two years in space.

Since then, the space station known as "Heavenly Palace" has been gradually decaying and, in recent weeks, has accelerated its descent into the Earth's atmosphere.

Pieces weighing as much as 100kg may fall from the skies
Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist from Harvard University, told The Guardian in an interview published Friday that he anticipated Tiangong-1 to hit Earth's surface sometime between this month and April.

While much of the craft is expected to burn up in Earth's atmosphere, McDowell also reportedly said that some parts weighing as much as 100 kilograms could crash-land to Earth with scientists unable to predict where they will come down until only hours beforehand.

China's equivalent of NASA, the China National Space Administration (CNSA), has informed the United Nations that the space station had begun its descent and would be carefully monitoring its final plunge.

The chance that anyone would be harmed by Tiangong-1's debris is considered highly unlikely.

Their space station failed, their lunar rover failed, their moon rocket just blew up. I hate to say it but tough times for a Made in China space programme. Maybe if they outsourced to India they could do better.

the space station was designed to have a 2-year life span. being launched in 2011, tiangong has already stretched its service by almost 3 years, it's nothing but a total success. India has done nothing comparable.

It hasn't stretched any service. It was supposed to be de-orbited in 2013 but the data links failed and it has been floating in space uncontrollably and only now is the Earth's gravity pulling it into rentry. If you are telling us you planned to have 100kg chunks of space junk landing in our cities then just declare war right now.

it was supposed to be de-orbited in 2013, because its designed life span was two years; it was not de-orbited in 2013 because we decided to let it stay, not because we lost control.

the datalink failed in 2016, two years after it finished its mission and was supposed to be decommissioned. it's true that the plan was to de-orbit the space station in 2013, but that was postponed because it was still in a good shape.

if you losers wish, send a space station into space like we just did, let it fall down to earth like tiangong after 5 years effective operation, even if Beijing was hit, i wouldn't complain.

You can see from this orbital diagram control was lost in 2013 right after the Shenzhou 10 mission.

We losers don't launch space junk, we actually build it so it won't break down two years later and rain uncontrolled death on the Earth.

Nothing comparable? Really?

Three years of Mars Orbiter Mission: Made to run only for six months, India's Mangalyaan still going strong.

@nimo_cn

Question: Why a space station with a lifespan of just 2 years???

Answer: That's because fake and poor quality Chinese stuff doesn't last more than that!

But I have to admit that you Chinese are one up on us where sending astronauts to space is concerned.

Any reasons were specified why data link failed???
