Luo Yuan: China's first aircraft carrier named the "Diaoyu Islands"

"The Chinese navy's first aircraft carrier can be named 'Diaoyu Islands', declaring that China's sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands.", retired Major General Luo Yuan says on 19 August in Beijing.

Luo is Deputy Secretary-General of China Society of Military Science and executive vice president of the China Council for the Promotion of strategic culture. Luo is seemed as the "HAWK" icon of PLA forces.

Luo expresses "‹"‹that opinion in the seminar of "Diaoyu Islands issue and Four areas of Cross-straits" held in 19th afternoon. The "Four areas of Cross-straits" usually means China mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kang and Macau.

Luo says that South Korea Navy named its largest combat vessels – an amphibious assault ship – as "Dokdo" and sent it visit other countries to declare Dokdo is Korean territory.

Luo says the Chinese navy's can do the same thing to name its first carrier as the "Diaoyu Islands", declaring that China's territorial sovereignty over the Diaoyu Islands.

The seminar of "Diaoyu Islands issue and Four areas of Cross-straits" was organized by "Global Times". 20 people including renowned experts, the Chinese "Diaoyu Islands Protection" activists, as well as of representatives of relevant departments from both sides of the four participated the meeting.

I feel to name a first carrier of the Nation should be :
1. Naming after a person who is known for his or her Military prowess
2. Named after something which means "dont mess with me"
3. Named to show "threat"

...... but this is useless and immature behaviour.

In fairness to China South Korea did it first Dokdo class amphibious assault ship - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

But this flagship naming exercise after contested territories is an ominous sign of greater trouble ahead for Asia. Practically all regions in Asia from N,S,E,W have some very troubling potential flashpoints. And with the growing economic, political and military power of our major countries, which BTW are entangled in some form of territorial dispute with each other, we might witness more disturbing confrontations ahead.

I thought they would name it after Admirals too, like Shi Lang as speculated by Janes.

This name sucks. There is no way I would like it if the Vikrant or Vikramaditya was called Daman or Andamans...

Koreans are always some kind of over sensitive on patriotism.
This boat will be renamed as LiaoNing, which is the name of the province where it was refixed. Future ACs' names will also be chosen among other provinces, directly governed cities, and SAR like HK, Macao, or even Taiwan.

1 for major warships the tradition of PLAN would do is to name them after some major chinese cities names.....for tranning ships they sometimes use peoples names like the zhenghe ship (but not politicians nor military leaders) so it could be shiliang if defined as a trainning AC but if its diaoyudao it will be pretty not traditional.....

2 to focus on diaoyudao at this point is not very wise.....taiwan should always be the priority for chinese military buildups.....if taiwan issue can be solved then a range of stuff will certainly be solved including diaoyudao which cant be the other way around therefore shiliang will be a better choice if not named after cities like lhasa or hong kong
